[Mucinous metaplasia of fallopian tube mucous membrane as a cause of pseudomyxoma peritonei].

A woman aged 49 years was relaparotomized at the Gynaecological Department of the "Rudolf Virchow" Medical Centre of the Free University of Berlin, following diagnosis of metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma. Proliferative mucinous metaplasia of the Fallopian tube and consecutive peritoneal pseudomyxoma were established as clinical findings and were hypothetically attributed to mucinous metaplasia of the salpingofimbrial mucosa. Neither mucocele of the appendix nor ovarian tumour were found. This possible site origin has been rarely mentioned in any case report in the past.

Purine nucleoside triphosphates in Streptomyces hydrogenans. Influence of steroids on the relative nucleotide level.

Various steroids in the culture medium of Streptomyces hydrogenans cause a rapid decrease of the relative GTP content of the cells. The relative ATP level is significantly diminished in the presence of progesterone and testosterone acetate. The initial decrease of the relative GTP content is proportional to the growth inhibitory effect of the steroids tested. There is no relationship between steroid-dependent induction of the synthesis of 20 beta- and 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and the ability of the steroids to decrease the relative GTP content of the cells.

[Malignant epithelioma of the retinal pigment epithelium (author's transl)].

Description of clinical and histopathologic findings in a case of malignant epithelioma of the retinal pigment epithelium. This very rare neoplasm usually develops at the equator of the globe or more peripherally and is practically always mistaken for a malignant melanoma of the choroid. Metastasis of this tumor, revealing an infiltrative and destructive growth pattern, has not been described unequivocally.

Leiomyoma of the ciliary body.

Clinical, histological, and electron-microscopic study of a leiomyoma of the ciliary body, which was removed by cyclectomy from the right eye of a 55-year-old female patient. This is the second case in the literature in which an excision has been performed and the diagnosis been confirmed by electron microscopy. The differential diagnosis between amelanotic malignant melanoma, schwannoma, and neurofibroma is discussed, and the electron-microscopic characteristics of a leiomyoma are demonstrated.

Postnatal development of the cat's retina: a concept of maturation obtained by qualitative and quantitative examinations.

From a coherent morphological and morphometrical investigation of the postnatal development of the cat's retina, some main aspects are presented concerning the structures lying outside the outer limiting membrane, the neuropile layers and the nuclear layers. It is shown by means of qualitative and quantitative results, that the maturation process of the various cellular elements in the cat's retina can be devided into three phases and is presumably finished between the 4th to the 5th month of life.

Age Factors

Wilms' tumor and adrenocortical carcinoma with hemihypertrophy and hamartomas.

A girl with hemihypertrophy and hamartomas, now 14 years old, had Wilms' tumor and subsequently developed adrenocortical carcinoma. The occurrence of the two tumors with the signs of an inborn defect of growth control supports the hypothesis that both tumors can be caused by the same etiologic factors, which are also teratogenic. An alternative explanation of induction of the second tumor by previous radio- and chemotherapy is discussed. Possible relationships between our case and the syndrome of Wiedemann and Beckwith are pointed out.

Adolescent

[Carcinoembryonic antigen in retinoblastomas (author's transl)].

In 47 patients (46 children and 1 adult) with unilateral and bilateral retinoblastoma, the titer of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was determined. The CEA titer of children with active retinoblastomas was 1.44 +/- 0.26 ng/ml (x +/- SEM). Those patients whose retinoblastoma was inactivated by therapy did not show a significantly lower CEA titer. In the group of children with one eye removed because of a unilateral retinoblastoma, the CEA titer was significantly (P less than 0.1) lower. The globes of 25 children were examined histologically. In those cases with invasion of the optic nerve or choroid, the CEA titer was significantly higher (P less than 0.1) as compared with those where the tumor was limited to the retina alone.

[Lethal achondrogenesis: a review of 56 cases (author's transl)].

54 cases with lethal achondrogenesis from the literature as well as two own cases are reviewed and analyzed with regard to the following characteristics: sex, hydramnios, breech presentation, duration of pregnancy, length and weight at birth, head circumference, length of upper and lower extremities, clinical and radiological data, age of mother and father at time of birth, familial occurrence and consanguinity of parents, histological, histochemical and electronmicroscopic tissue examination.

[Treatment of band keratopathy with EDTA (author's transl)].

Six eyes with band keratopathy were treated with ethylenediamintetraacetacid (EDTA). The treatment is simple, shows no harmful complications and may replace corneal grafting. EDTA treatment can not be successful if a pannus or hyalin deposits impede contact between EDTA and the calcium deposition. Histopathologic examination suggests that the basement membrane of the corneal epithelium is the primary focus of cristallisation of the calcium salt. Even in long standing cases of band keratopathy only the most superficial layers of the cornea are involved.

Aged

[Focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver and oral contraceptives].

Three cases of benign liver tumors in young women are reported in addition to 58 cases in the literature. Uncharacteristic pains in the upper abdomen and general weakness were the main symptoms. The most valuable diagnostic examination is selective angiography. Liver resection was successful in these cases. Elective surgery is advocated because massive bleeding with high lethality may occur. Histologically focal nodular hyperplasia was found and all three had taken oral contraceptives.
