Helping elderly women survive rape using a crisis framework.

1. As social, legal, and medical norms have changed, there has been an increase in older women reporting rape, but it is estimated that many still do not report. 2. Nurses should be prepared to offer help to women who report a rape and identify those who have not reported but are in need of assistance. 3. Nurses also must work with others to change attitudes toward the elderly and elderly rape victims in particular, advocate for services for these women, and provide primary prevention education at the community level.

Older women: victims of rape.

Older female rape victims usually live alone, are raped by strangers, experience physical force and injury, and also are robbed. Rape trauma syndrome, a nursing diagnosis, consists of an acute phase of disorganization, and a long-term phase of reorganization of the victim's lifestyle. Rape victims experience emotional, physical, and cognitive reactions to the trauma of rape. Nursing actions can include providing specific interventions to victims during the acute phase, identifying victims during routine exams, referring victims for ongoing counseling, conducting community education programs on primary prevention and available services, and participating in longitudinal rape studies.

Nursing diagnosis as content organizer.

The junior year faculty in a baccalaureate nursing program reorganized nursing content around nursing diagnosis. This revision served to highlight nursing process better, made the sequence of classes more logical, reduced repetition and made the relationship of individual classes to each other clearer. Students and faculty concluded that skills in analysis, synthesis, and problem solving were greatly enhanced by this format.

RN to BS in nursing: historical review leads to articulation agreement.

Historically, registered nurses who have graduated from associate degree or diploma programs and who wish to obtain a baccalaureate degree in nursing have been required to pass challenge examinations to obtain credit for their previous nursing knowledge. A review of this university's policy regarding challenge examinations convinced faculty to establish a transition course and to actively pursue articulation agreements with local community colleges. Through these agreements, RN students would be granted 29 credits and bypass the junior year. This article is written to encourage others to review their policies to facilitate educational mobility for the RN/BS student.
