[The ecologo-hygienic problem of soil pollution].

The article covers the ecologo-hygienic aspects of anthropogenic soil pollution, and important directions of research into its sanitary protection. The authors adduce data concerning the levels of actual soil pollution with chemicals and biological agents (microbiological and helminthological ones) in various centers of population, and discuss the variants of solving the ecologo-hygienic problems of soil protection in Russian Federation.

[Topical problems of society's waste handling].

The fact that the volume of waste steadily grows, makes its handling one of the most topical scientific, technical, and socioeconomic problems in the world. The article covers important ecological and hygienic problems of waste handling and the effects of waste of human health.

[Environmental and occupational problems in the utilization of industrial and home waste].

One of the acute hygienic problems of today is handling industrial and consumer wastes stored in Russia in the amount of 30 milliard tons; 30 million of solid garbage and 120 million tons of industrial wastes being formed. There are 4 garbage-handling and 10 garbage disposal plants built in the country. A third of them don't operate now. An absence of the initial selection in garbage collection causes the situation when only 3% of solid garbage is being processed. There is no state unified wastes recycling and utilizing system, no training of personnel to work out special technologies and do this work. Special attention should be given to medical wastes dangerous for the epidemiological situation, since they contain pathogenic microorganisms and helminth eggs; they may as well be contaminated by toxic and radioactive chemicals. A complex solution of the problems of industrial and consumer wastes handling is of vital importance for human health protection and protection of environment.

Environmental Pollution↗

[Sanitary and helminthic characteristics of soil].

Soil of 20% of economic districts of Russian Federation is slightly polluted by helminths (10 eggs per kg of soil), 64% is moderately polluted (11-100 eggs per kg), 16% much polluted (more 100 eggs per kg). Soil of agricultural fields is polluted 2-3 times more because of use of sewage and their sediments. Recommendations on protection of soil from pollution by helminths are given.

[Public health aspects of the assessment of industrial wastes at the present time].

The problem of environmental and human health protection against industrial waste pollution can be solved by implementing various organizational, technological, and technical measures. A great emphasis is laid on the significance of making sanitary and ecological expert examinations of introduced technologies, processes and products of industrial waste utilization. The most common way of utilizing the industrial waste products is currently to store them on the dumping and proving grounds, which causes a considerable soil pollution with various hazardous substances that may negatively affect human health.

[Present-time problems of medical waste].

To handle medical garbage is a urgent problem in Russia, which has been poorly solved so far. This kind of garbage is epidemiologically hazardous and may contain radioactive substances. The published sanitary rules have approved five hazard classes for medical garbage. Little attention is paid to technologies of their elimination.

[Ecologo-hygienic evaluation of the use of petroleum-refining waste for road construction in the lower Volga region].

A scheme has been developed for sanitary assessment of the safety of road building materials containing oil slurry waste. It includes 2 units: 1) sanitary and chemical studies and 2) ecological and toxicological ones. The sanitary and chemical unit consists of a preliminary stage, wherein priority waste-specific substances are selected, and two experimental studies air- and water migration ones that evaluate the environmental effects of the substances selected. The ecological and toxicological unit includes microbiological, phytotoxic, hydrobiological, and toxicological studies. This scheme of ecological and sanitary studies of road building composite materials containing oil slurry waste allows their ecological and toxicological safety to be comprehensively evaluated.
