[Treatment of band keratopathy with EDTA (author's transl)].

Six eyes with band keratopathy were treated with ethylenediamintetraacetacid (EDTA). The treatment is simple, shows no harmful complications and may replace corneal grafting. EDTA treatment can not be successful if a pannus or hyalin deposits impede contact between EDTA and the calcium deposition. Histopathologic examination suggests that the basement membrane of the corneal epithelium is the primary focus of cristallisation of the calcium salt. Even in long standing cases of band keratopathy only the most superficial layers of the cornea are involved.

[Focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver and oral contraceptives].

Three cases of benign liver tumors in young women are reported in addition to 58 cases in the literature. Uncharacteristic pains in the upper abdomen and general weakness were the main symptoms. The most valuable diagnostic examination is selective angiography. Liver resection was successful in these cases. Elective surgery is advocated because massive bleeding with high lethality may occur. Histologically focal nodular hyperplasia was found and all three had taken oral contraceptives.

[Animal experimental studies of hemolysis following extracorporeal blood irradiation].

In experimental studies on animals, extracorporal blood irradiation was performed in 3 sheeps and 1 goat by means of 500 Ci 137 cesium source. The sheep died of the sequelae of narcosis, with anaemia being only moderately marked. In the goat a transit dosis of 466566 rad could be applied before the animal died of the sequelae of haemolytic anaemia.

Sickle-cell disease. A clinicopathologic case report.

Report of the clinical history and the histopathologic findings of the globe of a 38-year-old male patient from Ghana. The clinical picture of sickle-cell disease and Eales' disease is very similar, however, the race of the patient and hemoglobin electrophoresis leave no doubts as to the correct diagnosis.

[Hemolysis after extracorporeal blood irradiation of man?].

Haemolysis was studied before and after extracorporeal irradiation of the blood of 20 chronic lymphadenosis patients. Free haemoglobin, haptoglobin and haemopexin were not affected by irradiation, indicating that no haemolysis was caused by the transit dose accumulated during the applied procedure.
