Design of a new dodecyl sulfate-selective electrode based on conductive polyaniline.

A new, simple, sensitive, low cost and rapid potentiometric method for direct determination of ultra trace amounts of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) with a new DS(-)-selective electrode is reported. The electrode was prepared by electropolymerization of aniline in acidified DS- ion on the surface of a Pt electrode. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used for electropolymerization of polyaniline (PA) in the potential range of -200 to +1000 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. This sensor showed a Nernstian behavior (59.0 +/- 2.3 mV/decade) over a very wide linear range (1.0 x 10(-9)-3.0 x 10(-6) M) with a detection limit of 1.0 x 10(-9) M. The response time of the electrode was 15 s for 1.0 x 10(-7) M of analyte; the electrode can be used for 4 weeks without any major deviation. This electrode can be used in the pH range of 3.5-9.8. The selectivity of electrode to DS- over some organic, inorganic and anionic surfactants was investigated with the fixed primary ion method. The results show that the electrode is highly selective to DS- ion over other ions. The proposed electrode was applied to the determination of DS- in real samples.

Highly selective iodide membrane electrode based on a cerium salen.

A highly selective PVC membrane electrode based on a cerium-salen complex was prepared. The sensor displays an anti-Hofmeister selectivity sequence with a preference for iodide ion over many common organic and inorganic anions. The proposed electrode exhibits a near-Nernstian behavior over a wide concentration range (5.0 x 10(-2) - 8.0 x 10(-6) M) with a slope of 57.5 mV per decade, and a detection limit of 6.0 x 10(-6) M. The electrode has a very fast response time and can be used in the pH range of 3.0 - 1 1.0. It was applied, as an indicator electrode, in potentiometric titration of Ag+ ions.

A 9,10-anthraquinone derivative having two propenyl arms as a neutral ionophore for highly selective and sensitive membrane sensors for copper(II) ion.

New polymeric membrane (PME) and coated graphite (CGE) copper(II)-selective electrodes based on 1-hydroxy-2-(prop-2'-enyl)-4-(prop-2'-enyloxy)-9,10-anthraquinone were prepared. The electrodes reveal linear emf-pCu2+ responses over wide concentration ranges (1.0 x 10(-5)-1.0 x 10(-1) M with a slope of 27.3 mV decade-1 for PME and 8.0 x 10(-8)-5.0 x 10(-2) M with a slope of 29.1 mV decade-1 for CGE) and very low limits of detection (8.0 x 10(-6) M for PME and 5.0 x 10(-8) M for CGE). The potentiometric response is independent of the pH of the test solution in the pH range 3.0-6.0. The proposed electrodes possess very good selectivities over a wide variety of other cations, including alkali, alkaline earth, transition and heavy metal ions, the selectivity coefficients for the CGE being much improved over those for the PME. The electrodes were used as indicator electrodes in the potentiometric titration of Cu2+ and in the recovery of copper ions from wastewater.

Determination of SCN- in urine and saliva of smokers and non-smokers by SCN(-)-selective polymeric membrane containing a nickel(II)-azamacrocycle complex coated on a graphite electrode.

The construction, performance characteristics, and application of a novel polymeric membrane coated on a graphite electrode with unique selectivity towards SCN- are reported. The electrode was prepared by incorporating Ni(II)-2,2,4,9,9,11-hexamethyltetraazacyclotetradecanediene perchlorate into a plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) membrane. The influences of membrane composition, pH and foreign ions were investigated. The electrode displays a near Nernstian slope (-57.8 mV decade-1) over a wide concentration range of 1 x 10(-7)-1 x 10(-1) M of SCN- ion. The electrode has a detection limit of 4.8 x 10(-8) M (2.8 ng/cm3) SCN- and shows response times of about 15 s and 120 s for low to high and high to low concentration sequences, respectively. The proposed sensor shows high selectivity towards SCN- over several common organic and inorganic anions. The electrode revealed a great enhancement in selectivity coefficients and detection limit for SCN-, in comparison with the previously reported electrodes. It was successfully applied to the direct determination of SCN- in milk and biological samples, and as an indicator electrode in titration of Ag+ ions with thiocyanate.

Simultaneous determination of phenol and mononitrophenol isomers using PLS regression and conventional and derivative spectrophotometry.

The partial least squares regression method (PLS) was tested as a calibration procedure for the simultaneous determination of phenol, o-nitrophenol, m-nitrophenol and p-nitrophenol by both conventional and first derivative UV/Vis spectrophotometry. The experiments were conducted in the acidic, neutral and basic media. The results obtained by the application of the PLS procedure on the conventional and first derivative spectra in two solvent media were compared. It was found that the results obtained in the basic medium have better performance characteristics than those obtained in the acidic or neutral media. Comparable results were obtained in the case of both conventional and first derivative absorbance data. The proposed method was applied to the determination of the four phenol derivatives in natural spiked water samples at concentration levels between 1.0 and 10.0 microg ml(-1) with average recoveries in the range 96% - 99%.

Effects of some trivalent metal ions on the fluoride-induced chemiluminescence from a phenylphosphate-substituted dioxetane Lumigen PPD.

The chemiluminescence generated from the reaction of a thermally stable phenylphosphate-substituted dioxetane Lumigen PPD at ambient temperature was studied in DMSO solution. The presence of trivalent metal ions Cr(3+), Ga(3+), Fe(3+) and Al(3+) was found to quench the resulting chemiluminescence dramatically. The system resulted in nice Stern-Volmer plots in the quencher concentration range 1.5 x 10(-4)-1.8 x 10(-3) mol/L. The K(Q) values decreased in the order Cr(3+) > Ga(3+) > Fe(3+) > Al(3+).

Genetic algorithm applied to the selection of factors in principal component-artificial neural networks: application to QSAR study of calcium channel antagonist activity of 1,4-dihydropyridines (nifedipine analogous).

A QSAR algorithm, principal component-genetic algorithm-artificial neural network (PC-GA-ANN), has been applied to a set of newly synthesized calcium channel blockers, which are of special interest because of their role in cardiac diseases. A data set of 124 1,4-dihydropyridines bearing different ester substituents at the C-3 and C-5 positions of the dihydropyridine ring and nitroimidazolyl, phenylimidazolyl, and methylsulfonylimidazolyl groups at the C-4 position with known Ca(2+) channel binding affinities was employed in this study. Ten different sets of descriptors (837 descriptors) were calculated for each molecule. The principal component analysis was used to compress the descriptor groups into principal components. The most significant descriptors of each set were selected and used as input for the ANN. The genetic algorithm (GA) was used for the selection of the best set of extracted principal components. A feed forward artificial neural network with a back-propagation of error algorithm was used to process the nonlinear relationship between the selected principal components and biological activity of the dihydropyridines. A comparison between PC-GA-ANN and routine PC-ANN shows that the first model yields better prediction ability.

Simultaneous determination of promethazine, chlorpromazine, and perphenazine by multivariate calibration methods and derivative spectrophotometry.

Partial least-squares (PLS) regression, singular value decomposition-based PLS, and an artificial neural network (ANN) were tested as calibration procedures for the simultaneous determination of promethazine, chlorpromazine, and perphenazine by both conventional and derivative spectrophotometry. Comparison of the results revealed that the application of the ANN to the derivative spectra is superior to the application of the 2 PLS methods used. Different binary and ternary synthetic mixtures of the phenothiazine drugs in pure form and in tablets were analyzed by the proposed method, and acceptable results were obtained.

Selective determination of trace copper(II) by cathodic adsorptive stripping voltammetry with a naphthol-derivative Schiff's base.

A selective and sensitive stripping voltammetric method for the determination of trace amounts of copper(II) with a recently synthesized naphthol-derivative Schiff's base (2,2'-[1,2-ethanediylbis(nitriloethylidyne)]bis(1-naphthalene)) is presented. The method is based on adsorptive accumulation of the resulting copper-Schiff's base complex on a hanging mercury drop electrode, followed by the stripping voltammetric measurement at the reduction current of adsorbed complex at -0.15 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The optimal conditions for the stripping analysis of copper include pH 5.5 to 6.5, 8 microM Schiff's base and an accumulation potential of -0.05 V (vs. Ag/AgCI). The peak current is linearly proportional to the copper concentration over a range 2.3-50.8 ng ml(-1) with a limit of detection of 1.9 ng ml(-1). The accumulation time and RSD are 90 s and (3.2-3.5)%, respectively. The method was applied to the determination of copper in some analytical grade salts, tap water, human serum and sheep's liver.

Sulfate-selective PVC membrane electrode based on a strontium Schiff's base complex.

A strontium Schiff's base complex (SS) can be used as a suitable ionophore to prepare a sulfate-selective PVC-based membrane electrode. The use of oleic acid (OA) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB), as additives, and nitrobenzen (NB), dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and benzyl acetate (BA) as solvent mediators, were investigated. The best performance was observed with a membrane composition PVC: NB: SS: HTAB of 30%: 62%: 5%: 3% ratio. The resulting sensor works well over a wide concentration range (1.0 x 10(-2)-1.0 x 10(-6) M) with a Nernstian slope of -29.2 mV per decade of sulfate activity over a pH range 4.0-7.0. The limit of detection of the electrode is 5 x 10(-7) M. The proposed sensor shows excellent discriminating ability toward SO4(2-) ions with regard to many anions. It has a fast response time of about 15 s. The membrane electrode was used to the determination of zinc in zinc sulfate tablets. The sensor was also used as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of SO4(2-) against barium ion.
