Reaction of a terminal phosphinidene complex with azulenes: eta1-complexes, C--H bond insertions, and 1,4-adducts.

Reaction of an in situ generated phosphinidene complex [PhPW(CO)(5)] with the aromatic azulene and guaiazulene leads to unexpected 1,4-adducts of the seven-membered ring and to C--H bond insertion of the five-membered ring. A DFT analysis suggests that the reaction is initiated by formation of a eta(1)-complex between the phosphinidene and the five-membered ring of the aromatic substrate. Four conformations of this complex were identified. Two convert without barrier to the slightly more stable syn- and anti-1,2-adducts. These undergo pericyclic 1,7-sigmatropic rearrangements with remarkably low barriers to give 1,4-adducts, with an inverted configuration at the phosphorus center. An X-ray crystal structure is presented for one of the 1,4-adducts of guaiazulene. The other two eta(1)-complexes insert with modest barriers into a C--H bond of the five-membered ring.

Synthesis and properties of para-substituted NCN-pincer palladium and platinum complexes.

A variety of para-substituted NCN-pincer palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes [MX(NCN-Z)] (M=Pd(II), Pt(II); X=Cl, Br, I; NCN-Z=[2,6-(CH(2)NMe(2))(2)C(6)H(2)-4-Z](-); Z=NO(2), COOH, SO(3)H, PO(OEt)(2), PO(OH)(OEt), PO(OH)(2), CH(2)OH, SMe, NH(2)) were synthesised by routes involving substitution reactions, either prior to or, notably, after metalation of the ligand. The solubility of the pincer complexes is dominated by the nature of the para substituent Z, which renders several complexes water-soluble. The influence of the para substituent on the electronic properties of the metal centre was studied by (195)Pt NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Both the (195)Pt chemical shift and the calculated natural population charge on platinum correlate linearly with the sigma(p) Hammett substituent constants, and thus the electronic properties of predesigned pincer complexes can be predicted. The sigma(p) value for the para-PtI group itself was determined to be -1.18 in methanol and -0.72 in water/methanol (1/1). Complexes substituted with protic functional groups (CH(2)OH, COOH) exist as dimers in the solid state due to intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions.

Branched phospha[7]triangulanes.

A highly strained, thermally stable (up to 150 degrees C) branched phospha[7]triangulane was synthesized from the second-generation bicyclopropylidene and transient phosphinidene [Ph-P=W(CO)5], followed by demetalation in refluxing xylene. Bulkier transient CuCl-alkene-complexed phosphinidene gave 2-phosphabicyclo-[3.2.0]hept-1(5)-ene as an additional product. The "outer sphere" spirocyclopropanes provide a stabilizing factor for both of these novel compounds.

Twinning by merohedry in cyclohexanone oxime: a revised structure.

The crystal structure of cyclohexanone oxime, C(6)H(11)NO, was reported as severely disordered in the trigonal non-centrosymmetric space group P3 [Olivato, Ribeiro, Zukerman-Schpector & Bombieri (2001). Acta Cryst. B57, 705-713]. Re-investigation of the crystal structure as twinned by merohedry in the trigonal centrosymmetric space group P-3, with a twofold rotation about [001] as twin law, resulted in a well ordered structure and low R values. The asymmetric unit contains three independent molecules, existing as a hydrogen-bonded trimer, having an R(3)(3)(9) graph set.

Synthesis and structure-activity relationships of conformationally constrained histamine H(3) receptor agonists.

Immepip, a conformationally constrained analogue of the histamine congener imbutamine, shows high affinity and functional activity on the human H(3) receptor. Using histamine and its homologues as prototypes, other rigid analogues containing either a piperidine or pyrrolidine ring in the side chain were synthesized and tested for their activities at the human H(3) receptor and the closely related H(4) receptor. In the series of piperidine containing analogues, immepip was found to be the most potent H(3) receptor agonist, whereas its propylene analogue 13a was identified as a high-affinity neutral antagonist for the human H(3) receptor. Moreover, replacement of the piperidine ring of immepip by a pyrrolidine ring led to a pair of enantiomers that show a distinct stereoselectivity at the human H(3) and H(4) receptor.

Electron delocalization in cross-conjugated p-phenylenevinylidene oligomers.

The synthesis, structure, and electronic properties of a series of cross-conjugated p-phenylenevinylidene oligomers with one to four double bonds are reported. The X-ray crystal structure of the compound with two double bonds reveals a nonplanar conformation with torsion angles about the C(phenylene)-C(vinylidene) and C(phenyl)-C(vinylidene) formal single bonds of 39.5(2) degrees and 30.5(2) degrees, respectively. Admixture of quinoid character in the ground state is observed. Infrared and Raman spectroscopy do not provide a clear picture of the degree of electron delocalization in the series, since the C=C stretching mode does not adequately reflect the C=C bond order and has a local nature. In contrast, electronic spectra and electrochemical data, as well as AM1 and PPP/SCF calculations, reveal that the cross-conjugated compounds basically behave as linearly pi-conjugated systems in the sense that molecular orbitals are delocalized over the entire structure and systematically change in energy. The electronic interaction between the repeating units is, however, not very strong, which has the consequence that spatial extension of the molecular orbitals does not lead to a red shift of the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) electronic transition. This is related to the feature that the modest narrowing of the HOMO-LUMO gap with the chain length is accompanied by a relatively large reduction of electron repulsion. This finding implies that care should be taken in the use of electronic spectra for the evaluation of conjugation phenomena.

N-Heterocyclic carbene functionalized iridium phosphinidene complex [Cp*(NHC)Ir=PMes*]: comparison of phosphinidene, imido, and carbene complexes.

The novel phosphinidene complex [Cp*(NHC)Ir=PMes*] (3; NHC=1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene) was prepared in high yield from [Cp*(NHC)IrCl(2)] (2) and [LiPHMes*].3 THF. It represents the first example of an NHC ligated transition metal phosphinidene complex. The X-ray crystal structure for 3 is also reported. DFT calculations on the N-heterocyclic carbene containing parent complexes [Cp(NHC)Ir=E] (E=PH, NH, CH(2)) show that the NHC ligand acts as good sigma-donor/weak pi-acceptor ligand and forms strong Ir-C(NHC) single bonds. The Ir=E double bonds result from strong triplet-triplet interactions between [Cp(NHC)Ir] and E.

Synthesis and reactions of terminal osmium and ruthenium complexed phosphinidenes [(eta6-Ar)(L)Md=PMes*].

Novel, very stable ruthenium and osmium containing terminal phosphinidene complexes [(eta(6)-Ar)(L)M=Mes*] (Ar=benzene, p-cymene; L=PR(3), CO, and RNC) have been prepared by dehydrohalogenation of novel [(eta(6)-Ar)MX(2)(PH(2)Mes*)] complexes in the presence of a stabilizing ligand. Xray crystal structures are reported for [(eta(6)-C(6)H(6))(PPh(3))Rud=PMes*] (9) and [(eta(6)-pCy)(PPh(3))Os=PMes*] (4). Dehydrohalogenation in the absence of a stabilizing ligand resulted in the new P-spiroannulated Ru(2)P(2)-ring structure 16. Dehydrohalogenation in the presence of but-2-yne gave a novel phosphaallyl complex [(eta(6)-Ar)Ru(eta(3)-R(2)PC(Me)CHMe)] 26, for which an X-ray crystal structure is reported. The mechanism by which 16 and 26 are obtained is presumed to involve the intermediate formation of the 16-electron (eta(6)-benzene)Rud=PMes* phosphinidene complex.

Alcoholysis of acylpalladium(II) complexes relevant to the alternating copolymerization of ethene and carbon monoxide and the alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes: the importance of Cis-coordinating phosphines.

The mechanism and kinetics of the solvolysis of complexes of the type [(L-L)Pd(C(O)CH(3))(S)](+)[CF(3)SO(3)](-) (L-L = diphosphine ligand, S = solvent, CO, or donor atom in the ligand backbone) was studied by NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy with the use of the ligands a-j: SPANphos (a), dtbpf (b), Xantphos (c), dippf (d), DPEphos (e), dtbpx (f), dppf (g), dppp (h), calix-6-diphosphite (j). Acetyl palladium complexes containing trans-coordinating ligands that resist cis coordination (SPANphos, dtbpf) showed no methanolysis. Trans complexes that can undergo isomerization to the cis analogue (Xantphos, dippf, DPEphos) showed methanolyis of the acyl group at a moderate rate. The reaction of [trans-(DPEphos)Pd(C(O)CH(3))](+)[CF(3)SO(3)](-) (2e) with methanol shows a large negative entropy of activation. Cis complexes underwent competing decarbonylation and methanolysis with the exception of 2j, [cis-(calix-diphosphite)Pd(C(O)CH(3))(CD(3)OD)](+)[CF(3)SO(3)](-). The calix-6-diphosphite complex showed a large positive entropy of activation. It is concluded that ester elimination from acylpalladium complexes with alcohols requires cis geometry of the acyl group and coordinating alcohol. The reductive elimination of methyl acetate is described as a migratory elimination or a 1,2-shift of the alkoxy group from palladium to the acyl carbon atom. Cis complexes with bulky ligands such as dtbpx undergo an extremely fast methanolysis. An increasing steric bulk of the ligand favors the formation of methyl propanoate relative to the insertion of ethene leading to formation of oligomers or polymers in the catalytic reaction of ethene, carbon monoxide, and methanol.

End-on and side-on peroxo derivatives of non-heme iron complexes with pentadentate ligands: models for putative intermediates in biological iron/dioxygen chemistry.

Mononuclear iron(III) species with end-on and side-on peroxide have been proposed or identified in the catalytic cycles of the antitumor drug bleomycin and a variety of enzymes, such as cytochrome P450 and Rieske dioxygenases. Only recently have biomimetic analogues of such reactive species been generated and characterized at low temperatures. We report the synthesis and characterization of a series of iron(II) complexes with pentadentate N5 ligands that react with H(2)O(2) to generate transient low-spin Fe(III)-OOH intermediates. These intermediates have low-spin iron(III) centers exhibiting hydroperoxo-to-iron(III) charge-transfer bands in the 500-600-nm region. Their resonance Raman frequencies, nu(O)(-)(O), near 800 cm(-)(1) are significantly lower than those observed for high-spin counterparts. The hydroperoxo-to-iron(III) charge-transfer transition blue-shifts and the nu(O)(-)(O) of the Fe-OOH unit decreases as the N5 ligand becomes more electron donating. Thus, increasing electron density at the low-spin Fe(III) center weakens the O-O bond, in accord with conclusions drawn from published DFT calculations. The parent [(N4Py)Fe(III)(eta(1)-OOH)](2+) (1a) ion in this series (N4Py = N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-bis(2-pyridyl)methylamine) can be converted to its conjugate base, which is demonstrated to be a high-spin iron(III) complex with a side-on peroxo ligand, [(N4Py)Fe(III)(eta(2)-O(2))](+) (1b). A detailed analysis of 1a and 1b by EPR and Mössbauer spectroscopy provides insights into their electronic properties. The orientation of the observed (57)Fe A-tensor of 1a can be explained with the frequently employed Griffith model provided the rhombic component of the ligand field, determined by the disposition of the hydroperoxo ligand, is 45 degrees rotated relative to the octahedral field. EXAFS studies of 1a and 1b reveal the first metrical details of the iron-peroxo units in this family of complexes: [(N4Py)Fe(III)(eta(1)-OOH)](2+) has an Fe-O bond of 1.76 A, while [(N4Py)Fe(III)(eta(2)-O(2))](+) has two Fe-O bonds of 1.93 A, values which are in very good agreement with results obtained from DFT calculations.

New isomeric azine-bridged dinuclear platinum(II) complexes circumvent cross-resistance to cisplatin.

Four new isomeric azine-bridged complexes ([(cis-Pt(NH(3))(2)Cl)(2)(mu-pzn)]Cl(2) (1a) (pzn = pyrazine) and its corresponding nitrate salt (1b), [(cis-Pt(NH(3))(2)Cl)(2)(mu-pmn)]Cl(2) (2) (pmn = pyrimidine), and [(cis-Pt(NH(3))(2)Cl)(2)(mu-pdn)](NO(3))(2) (3) (pdn = pyridazine) have been newly synthesized as potential anticancer compounds. These complexes have been characterized by (1)H and (195)Pt NMR spectroscopy, and also the X-ray crystal structure of 1b has been determined. The reactions of 1a, 2, and 3 with guanosine-5'-monophosphate (GMP) have been monitored and kinetically investigated in D(2)O solutions at 310 K using (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Both 1a and 2 react with 2 equiv of GMP to form 1:2 complexes. The reactions involve a stepwise direct substitution of chloride ligands by GMP, with similar reaction rates for both complexes. On the other hand, the reaction of 3 with GMP results in the cleavage of one of the Pt-N(pyridazine) bonds to form an N7,O6-platinated polymer. The reaction products have been separated and have been characterized by (1)H and (195)Pt NMR spectroscopy. A cytotoxicity assay of the azine-bridged complexes (1a, 1b, 2, and 3) has been performed on human tumor cell lines and two L1210 murine leukemia cell lines (one sensitive to and one resistant to cisplatin). In general, the complexes show lower cytotoxicity than cisplatin for the human tumor cell lines except for the IGROV cell line. Their cytotoxicity for the mouse cell lines is comparable to or higher than that of cisplatin. Furthermore, these complexes appeared to largely or partly overcome the cross-resistance to cisplatin. Implications of these findings are discussed in the context of a structure-activity relationship for this class of compounds.

Century-known copper salt Cu(OAc)(OMe) proven to be a unique magnetic lattice composed of tetranuclear copper(II) species with a rare binding mode of the acetate anion.

The structure, spectroscopy, and magnetism of a century-old copper salt, Cu(OAc)(OMe), is reported. The crystal structure contains two independent Cu(II) ions, which are both five-coordinated and which are bridged by methoxo and acetate anions to form an infinite 2D network. Thereby the methoxo groups connect Cu1 and Cu2 with their symmetry-generated counterparts Cu1(i) and Cu2(i), respectively, resulting in Cu.Cu distances of 2.9803(10) and 2.9874(10) A. Cu1 and Cu2 themselves are bridged via the carboxylate groups of two acetates leading to a Cu1.Cu2 distance of 2.9473(7) A. The tetranuclear units thus generated are cross-linked via acetate oxygens to form a 2D sheet structure. One of the two independent acetate ligands has a rare binding mode, whereby it acts as a tetradentate syn-anti, syn-anti bridging ligand. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility was assigned to be dominated by the very strong antiferromagnetic exchange coupling via bis(mu-methoxo) bridges (J(1) = -409(1) cm(-)(1)).

Injectable calcium phosphate bone cement Norian SRS for the treatment of intra-articular compression fractures of the distal radius in osteoporotic women.

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fracture often presents a metaphyseal void which is more extended in elderly, osteoporotic patients. Bone graft and bone substitutes are reported to be beneficial in maintaining metaphyseal reduction. METHODS: We performed a prospective study on 52 menopausal, osteoporotic women with unstable intra-articular distal radius fractures to compare the outcome of percutaneous pinning and immobilisation in a cast for 6 weeks with that using injectable calcium phosphate bone cement (Norian Skeletal Repair System, SRS) to supplement pin and screw fixation and immobilisation in a cast for 3 weeks. All patients were reviewed 2 years (range 21-29 months) after surgery. RESULTS: Patients treated with SRS had better functional outcome, restoration of movement and grip strength ( p<0.001). In this group there was 1 mm loss of radial length, 3 degrees loss of radial inclination and 7 degrees loss of palmar tilt. In the control group radial length decreased 3 mm, radial inclination decreased 11 degrees and palmar tilt 12 degrees. Loss of reduction was significantly higher in the control group ( p<0.001). CONCLUSION: We conclude that the use of Norian SRS to supplement pin and screw fixation is effective in maintaining the reduction of unstable intra-articular distal radius fractures in osteoporotic patients and provides a better clinical outcome than percutaneous pinning.

Dichlorobis(DL-proline-kappaO)zinc(II).

The title compound, [ZnCl(2)(C(5)H(9)NO(2))(2)], crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group C2/c with the Zn atom on a twofold axis. The two proline residues in any one complex thus have the same absolute configuration. Hydrogen bonding links the molecules into linear chains, which run in the crystallographic b direction. The proline residues within any one chain also have an identical absolute configuration.

[5-Benzyl-3-phenyl-2-(2-pyridyl-kappaN)thiazolidin-4-one-kappaS]dichloropalladium(II).

The palladium(II) centre in the title compound, [PdCl(2)(C(21)H(18)N(2)OS)], is coordinated to the pyridyl N atom and to the thiazolidinone S atom of the 5-benzyl-3-phenyl-2-(2-pyridyl)thiazolidin-4-one ligand, resulting in a five-membered chelate ring. Two cis-chloro ligands complete the square-planar coordination environment of the metal. Although the geometry at the Pd centre is essentially planar, the N-Pd-S bite angle of 85.20 (8) degrees causes deviations in the cis angles from the ideal value of 90 degrees. Opposite enantiomers form one-dimensional chains in the cell via a short S.O intermolecular interaction.
