Carcinoembryonic antigen in bronchogenic carcinoma.

The authors determined carcinoembryonic antigen concentration in the sera of patients with bronchogenic carcinoma, some noncancerous lung diseases and in the sera of healthy subjects in order to assess the contribution of this method to the diagnosis of bronchogenic carcinoma with regard to the morphological type. Increased levels of carcinoembryonic antigen in patients with bronchogenic carcinoma were observed in 32% of cases. Among the morphological types of bronchogenic carcinoma statistically significant differences were not found. The comparison of bronchogenic carcinoma regardless of the type with the groups of noncancerous lung diseases and healthy subjects revealed statistically significant differences.

Cytogenetic study of malignant and benign effusions.

The direct chromosome study of mitotic cells in effusions was performed in 49 patients with malignant and 5 with benign effusions. Cytogenetic analysis correctly identified 69.3% of malignant effusions, standard cytology 79.6%. With both methods combined 95.9% of all cases were correctly diagnosed as malignant. The presence of mitoses in the effusions was found to be an unfavorable prognostic sign and was correlated with a shorter survival. Chromosome analysis of the malignant effusions revealed stemlines with extensive numerical and structural rearrangements. No consistent marker chromosome was detected in the histologically similar tumor types. Normal chromosomes. No 1 and 14 were preferentially lost from the karyotype of malignant cells. In two samples double minutes were observed.

[Intrapulmonary thymoma].

A 53-year old woman had for 14 years been under clinical observation for a right-sided intrapulmonary thymoma. As a terminal development, metastases appeared in the liver. The tumour was not classified until necropsy, and that with the assistance of electronoptic proof of the epithelial squamous appearance of large tumour cells.

[Beta-2-microglobulin in bronchogenic carcinoma].

In 77 patients with bronchogenic carcinoma and 46 patients with non-tumorous lung diseases the serum concentration of beta-2-microglobulin was assessed. The revealed differences between groups were not statistically significant. The group with bronchogenic carcinoma was sub-divided by morphological types: epidermoid carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, small-cell and large cell carcinoma. The group of large cell carcinomas was too small for statistical evaluation, the other differences between different morphological types were not statistically significant. Assessment of the serum concentration of beta-2-microglobulin is of no value in the differential diagnosis of bronchogenic carcinoma.
