[Pathogenetic mechanisms of cyst formation in the breasts and mammae].

Mammary glands and endocrine organs of human females ranging in ages from 6 months to 25 years (228 cases) as well as in intact, castrated, hypophysectomized, thyroidectomized, adrenalectomized young virgin female rats treated with steroid hormones and thyroxin were studied by various morphological methods. The process of cyst formation in female mammary glands was found to be enhanced by intensified endocrine influences on them in the interval of 6 months to 2 1/2 years (the effect of maternal hormones received by the baby with milk) and from 11 to 15 years (physiological activation of endocrine glands) and to decline in the period of relative quiescence at the age of 2 1/2 to 11 years. Both hyperestrogenism and hypercorticism and hypofunction of the thyroid gland as well as dysfunction of adenohypophysis and neuro-trophic apparatus of mammary glands are important in the pathogenesis of cysts.

[Morphometry of the adrenals].

The authors report on the method of determination of the weight indices of the adrenyl gland glomerular, testicular-reticular and medullar zones with a spheroid shape; it is substantiated by mathematical analysis of a plasticine model of the adrenal gland, whose characteristics approached the actual ones. The method was particularly accurate in determination of the weight of the fascicular-reticular and glomerular zones, and less--in determination of the weight of the medullary layer, the method's error being 0.6-0.9% in the first case, 2.7-3.5% in the second and 5.3-6.4 in the last.

The technique for application of measuring ruler for karyometry.

A technique for measuring sectional plane of nuclei with the help of measuring ruler is described. The ruler may be of any transparent or opaque material with contours of measuring figures plotted on it. The area of the latter corresponds to that of nuclei projection maximal for this or that class under definite magnification. The article comprises also calculations of classes of nuclei, areas of measuring figures. The process of measurement consists in confrontation of the projection of the nucleus under study with measuring figures plotted on the measuring ruler in strict sequence from a smaller figure to bigger one.

[Effect of adrenal function on breast development in the female].

Adrenal and mammary glands were investigated postmortem in 186 young or mature girls as well as in nulliparous women who suddenly died from injuries. The levels of mammary gland development was assessed with regard to their mass, the percentage of fibrous tissue and with regard to mathematically processed cartographic data on sectional histo-topography. Cytometry and karyometry of glomerular and reticulo-fascicular zones of adrenal glands were performed. A total estimation of adrenal glands activity was determined by a cumulative morphofunctional index. Morphofunctional relationship of adrenal and mammary glands was studied in females aged 8-25. The study revealed that accelerated development of mammary glands in 12-16-year-old persons was accompanied by increased activity of adrenal cortex while in those aged 22-25 it was followed by the enlargement of adrenal gland mass and size of fasciculo-reticular zone without any essential alterations of other morphofunctional parameters.

[Changes in the mammary glands, adrenal glands and thyroid gland in young female rats after castration and administration of sex hormones and hydrocortisone].

Experiments were conducted on young female rats with the aid of morphological, morphometric and histochemical methods; a study was made of the adrenal glands, mammary and the thyroid glands under conditions of castration and administration of synestrol, progesterone, both sex hormones, hydrocortisone. Sex hormones proved to produce a fulminant growth of the glandular tree against the background of reduction of the functional activity of the thyroid gland and relatively high indices of the hormonal activity of the fasciculo-reticular zone of the adrenal glands. A harmonious development of the glandular tree of the mammary glands was noted only under the effect of a simultaneous administration of synesterol and progesteron. A shift in the hormonal balance in the direction of synestrol caused the appearance of pathological deviations in the mammary glands by the type of cystic mastopathy. Under conditions of castration hydrocortisone produced a moderate stimulating influence on the mammary glands only in case of a prolonged action.
