Fibrinolytic activity in cystic lesions of jaw bones.

The fibrinolytic activity in the tissues of cystic lesions of jaw bones was investigated by the semiquantitative method of Astrup. The specimens examined were ameloblastoma (9 cases), follicular cyst (8 cases) and radicular cyst (14 cases). High fibrinolytic activity was observed in ameloblastoma, while in radicular cyst the activity was variable. It is suggested that in radicular cyst inflammatory episodes play an important role in activating local fibrinolysis, while in ameloblastoma the tissue itself has a great capacity to induce locally activated plasmin.

Effects of early cyclophosphamide treatment on lymphoid organs and its immune response in ducks.

Cyclophosphamide treatment of newly hatched White Pekin ducks significantly reduced the weight of their lymphoid organs and almost completely eliminated the formation of bursal lymphoid follicles at one week of age. There after the thymus and spleen of these ducks completely recovered in weight at 7 weeks of age. The bursa, however, retained its light weight and morphological defects, such as the absence of lymphoid follicles. The specific antibody producing-capability to Salmonella pullorum was also eliminated. The total dosage of cyclophosphamide was smaller than that employed in chickens, which makes effective chemical bursectomy in ducks possible.

Effect of human serum plus streptokinase on spontaneous pulmonary metastases of Vx2 carcinomas transplanted in the maxillary sinus of the rabbit.

The effect of fibrinolysis induced by human serum plus streptokinase on the spontaneous pulmonary metastases of Vx2 carcinomas transplanted in the maxillary sinus of the rabbit was investigated. Human serum plus streptokinase could well induce fibrinolysis in the tumor-bearing rabbits. Induced fibrinolysis significantly promoted the spontaneous pulmonary metastases of Vx2 carcinomas.

Tooth extraction in a patient with Glanzmann's thrombasthenia.

A 14-year-old Japanese boy suffering from Glanzmann's thrombasthenia required extraction of two permanent teeth and one primary tooth. This report deals with the details of the procedure and discusses the effect of platelet transfusion and local management in tooth extraction of patients with this hemorrhagic diathesis.

Analysis of 102 lesions diagnosed as "palatal tumor" in a spot diagnosis.

The present report analyzes 102 pathologic conditions of the palate which had been diagnosed as "palatal tumor" in a spot diagnosis at Osaka University Dental Hospital over an 8-year period. Tumors of minor salivary glands were the most frequent (51 cases, 50%). Tumors of non-salivary gland origin numbered 22 cases (21.6%), and inflammatory and cystic lesions totalled 29 cases (28.4%). The specificity of the tumors and the tumorous lesions in the palate are discussed.
