Separation study of cadmium as CdI4(2-) through a bulk liquid membrane containing ketoconazole and oleic acid.

A chloroform membrane system containing a given mixture of ketoconazole and oleic acid was applied for the uphill transport of Cd2+ ions as CdI42-. In an HCl medium the ligand could form a stable ion-pair with CdI4(2-), which was readily extractable in the membrane phase. A weak basic solution (pH 8) was used as a suitable stripping medium for the quantitative transport of cadmium across the liquid membrane after 120 min. The selectivity and efficiency of Cd2+ transport from an aqueous solution containing other cations, such as Co2+, Cr3+, Ni2+, Fe2+, Mn2+, Pd2+ and Zn2+ ions, were investigated. It was found that none of these cations interfered with Cd2+ transport.

Trace analysis of methyl tert-butyl ether in water samples using headspace solvent microextraction and gas chromatography-flame ionization detection.

In this study, a simple, rapid and efficient method for the extraction and determination of MTBE in water samples by the headspace solvent microextraction (HSME) and gas chromatography at sub (microg/l) level is described. Some significant variables such as type of solvent, extraction time, salt concentration, sample and microdrop volumes, stirring rate, sample and microsyringe needle temperatures were optimized. Using optimum extraction conditions (benzyl alcohol as extracting solvent, 4 M NaCl, sample temperature 35 degrees C, sample volume 6 ml, stirring rate 1000 rpm, microsyring needle temperature -6 degrees C, extraction time 7.5 min and micro drop volume of 2 microl) a detection limit of 0.06 microg/l and a good linearity (R2 > 0.999) in a calibration range of 0.1-500 microg/l were achieved. This HSME method was applied to the analysis of MTBE in tap, well and spring waters and a groundwater sample contaminated by leaking gasoline from an underground storage tank (LUST) in a gasoline service station.

Hydroxy-thioxanthones as suitable neutral ionophores for the preparation of PVC-membrane potentiometric sensors for Al(III) ion.

The complexation of five recently synthesized hydroxy-thioxanthone derivatives with Al3+ ion was studied in a methanol solution spectrophotometrically, and the stepwise formation constants of the resulting 1:1 and 2:1 (ligand-to-metal) complexes were evaluated. The suitability of the thioxanthone derivatives as neutral ionophores for the preparation of a new Al3+ ion-selective PVC-membrane electrode was investigated, and 1-hydroxy-3-methyl-thiocanthone was selected as the best compound for this purpose. The prepared electrode exhibits a Nernstian response for Al3+ ions over a wide concentration range (2.0 x 10(-2) to 2.0 x 10(-6) M), with a limit of detection of 1.0 x 10(-6) M. It has a very fast response time of about 5 s and can be used for at least 3 months without any considerable divergence in the potentials. The proposed membrane sensor revealed very good selectivities for Al3+ over a wide variety of other metal ions, and could be used at a working pH range of 3.4 - 5.0. It was used as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titration of aluminum ions with EDTA, and in the determination of Al3+ in different real samples.

[Tetrakis(4-N,N-dimethylaminobenzene)porphyrinato]manganese(III) acetate as a novel carrier for a selective iodide PVC membrane electrode.

[5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(4-N,N-dimethylaminobenzene)porphyrinato]Mn(III) acetate (MnTDPAc) was applied as an ionophore for an iodide-selective PVC membrane electrode. The influences of the membrane composition, pH of the test solution and foreign ions on the electrode performance were investigated. The sensor exhibited not only excellent selectivity to iodide ion compared to Cl- and lipophilic anions such as ClO4- and salicylate, but also a Nernstian response with a slope of -59.4 +/- 1.2 mV per decade for iodide ions over a wide concentration range from 1.0 x 10(-2) to 7.5 x 10(-6) M at 25 degrees C. The potentiometric response was independent of the pH of the solution in the pH range of 2 - 8. The electrode could be used for at least 2 months without any considerable divergence in the potential. Good selectivity for iodide ion, a very short response time, simple preparation and relatively long-term stability were the silent characteristics of this electrode. It was successfully used as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of iodide ions, and also in the determination of iodide from seawater samples and drug formulations.

A selective 19F nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic method for the assay of the neuroleptic drug cis(Z)-flupentixol in human serum.

This investigation was carried out to evaluate 19F nuclear magnetic resonance as an analytical tool for the measurement of the cis(Z) and trans(E) stereoisomers of the antipsychotic drug flupentixol in human serum. The method is based on the integration of appropriate signals of both analytes and an internal standard. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of real samples without any interference, manipulation of large samples, and lengthy instrument time. Experimental parameters were selected to optimize accuracy, precision, and analysis time. The calibration curves in human serum matrix were linear for cis(Z)- and trans(E)-flupentixol over the ranges 4.0-50.0 and 2.6-25.0 microg/mL, respectively, with respective minimum detectable limits (S/N=3) of 1.67 and 1.72 microg/mL. The method was validated through spike and recovery for the two isomers of flupentixol from a human serum matrix.

PVC membrane and coated graphite potentiometric sensors based on Et4todit for selective determination of samarium(III).

Solution studies on the binding properties of 4,5,6,7-tetrathiocino[1,2-b:3,4-b']diimidazolyl-1,3,8,10-tetraethyl-2,9-dithione (Et(4)todit) toward a number of cationic species including some lanthanide ions revealed the occurrence of a selective 1:1 complexation of the ligand with Sm(3+) ion. Consequently, Et(4)todit was used as a suitable neutral ionophore for the preparation of novel polymeric membrane (PME) and coated graphite (CGE) Sm(3+)-selective electrodes. The electrodes exhibit a Nernstian behavior for Sm(3+) ions over wide concentration ranges (1.0 x 10(-5)-1.0 x 10(-1) M for PME and 1.0 x 10(-7)-1.0 x 10(-1) M for CGE) and very low limits of detection (8.0 x 10(-6) M for PME and 1.6 x 10(-8) M for CGE). The proposed potentiometric sensors manifest advantages of relatively fast response, and, most importantly, good selectivities relative to wide variety of other cations, including other lanthanide ions. The selectivity behavior of the proposed Sm(3+)-selective electrodes revealed a great improvement compared to the best previously reported electrode for samarium(III) ion. The potentiometric responses of the electrodes are independent of the pH of the test solution in the pH range 4.0-6.5. The electrodes were successfully applied to the recovery of Sm(3+) ion from tap water samples and also, as an indicator electrode, in potentiometric titration of samarium(III) ions.

A study of the photo-degradation kinetics of nifedipine by multivariate curve resolution analysis.

A multivariate curve resolution method based on the combination of Kubista approach and iterative target transformation method of Gemperline has been proposed. This method is a soft model and need no information about the spectrum of the product and mechanism of the reaction. The method was used to study the degradation kinetics of nifedipin, 1,4-dihydro-2,6-dimethyl-4-(2-nitrophenyl)-3,5-pyridine dicarboxilic acid dimethyl ester, upon exposure to the light of a 40 W tungsten lamp. The spectra of the nifedipine, collected at different lighting times, were subjected to the factor analysis and two chemical components were detected in the reaction system. Pure spectra of the components involved and their concentration profiles were obtained. The results revealed that the photodecomposition kinetics of nifedipine is zero-order at the beginning of the reaction. However, when the reaction preceded more than 50%, the kinetics of reaction changed to a first-order manner. The rate constants for the zero-order and first order regions were estimated as regions (4.96+/-0.13) x 10(-9) M(-1) s(-1) and (6.22+/-0.10) x 10(-5) s(-1), respectively.

Simultaneous determination of theophylline and caffeine by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy using partial least squares regression techniques.

A 1H-NMR procedure based on an analysis of its data by a multivariate calibration method was conducted for the simultaneous determination of theophylline and caffeine in synthetic and real samples. Partial least squares regression (PLS) was chosen as the calibration method. The methyl signals of theophilline at 3.36 and 3.54 ppm that overlapped with those of caffeine were significant characteristics which were employed in this study for their analyses. The proposed method was successfully applied to recovery studies of theophylline and caffeine from real tablet samples.

Novel membrane potentiometric sulfate ion sensor based on zinc-phthalocyanine for the quick determination of trace amounts of sulfate.

Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) based membranes of zinc-phthalocyanine (ZPC) with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB) as a cation excluder, and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and benzyl acetate (BA) as plasticizing solvent mediators were prepared and investigated as a SO4(2-) selective electrode. The best performance was observed with a membrane having a composition of ZPC-PVC-HTAB-BA in a ratio of 5%:32%:3%:60%, which works well over a wide concentration range (1.0 x 10(-2) - 1.0 x 10(-6) M) with a Nemstian slope of -29.2 mV per decade of activity, between the pH values of 2.0 to 7.0. This sensor shows a very fast response time of 10 s, and can be used over a period of 2 months with good reproducibility. The proposed sensor displays excellent selectivity for SO4(2-) over a large number of common inorganic anions. The sensor has been successfully applied for the direct and indirect determination of sulfate and zinc in zinc sulfate tablets, respectively. It was also used as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of sulfate ions with barium ions.

Fluorometric chemosensors. Interaction of toxic heavy metal ions Pb(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) with novel mixed-donor phenanthroline-containing macrocycles: spectrofluorometric, conductometric, and crystallographic studies.

The macrocycles L(1)-L(3) incorporating N(2)S(3)-, N(2)S(2)O-, and N(2)S(2)-donor sets, respectively, and containing the 1,10-phenanthroline unit interact in acetonitrile solution with heavy metal ions such as Pb(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) to give 1:1 ML, 1:2 ML(2), and 2:1 M(2)L complex species, which specifically modulate the photochemical properties of the ligands. The stoichiometry of the complex species formed during spectrofluorometric titrations and their formation constants in MeCN at 25 degrees C were determined from fluorescence vs M(II)/L molar ratio data. The complexes [Pb(L(1))][ClO(4)](2).(1)/(2)H(2)O (1), [Pb(L(2))][ClO(4)](2).MeNO(2) (1a), [Pb(L(3))(2)][ClO(4)](2).2MeCN (1b), and [Cd(L(3))][NO(3)](2) (2b) were also characterized by X-ray diffraction studies. The conformation adopted by L(1)-L(3) in these species reveals the aliphatic portion of the rings folded over the plane containing the heteroaromatic moiety with the ligands trying to encapsulate the metal center within their cavity. In 1, 1a, and 2b the metal ion completes the coordination sphere by interacting with counteranion units and solvent molecules. On the contrary, the 1:2 complex 1b shows Pb(II) sandwiched between two symmetry-related molecules of L(3) reaching an overall [4N + 4S] eight-coordination.

Monitoring of ampicillin and its related substances by NMR.

A 1H NMR procedure for the monitoring of ampicillin (Amp) and its main related substance in different media, has been developed. The characteristics peak of Amp, 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA), phenylglycine (PhG), and penicilloic acid in the range of 0.5-0.9 and 3.0-4.5 ppm were used for their identification in drugs and serum samples. The quantitative works were performed based on the intensity of protons of the methyl group link to the beta-lactam cyclic of Amp and 6-APA and the aromatic protons of PhG relative to the protons of methylene group of maleic acid, as internal standard, at constant temperature. The resulting data are compared with those obtained with an HPLC method proposed by British Pharmacopoeia. Statistical studies show that, at a confidence limit of %95, there is no significant difference between the two methods. In comparison with the HPLC method, the proposed NMR method does not require any sample pretreatment, standard solution preparation, long analysis time and use of any carcinogenic solvent. The method was applied to the determination of Amp and its related substances in synthetic mixtures, drug powders and serum samples.

Lanthanum(IlI) PVC membrane electrodes based on 1,3,5-trithiacyclohexane.

Novel plasticized polymeric membrane (PPME) and membrane-coated graphite (MCGE) electrodes based on 1,3,5-trithiacyclohexane for highly selective determination of La3+ ion have been developed. The electrodes exhibit Nernstian responses over very wide concentration ranges (8.0 x 10(-6)-5.0 x 10(-2) M for PPME and 4.0 x 10(-8)-1.0 x 10(-2) M for MCGE). The limit of detections were 5.0 x 10(-6) and 2.0 x 10(-8) M for PPME and MCGE, respectively. The electrodes possess a fast response time of approximately 10 s and can be used for at least 6 months without observing any deviation. The proposed electrodes revealed excellent selectivities for La3+ over a wide variety of alkali, alkaline earth, transition, and heavy metal ions and could be used in a pH range of 5.0-8.0. The practical utility of the electrodes has been demonstrated by their use as indicator electrodes in the potentiometric titration of La3+ ions with EDTA and in determination of F- in some mouthwash preparations.

A novel crown ether generation containing different heteroaromatic cations: synthesis, characterization, solid-phase (13)C NMR, X-ray crystal structure, and selective amino acid recognition.

The synthesis and structural characterization of a novel generation of crown ethers, 3, 5 and 6 containing pyrilium, thiopyrilium, and pyridinium subunits, respectively, are reported. The crown ether unit is potentially capable of forming host-guest complexes with inorganic and organic cations, while the heteroaromatic cationic unit is suitable to bind with anions. A variety of physicochemical methods including electrospray mass spectrometry, UV-vis spectroscopy, solution and solid-phase NMR, and X-ray crystallography were applied for structural characterization of the new crown ether derivatives. The (1)H and (13)C NMR studies indicate rapid rotation of the B9C3 unit about the C-C bond that connects the two units to each other. Single crystals for 3, 4, and 5 were successfully obtained, and their X-ray crystal structures were resolved. The perchlorate anion in 3 (orthorhombic, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1)) and 5 (orthorhombic, space group P2(1)) is far from O(+) and close to S(+). The solid-phase structure of 3 and 5 show small deviation from planarity for the four aromatic rings, whereas two of the aromatic rings in 4 are out of heteroaromatic ring. Spectrophotometric studies in methanol solution revealed that the ligand 3 can be successfully applied to selective amino acid recognition.

Quantitative structure-activity relationship study of recently synthesized 1,4-dihydropyridine calcium channel antagonists. Application of the Hansch analysis method.

The Hansch analysis method was applied to a series of recently synthesized nifedipine analogues containing nitroimidazolyl, phenylimidazolyl, and methylsulphonylimidazolyl groups at the C-4 position and different ester substituents at C-3 and C-5 positions of the dihydropyridine ring. Hydrophobic, electronic, inductive, and resonance substituent constants were used. The effect of these parameters on the biological activity of 1,4-dihydropyridines (calcium channel antagonist activity in Guinea-pig ileal cells, log (1/IC50)) was determined by multiple linear regression analysis. Linear and quadratic relationships were obtained between the activity and these parameters. It was found that both electronic and hydrophobic interactions occur between the nifedipine analogues and the receptor.
