[Morphological and cytophotometric characteristics of esophageal dysplasias and cancer in situ].

Studies on some morphological features of the squamous epithelium of esophageal mucosa in dysplastic processes and cancer in situ as well as quantitative studies of the DNA content have shown that changes in the DNA content, increased polyploidy and genetic heterogenicity of the cell elements correspond to the degree of epithelial cells dedifferentiation and might be taken into account in diagnosis of early malignification of esophageal squamous epithelium.

[Various cellular immunity indices in patients with esophageal cancer].

It was found that 75.8% of patients with esophageal cancer respond positively to percutaneous injection of the antigen polysaccharid fraction. In patients with esophagitis the positive reaction was noted in 25% of cases. The rosette-forming capacity of lymphocytes is suppressed in 91.2% of patients with esophageal cancer. Chemoradiation treatment results in greater depression of the organism responsiveness than chemotherapy.

[Morphology of reserve cells of the excretory ducts of esophageal mucous glands in chronic esophagitis].

Morphological, cytophotometrical, and histochemical study of reserve cells of the excretory ducts of esophageal mucous glands in chronic esophagitis was done on autopsy material (189 cases). Chronic esophagites were found to be accompaned by diverse morphological changes of reserve cells manifested in the development of their focal and diffuse hyperplasia. The reserve cells of the esophageal epithelium were found to be capable to differentiate into the squamous and glandular epithelium. Chronic esophagites were shown to cause metabolic disorders in the nuclei of the reserve cells leading to changes in the chromosome set. In the opinion of the authors, their results are important for the elucidation of the nature of esophageal adenoacanthomas.

[Cytological method in the diagnosis of esophageal cancer].

A correlation between the results, obtained in esophagofibroscopy, histological and cytological methods in establishing the diagnosis of esophageal cancer in 981 patients, has demonstrated that cytological method is a highly reliable one. The possibility to determine histological forms of esophageal tumor by means of cytological assay is shown.

[Comparative morphological characteristics of adenoacanthoma of different localization].

A morphological analysis of 40 observations on adeno-acanthomas of different localizations (oesophagus, uterus, larynx, pharynx) is presented. It was established that adeno-acanthoma, which is characterized by two-component composition, distinguished itself by certain variability of the structure. The plano-epithelial component present in the tumour of the glandular structures may be of a different degree of maturation, may have the structure of planocellular cancer, or may have no signs of atypia. Basing on their own findings and data reported in the literature the authors come to the conclusion that adeno-acanthomas depending on their structures should be referred to differently: adeno-acanthoma and adenosquamous cancer. It is possible that morphological differences in the histological structure of adeno-acanthoma are of significance in the clinical course of the disease.

[Esthesioblastoma of the nose].

Morphological investigations of biopsy materials in 8 cases of esthesioblastomas of the nasal cavity were carried out. The three morphological variants of the tumour are described: esthesioneuroepithelioma, esthesioneurocytoma, and esthesioneuroblastoma. Rare occurrence of esthesioblastomas, peculiar features of their histological structure and difficulties of diagnosis in histological verification are emphasized. Lymphosarcoma is recommended to be differentiated from nondifferentiated cancer and sympathoblastoma. An important differentially-diagnostic procedure is considered to be a positive reaction to argentation (for identifying neurofibrils).
