A study of body hair density and distribution in normal women.

The distribution and density of terminal hair growth have been studied in 19 different body regions in 100 normal women of fertile age and 25 normal postmenopausal women. In accordance with earlier investigations an age-dependent variation in hair growth pattern was observed. None of the women in either group had terminal hair growth on the cheek, and on the breast region hair was limited to a small circumareolar area. Whereas facial terminal hair growth appeared to be less common than that reported in earlier studies of women from other countries, the frequency of terminal hair in other regions was found to be significantly higher in the Norwegian women. No difference in hair growth pattern between blondes and brunettes could be detected.

Body hair growth in women: normal or hirsute.

The distribution and density of terminal hair growth in 19 different body regions in 113 women of fertile age complaining of embarrassing hair growth (group A) are compared with the findings in 100 normal women of comparable age (group B). Apart from three regions the former group demonstrated significantly more frequent and heavier hair growth than the latter. A stepwise discriminant analysis showed that the best separation between the two groups could be obtained by assessing the hair growth in the lip, chin, and public region. With this set of variables, four women from group A were incorrectly classified as belonging to group B and one woman from group B was classified as belonging to group A. The serum concentration of testosterone was significantly higher and the serum concentration of TeBG significantly lower in group A than in group B (P less than 0.001). Menstrual pattern, body weight, and hereditary factors in group A vs. group B support the impression that the increased terminal hair growth found in group A is due to physiological factors. From the present data it can be concluded that appraisal of the facial and public terminal hair growth should in most cases be sufficient for separating possible hirsutism from normal hair growth in women.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome; a retrospective study of the therapeutic effect of ovarian wedge resection after unsuccessful treatment with clomiphene citrate.

The therapeutic effect of ovarian wedge resection (OWR) was evaluated in a study of 92 patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome who did not conceive after clomiphene treatment. The frequency of ovulation was significantly higher after OWR than before (0.02 less than P less than 0.05). Postoperatively, 58 of the patients (63%) attained pregnancy one or more times, either spontaneously or after induction of ovulation. The beneficial effect of OWR on menstrual irregularities was significant (P less than 0.001).

Hyperprolactinaemia in polycystic ovary syndrome.

The incidence of hyperprolactinaemia in 91 consecutively examined patients with polycystic ovary syndrome was found to be 13% thus considerably lower than previously reported. Galactorrhoea and radiological abnormalities of the sella turcica were observed frequently in patients with elevated serum prolactin levels, whereas the number of women attaining regular periods after ovarian wedge-resection was significantly smaller than in the normoprolactinaemic women. The serum levels of LH, FSH, oestradiol and testosterone measured in the hyperprolactinaemic patients showed no major differences from those of the normoprolactinaemic patients.

Controlled hypotension in hip joint surgery. An assessment of surgical haemorrhage during sodium nitroprusside infusion.

Controlled hypotension, combined with light balanced anaesthesia, was employed during total hip replacement operations on 25 patients. Sodium nitroprusside (Nipride, Roche), in the form of a 0.01 per cent (100 micrograms/ml) infusion, was used as a hypotensive agent. The mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) was lowered from 108 to 64 mmHg (range 60--70) (P less than 0.001). The average blood loss during the operations was 212 ml and none of the patients required homologous blood transfusion. In comparison with 25 normotensive patients undergoing similar surgery, the difference in the mean volume of haemorrhage between the two groups was 826 ml (P less than 0.001). The difference in the total haemorrhage, however, between the same two groups was 518 ml (mean) (P less than 0.01). The results were compared with those of another investigation in which epidural anaesthesia was used to diminish bleeding during surgery on the hip.
