[Angiogenin: involvement in angiogenesis and tumour growth].

Angiogenin is one of the most potent inducers of neovascularization in experimental models in vivo. Angiogenin is normally present in plasma but overexpressed in cancer patients. The possible involvement of angiogenin in the development of cancer is suggested by its overexpression in patients with a variety of tumours and the observation that angiogenin antagonists prevent the growth of human tumour xenografts in athymic mice. This 14.1-kDa protein has 35% amino acid sequence identity with human pancreatic ribonuclease and displays ribonucleolytic activity. As only angiogenin is able to induce angiogenesis, its biological activities are thought to result from structural characteristics. Although the structural characteristics of angiogenin have been extensively studied, the understanding of its physiological role and of how its properties are expressed is still to be deciphered. This article reviews some of the biological, biochemical and structural properties of angiogenin.

[Aspiration of foreign bodies in the bronchi in children].

Records on 28 children (19 boys and 9 girls), mean age 3.1 years (range 6 months to 11 years), treated for foreign body aspiration (FBA) at the Department of Pediatrics, Split Clinical Hospital, during the 1992-1997 period, were analyzed. The mean hospital stay was 12.3 days (range 1 h to 92 days). History data on tracheobronchial FBA were available in 23 (82%) children. Radiologic findings pointed to FBA in 22 (77%) children. Rigid tracheobronchoscopy was performed in all patients, and proved successful in 26 (93%) of children. Digestible foreign bodies and food particles were removed in 22 (78%) children. Right-sided and left-sided bronchial FBA was recorded in 14 (50%) and 13 (46%) patients, respectively, whereas bilateral obstruction was present in one patient. The importance of suspected FBA in children with pronounced symptoms of coughing, dyspnea and choke is emphasized. Rigid tracheobronchoscopy and foreign body removal by forceps under anesthesia is an efficient and safe method, and we recommend its wider use in clinical practice.

Human prothymosin alpha inhibits division of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells, while its mutant lacking nuclear localization signal does not.

Effect of human prothymosin alpha and its mutant over-produced in S. cerevisiae on yeast cell division was studied. Wild-type prothymosin alpha appeared to block division of yeast cells. Its inhibitory action could be abolished by deletion of the last nine carboxy-terminal amino acids of prothymosin alpha containing nuclear localization signal, thus pointing to the nucleus as a compartment, where prothymosin alpha performs its action.

[Histogenesis of leukemic changes in cows].

A histopathologic study was carried out on lymph nodes and viscera of 98 cows and 28 heifers that responded positively in serologic examinations for leukosis. The animals did not exhibit clinical and paraclinical symptoms, neither were there found any morphologic changes characteristic of leukosis. There existed activation and proliferation of the reticuloendothelial tissue in the sinuses of the lymph nodes. The same response was shown by the endothelium of the capillaries in visceral organs. There was also metaplasia that concerned mainly the connective tissue cells of the lymph node trabeculas as well as the adventitial cells of the vascular walls. It was considered that the infection could be manifested morphologically as a reticuloendotheliosis. By its clinical course and morphologic manifestation bovine leukosis resembles some other virus diseases that have been systematized as "delayed virus infections'.

[Respiratory diseases in sheep due to Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae].

Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae was isolated from sheep and lambs affected with a respiratory disease. It was established that the pneumonic disease caused by this organism was a severe one, with high mortality rate in young lambs. Adult sheep and older lambs remained chronically affected. Susceptibility varied, depending on the breed of the animals, some imported animals running a more severe course of the disease than the local ones. The disease was artificially induced in lambs at the joint infection with M. ovipneumoniae and P. haemolytica. The morphologic changes in the lungs consisted in a prevailing proliferation of the septal cells and polynuclear cells in the alveoli, an interseptal histiocyte proliferation, and a serous leukocyte infiltration.

[Streptococcal infection in newborn lambs].

A disease was observed in newborn lambs with a high mortality rate. Streptococcus zooepidemicus was isolated from dead lambs. The disease was reproduced through the intratracheal infection of lambs with a culture of the isolated organism. The picture of septicaemia was observed, strong symptoms of the disease being noticed with the involvement of the respiratory system. The morphologic changes were mainly seen within the region of the lungs, pleura, and pericardium. Histologically, there were lesions characteristic of an acute septic process. It was concluded that Streptococcus zooepidemicus was highly pathogenic for young lambs.

[Influenza epizootic in swine due to strain A (Victoria/3/75 H3N2)].

Studies were carried out on the first grippe epizootic in pigs in Bulgaria. The affected animals showed a rise in temperature (40.5 to 41.8 degrees C), loss of appetite, abdominal type of respiration, and noisy and painful cough. The infection ran its course with a picture typical of a virus disease which did not respond to broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment. On an average the duration of the clinical course lasted 4 to 5 days, affecting almost all swine on a pig breeding farm, with single death cases. The morphologic changes observed in animals killed for diagnostic purposes were typical of a grippe infection. Isolated was a grippe virus A (Antimovo) 1/80/H3N2) the preliminary typisation of which showed close relation to strain A (victoria) 3/75/H3N2/. Serologic investigations using double blood samples from the affected pigs in double immunodiffusion test and hemagglutination-inhibition test demonstrated the etiologic role played by the isolated grippe virus.

[Pathomorphological changes in African swine fever in an African country].

Studies were carried out on morphologic changes in 27 pigs experimentally infected with a virulent virus of the African swine fever and in 61 pigs that has spontaneously developed the acute form of the disease. A description and 11 colour plates are given of the characteristic gross and microscopic lesions, consisting of strongly mainfested hemorrhagic diathesis, two-to fourfold enlargement of the spleen, and two-to threefold enlargement of the stomach, liver, mesenterial, kidney, and sternal lymph nodes. The digestive tract was shown to be thoroughly involved, most pronounced being the changes in the stomach and the large intestine. It was demonstrated that the basic histologic changes were localized in the central lymphoreticular system--spleen and lymph nodes, consisting in dystrophic and necrotic lesions of the lymphocytes (karyorrhexis and karyopycnosis), the reticular cells, and the cell elements of the blood vessels. A comparison is made with the morphologic changes in the case of classic swine fever, stating the most essential differences between the lesions in the two forms of the disease.

[Histopathological pattern of adenovirus infection in the calf].

Pneumo-enteritis is the clinical manifestation of adenovirus infection in calf. Proliferative alveolitis, endobronchitis, and peribronchitis with intranuclear inclusions in the epithelial cells, histiocytes, and macrophages were histologically recorded. Proliferative changes with minor pleomorphism of cells were recorded from lymph nodes and lymph follicles of spleen and intestines. The epithelial cells of the renal tubules and liver exhibited degenerative changes, while the endothelium of the capillaries was activated. Five Serotype-1 adenoviruses were isolated from the lung, liver, and kidneys of the foetuses. IE were recordable from the epithelial cells of kidneys and lung. Other calves were examined following natural infection with adenovirus and virus of the mucosa disease. Dystrophic and necrotic changes were recorded from their digestive organs, lymphocytolysis from spleen and lymph nodes (a characteristic change related to mucosa disease), and nephrosis with adenovirus inclusions from the epithelial cells of the renal tubules.

[Isolation of adenovirus type 1 from aborted cattle fetuses].

Five adenoviral strains, typed as adenovirus type 1, were isolated from aborted cattle foetuses, taken from farms with abortions in cows. The viruses were isolated from kidneys, lungs and livers of the foetuses. They were isolated from the kidney most frequenty (three strains). Intranuclear basophilic inclusions in the alveolar epithelium of the lungs and in the tubular epithelium of the kidneys have been established in the histological investigations of the internal organs of the foetuses. The isolation of adenoviruses from foetuses has been discussed as an infectious process, emerging as a result of a transplacental infection.

[Effect of aflatoxin on the serum profile and antibody formation in chickens].

Experiments were carried out to follow up the effect of aflatoxin on the production of hemagglutinating antibodies in birds vaccinated against Newcastle disease and the changes in the serum profile. Birds that had been given a feed mixture with 560 and 640 mcg per kg for 20 days showed a lower titer of hemagglutinating antibodies and a drop of the alpha1, alpha2, beta1, gamma2-globulin fractions as well as a rise of the albumin and gamma1-globulin fractions. The liver and kidneys of the treated birds showed dystrophic changes.

[Study and identification of the respiratory syncytial virus isolated from a leukemic cow].

A virus was isolated from the lymph nodes of a cow. By its cultural, physical, chemical, and biologic properties it proved identical with the standard bovine respiratory syncytial virus. It multiplied well in cell cultures of calf kidney at pH 7--7.5. Introduced in 20-day-old guinea pigs the virus caused anorexia, bristling up of hairs, stunting, and occasionally death. The inoculated guinea pigs developed pneumonia of a proliferative type with Langhans' giant cells. The interrlationship between the isolated virus and the standard oncorna virus, type C, is discussed.

[Cases of nacrobacillosis in calves].

Necrobacillosis was established in 48 out of a total of 90 calves aged from 1 to 6 months, raised on a common premise. The disease affected only calves under the age of 3 months, running a more severe course with high mortality in the younger animals. Along with the clinical manifestations associated with the organs involved there was also bradicardia in most of the diseased calves. Nonreactive necroses were observed in the digestive organs, liver, spleen, lungs, and lymph nodes with adjacent resorptive foci of histiocytes, fibroblasts, and giant cells.

[Morphological changes in the kidneys of pigs with an adenovirus infection].

Dystrophic and necrobiotic changes developed in the epithelium of the kidney tubuli of sucking pigs spontaneously and experimentally infected with adenoviruses. The epithelial cells showed hyperchromatosis of the nuclei, breaking up of the chromatin, and formation of nuclear function bodies. The swelling of the dystrophic cells produced certain amount of pressure on the adjacent capillaries. The pale colour of the kidney itselt was due to the dystrophy of the epithelium and the compression anemia. After the desquamation of the degenerated epithelial cells and their carrying away with the urine the capillaries became strongly dilatated. Groups of adjacent capillaries became macroscopically visible and assumed the appearance of a petechia. Edema in lymphoidcell proliferation were established in the interstitial tissue.

[Histopathology of Q rickettsiosis in sheep].

Examined was material taken from five sheep (ewes) and two weaned lambs having naturally contracted Qu rickettsiosis. Described are the clinical symptoms of the disease and the morphologic changes. The diseased animals showed rise in temperature (39.5--40.5 degrees C), loss of appetite, and depression. Some of the weaned lambs manifested slight cough and digestive troubles. Part of the animals showed nervous symptoms--tic movements of the head and limbs. Morphologically, the liver was edematired, of lower compactness, and the spleen was enlarged, the meninges being hyperemic and peppered with pinpointed hemorrhages. Histologically, a strong diffuse activation and proliferation of the liver capillary endothelium was established along with necrobiosis of the liver epithelial cells and a diffuse leukocyte infiltration. Established was also hyperplasia of the reticular cells and the lymph follicles of the spleen and the bronchial lymph nodes. The epithelial cells of the kidney tubules were involved in vacuolar dystrophy, and in the medular section there were fibroblastic proliferations with hyperemia. Inflammatory changes in the brain were also found.

[Demonstration of the infectious rhinotracheitis-pustular vuluovaginitis virus (IBR-IPV) in the placenta and aborted fetuses of cows].

A well expressed correlation was found to exist between the immunofluorescence and the histologic methods in the demonstration of IBR-IPV infection of fetuses and placentae in 75 cases of spontaneous undiagnosed abortions. If those that were positive by the immunofluorescence method were 100 per cent as many as 87 per cent of them showed coincidence with the results obtained by the histologic method. The isolation of the virus of IBR-IPV coincided in 44 per cent of the cases only. Clearest specific fluorescence, established most frequently, was demonstrated in the kidneys of the fetuses. It was found that contrast staining with Evans blue effectively inhibited the unspecific fluorescence. Exceptions in this respect were observed with some preparations of liver, lung, and placental tissues, where there were cells of unspecific fluorescence, which, by its character and localization differed essentially from the fluorescence that was specific for IBR-IPV. It is assumed that the immunofluorescence method performed at contrast staining with Evans blue makes possible the fast and precise diagnosis of IBR-IPV.

[Pathohistological changes in splenectomized sheep experimentally infected with Babesia ovis].

Studied were histopathologically the viscera (liver, lung, kidneys, heart lymph nodes, and brain) of 15 animals (10 ewes and 5 lambs), experimentally infected with blood taken from sheep donors having acute babesiasis. During the experimental period 9 of the animals died, and 6 were killed within the interval from the 4th to the 9th day. Dystrophic changes were observed in the epithelial cells of the liver and the kidney tubuli as well as pycnosis of the gangliar cells. In some of the tubuli there were hyalin cylindroids. The heart presented an edema of the endocardium with leucocyte infiltration. In the lymph nodes there were hyperemia with hemorrhages and edema with leucocyte infiltration of sinuses and follicles. It was established that in sheep babesiosis the characteristic morphologic changes appear on the fourth day. The dystrophic foci in the liver, the activation of the endothelium, the finding of hemosiderin in the Kupffer cells as well the diffuse leucocyte infiltration associated with the presence of parasites in the erythrocytes may well be referred to as histomorphologic signs in the postmortal diagnosis of babesiasis.
