On 67 cases of pancreas head region cancer with its definite diagnosis confirmed by laparotomy, studies were made of their ultrasonograms and of their urtrasonic tissue characterization obtained from the ultrasonography of the resected specimens immersed in water in 17 of 29 cases resected. The following results have been obtained. Ultrasonogram of pancreas head region cancer has the following characteristics. Direct findings: i) abnormal internal echo level of tumor images, ii) irregular images of tumor margin, iii) irregular internal echo of tumor images, iv) localized enlargement of the pancreas, v) altenuation or disappearance of back echo of tumor images. Indirect findings: i) dilated common bile duct ii) enlarged gallbladder, iii) dilated intrahepatic bile duct, iv) dilated pancreatic duct, v) abnormal deformation of vascular images surrounding the pancreas. Resected cases had less scanty ultrasonographic findings than non-resected cases. The detection of pancreas head region cancer by ultrasound was possible in 43 cases (64.2%). Differential diagnosis of pancreas head region cancer by ultrasound may be possible to a certain extent. Internal echo level of tumor images had a close relation with tissue-type, interstitial connective tissue hyperplasia and the cut surface structure of the resected specimens.

A new method is reported for preparing a thin planar membrane of 1,2-distearoylsn-glycero-3-phosphocholine and egg yolk lecithin-cholesterol (molar ratio of 1:1) between a pair of cellulose sheets. This technique, developed from the method of the multilayer planar membrane preparation (Setaka, M., et al. (1979) J. Biochem. 86, 355-362; 1619-1622; (1980) J. Biochem. 88, 1819-1829), consisted of three experimental processes. First, a phospholipid monolayer was prepared at an air-water interface, then taken up on a stretched cellulose sheet. A thin lipid membrane, supported from both sides by cellulose sheets, was constructed by combining two of these lipid monolayer-cellulose sheets. The permeability coefficient of the thin lipid membrane was estimated by removing the effect of two outer cellulose sheets, and this permeability was found to be larger than those of other model membranes of a lipid bilayer, indicating that the present lipid membrane is not a perfect single lipid bilayer. However, certain experimental evidence suggests that the bulk of the phospholipids formed a bilayer between the two cellulose sheets. Since this lipid membrane is particularily stable, larger membranes can be prepared by the present method than other planar bilayer membranes of lipid, which are usually constructed inside a pin hole in a thin teflon sheet.

Biological and immunological measurements of human luteinizing hormone (hLH) were performed with plasma samples obtained by continuous withdrawal over a 10-hour period in various phases of the normal menstrual cycle. A pulsatile pattern of hLH discharge was demonstrated by both the in vitro bioassay and radioimmunoassay throughout the menstrual cycle, although the frequency and the amplitude of the pulse differed according to the menstrual stage. The decreased half disappearance time of immunoreactive hLH (83.7 min with 95% confidence limits at 64.3 and 103.1 min), in comparison with that of bioactive hLH (122.9 (98.2: 147.6) min), and the rapid recovery of the depressed biological to immunological activity ratio (B/I ratio) at the peak of the pulse (0.87 (0.77:0.96) in the periovulatory phase indicated the concomitant discharge of hLH subunits with hLH. The differences in the half disappearance times of bioactive hLH in the follicular and luteal phases (103.6 (94.7:112.5) min and 87.2 (72.5: 101.9) min, respectively) and in the B/I ratios at the peaks of the pulses in these two phases (1.17 (1.05:1.30) and 1.03 (0.94:1.12), respectively) suggested the selective secretion of hLH subpopulations with various biological and immunological potencies and with various clearance rates. The significantly depressed B/I ratios at the trough in the luteal phase (0.58 (0.44:0.76) were sufficient to question the overall reliability of the hLH-RIA procedure employed, especially when applied to low hLH levels, even after several methodological improvements.
Plasma samples were obtained by repeated venopunctures immediately before, and at 15, 30, 60, 120 and 180 min after intravenous bolus administration of 100 micrograms synthetic LH-RH in normal and various anovulatory women. Plasma hLH levels were determined by an in vitro bioassay and a radioimmunoassay with improved reagents. The LH-RH stimulation induced an abrupt elevation of both biological and immunological hLH activities in normal and anovulatory women, although the responsiveness to LH-RH differed from case to case. Both elevated biological and immunological hLH activities decreased gradually with a half disappearance time of 122.4 +/- 27.9 min and 112.5 +/- 25.4 min, respectively (Mean +/- S.D.). A transient and significant depression in the ratio of biological to immunological hLH activities (B/I ratio) was observed at 15 min after the LH-RH administration in normal subjects. This depression is attributable to the cross-contamination of an increased amount of hLH subunits induced by LH-RH stimulation. The B/I ratios were significantly elevated throughout the investigation period in the anovulatory patients when compared with those in the normal subjects. This elevation appears to indicate the increased discharge of special type(s) of hLH subpopulations of high biological potency in the anovulatory cases.

A case of rectal carcinoid tumor in a 79-year-old Japanese man is reported. The tumor, 1.5 x 0.9 cm, was localized in both mucosa and submucosa of the rectum with neither invasion nor metastasis. Microscopically, neoplastic cells were mainly arranged in rosette-like and trabecular structures within thin fibrous stroma. Histochemically, both argyrophil and argentaffin reactions were positive. At the ultrastructural level, two distinctive types of neurosecretory granules were found in the cytoplasm of tumor cells.
In order to estimate age specific prevalence of Anti HA in Japan, 1757 serum samples from healthy subjects or patients with nonhepatic disease taken in 6 different districts of Japan were tested for Anti HA using HAVAB Kit. Very low prevalence, less than 10%, was observed in young adults or children. These facts indicate the young Japanese are quite susceptible to HAV infection and the effective preventive measures are urgently needed. Over all prevalence of Anti HA was 56.2%. Comparing the age specific prevalence of Anti HA in Japan with those in other countries, the situation in Japan was in intermediate between highly endemic South-East region and developed European countries.
The recent communication by Bishop and Gray (J. Biochem. 90, (1981)) on the streaming in the circular slit of stream cells is probably based on observations under conditions where no active streaming can be produced because of a substantial lack of F-actin. According to our experience, these conditions are similar to those obtained when actins are partly denaturated. Hence, for the sake of their criticism, detailed comparisons should be added of the stability of streaming, the distribution of streaming velocities as well as their sizes, acto-HMM ATPase activities under various streaming velocities and the amount of proteins fixed to the Millipore filter.
In order to improve the sensitivity and the reliability of the in vitro bioassay for human luteinizing hormone, various strains of male mice at various chronological ages were sacrificed to obtained dispersed testes interstitial cell preparations. They consisted of DDN, DDY, DBA, C57, C3H, ICR, and BAL/C at 5, 7 and 9 weeks of age. The C57 Black strain, especially at 7 and 9 weeks of age, gave the most satisfactory standard dilution curve with a sensitivity of less than 12.5 microIU/tube, with a wide assayable range and with a parallelism to the sample dilution curve. Improvement of the assay is expected with the use of the C57 Black strain as the source of the cell suspension.
