Two monozygotic twin pairs discordant for female-to-male transsexualism.

Two monozygotic female twin pairs discordant for transsexualism are described. These reports double the number of such case studies in the current scientific literature. Interviews with the twins and their families indicated that unusual medical and life history factors did not play causal roles. However, inspection of medical records for one transsexual twin suggested that some early life experiences may have exacerbated tendencies toward male gender identification. In both pairs, the twins' gender identity differences emerged early, consistent with, but not proof of, co-twin differences in prenatal hormonal influences. The identification of additional discordant MZ female twin pairs can advance biological and psychological understanding of transsexualism. Suggestions for future research, based upon findings from these two twin pairs and from studies of female-to-male transsexuals, are provided.

Same or separate classrooms: a twin bill.

New legislation giving parents a voice in deciding their twins' school placement situation (same or separate classrooms) was passed in Minnesota in spring 2005. Since then, parents in several other states have started petitions and lobbying efforts to persuade their senators and representatives to follow suit. A review and update of these exciting developments is presented.

SuperQuads: a day in the life; research reviews: color-number association, finger-length ratios, twinning diets, athletic pairs.

The nature and frequency of quadruplet births are reviewed, followed by a close-up look at the 6-year-old monozygotic Mathias quadruplets. This essay is followed by reviews of new twin research on color-number association, male-female twins' finger-length ratios, and links between twinning and dietary practices. The article finishes by focusing on unusual twin athletes in football, basketball and golf, and on twin co-authors of a new book on the 1972 silver medal victory by the United States hockey team.

Twin transplants; twin study summary; human interest topics.

An overview of the nature and success of organ transplantation in monozygotic (MZ) twins is presented. Recent timely examples demonstrate the unique donor-recipient relationship shared by MZ co-twins. Next, a recent analysis of MZ co-twin differences in the epigenetic profile and associations with differences in life history factors is presented. This work has been the focus of considerable attention by scientists and the media. The final section of this column summarizes information and events concerning twins' longevity, screen careers, older parenting of twins and the origin of the word 'twin'.

The cognitive, behavioral, and personality profiles of a male monozygotic triplet set discordant for sexual orientation.

The neurohormonal theory of sexual orientation proposes that homosexual men and homosexual women are exposed prenatally to a hormonal environment that is similar to that of the other sex. Prenatal exposure to an opposite-sex hormonal environment may lead the nervous system to develop in a manner consistent with the opposite sex. If this cross-sex exposure occurs, one prediction would be that the cognitive ability profile of homosexual men would be similar to that of heterosexual women. This study examined a set of male monozygotic triplets, aged 21 years, discordant for sexual orientation: 2 of the triplets were heterosexual, 1 was homosexual. The triplets were administered measures of 23 domains of cognitive ability, as well as measures of sexual orientation and masculinity/femininity. On the measures of cognitive ability, the triplets performed similarly, yet consistent differences were found between the 2 heterosexual triplets and the 1 homosexual cotriplet. Differences having the same pattern were found for the number of Schafer homosexuality signs on the Rorschach, and on a homosexuality scale derived from items on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory--2 (MMPI-2). Responses from the homosexual triplet were in a more feminine direction than responses from his 2 heterosexual cotriplets on measures of masculinity-femininity, which included measures derived from Rorschach responses, the MMPI-2 Masculinity-Femininity scale, the Bem Sex Role Inventory, and the Boyhood Gender Conformity Scale. Responses to the 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire also distinguished the 1 homosexual triplet from the 2 heterosexual cotriplets. These findings support the view that the prenatal hormonal environment may have enduring effects on selected behavioral traits.

Twin paternity.

An unusual case of uncertain twin paternity is presented. New research on inbred strains of mice may hold important clues for paternity testing of twins in the future. Next, four recent twin studies examining selected topics in autism, color perception, language development and high-order pregnancy risk are reviewed. Finally, several unusual twin-related situations are variously considered with respect to their research significance and practical applications.

Between twins; research summaries; in the real world.

Research on unusually long birth intervals between twin and triplet deliveries is reviewed. A recent multicentre study reported gestational and survival data for 35 multiple birth sets from 12 centers, and evaluated conservative treatment strategies for mothers delivering one twin fetus. Next, findings from three recent twin studies are reviewed: effects of close inter-twin communication on longevity; case report of dizygous twins with a single chorion; and a case of discordance for hemihypertrophy in an MZ female twin pair. The article concludes with summaries of three interesting and informative anecdotal accounts of twins.
