Pathological survey of intracranial germinoma and pinealoma in Japan.

Pathologic survey was performed on 43 cases of intracranial germinoma and 12 cases of pinealoma. The present study suggests that, in Japan, the incidence of teratoma groups including germinoma is remarkably higher than that in U.S. and Europe, whereas the rate of true pinealoma is lower. Using ultrastructural, enzyme-histochemical, and fluorescence-histochemical methods for a few surgical specimens, a strong similarity between intracranial germinoma (so-called "pinealoma" with a two-cell pattern) and seminoma and dysgerminoma was confirmed. The true pinealoma could be classified as pineoblastoma and pineocytoma, according to the degree of pineocyte differentiation of the tumor cells, and as "neuroblastoma-like" and "pineal-like" on the basis of the histologic architecture.

Chronic myelogenous leukemia with reticulum-cell-sarcoma-like cell proliferation--significance of eosinophilic granules in sarcomatous cells.

A case of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) associated with proliferation of atypical cells resembling those of reticulum cell sarcoma (RCS-like cells) is presented. A number of immature eosinophils were present mingled with ordinary leukemic cells, which infiltrated in the bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, liver, lungs and testes. RCS-like cells either formed solitary nodular foci or randomly mingled with infiltrating leukemic cells. Charcot-Leyden crystals were seen in some areas where RCS-like cells proliferated. As a peculiar feature the presence of eosinophilic granules in some of the RCS-like cells was noted. They were proved to be immature form of specific granules of eosinophils by their staining properties and ultrastructural aspects. Based on these findings the myelogenous origin of RCS-like cells is suggested. The patient died of cerebral complication of aspergillosis.

Effect of exogenous glucocorticoids given during the terminal stages on the adrenocortical histology.

The adrenal histology of 107 adult autopsy cases hospitalized within 8 days before death was examined. Thirteen (21.7%) of 60 cases given glucocorticoids within 24 hr of death showed the zona reticularis and lower zona fasciculata composed of clear type cells, while only two (4.2%) of the remaining 47 cases without corticoid administration showed the same histology. The difference was significant (p < 0.05), and it was referred to the exogenous corticoids. Administration of adrenalin and/or noradrenalin did not significantly influence the adrenocortical histology. The effect of the corticoids depended partly on the diseases from which the patients suffered: the effect was not observed in cases of severe infection or myocardial infarction, but it was shown in cases of cerebral apoplexy and miscellaneous diseases. The above results, on the basis of clear/compact cell morphology, suggest that exogenous glucocorticoids occasionally suppress the pituitary release of ACTH under the stress of dying.

Hypereosinophilic multiple thrombosis. A proposal of a new designation of disseminated eosinophilic "collagen disease".

A case of marked chronic mature eosinophilia associated with multiple thrombosis in 30-year-old male is presented. Hitherto this sort of the disease has been categorized as DECD. Reviewing the autopsied cases of DECD, including our own case, DECD should not be categorized as a collagen disease because of the absent connective tissue degeneration and absent connective tissue degeneration and absent serological abnormalities. We rather noticed a certain relation between marked chronic mature eosinophilia and thrombus formation. Therefore, we propose here the term hypereosinophilic multiple thrombosis to express the pathomorphogenesis more precisely.

An autopsy case of metastasizing protuberant dermatofibrosarcoma.

An autopsy case of metastatic dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DP) together with the results of four sequential biopsies performed during his illness was reported. In this case, the tumor recurred repeatedly for 38 years in spite of intensive treatments. Finally, the tumor metastasized to the bilateral lungs, retroperitoneum and lumbar vertebrae. The direct cause of death was renal stones which may have been related to paraplegia of the lower limbs due to the vertebral metastasis. The metastasis appeared to have started at the time when the tumor showed marked atypism histologically. It was also recognized that there was an obvious difference in atypism between recurrent and metastatic tumors.

Suppression of atherosclerosis in cholesterol-fed rabbits by diltiazem injection.

The effects of diltiazem, a calcium antagonist, on the development of atherosclerosis were studied in Japanese white rabbits. The rabbits were examined at the end of 10 weeks on the following regimens; a diet of standard pellets and daily intraperitoneal (ip) injections of saline; a diet of pellets containing 1% cholesterol and daily ip injections of saline; or a diet of pellets containing 1% cholesterol and daily ip injections of diltiazem (50 mg). The plasma total and LDL cholesterol levels for the third group were significantly lower than those of the cholesterol diet group. Macroscopically, atheromatous lesions covered 26.7% +/- 6.7% (mean +/- SE) of the intimal surface of the aorta in the second group, and 0.7% +/- 0.3% in the third group (p less than 0.005). The levels of cholesterol, calcium, and uronic acid in the aortic tissue of the second group were significantly higher than those in the third. We concluded that diltiazem administered intraperitoneally suppresses the plasma total and LDL cholesterol elevation induced by the cholesterol diet and inhibits experimentally-induced atherosclerosis.
