[Alpha 1-antitrypsin as a tumor marker].

In this work we intended: a) to confirm the correlation between the increase of serum levels of alpha 1-antitrypsin (ATT) and neoplastic disease; b) to verify in what tumoural diseases the increase of ATT has a specific significance. Therefore we have examined 164 patients: 60 represented the control group and 104 were suffering from neoplastic diseases. We have subdivided the nest group according to histological type and tumour location. The result of this work has demonstrated that the increase of ATT is really determined by the existence of neoplastic disease, more than histological type or location of cancer. The AAT represents a diagnostic index of neoplastic diseases, highly sensitive but little specific.

Proton relaxation mechanisms and the measurements of r phi, r psi and transannular interproton distances in gramicidin S.

Monoselective, Rio(SE), biselective, Rio(i,j), and nonselective proton spin-lattice relaxation rates have been measured for dilute solutions of gramicidin S in dimethyl sulfoxide and used to evaluate cross-relaxation rates (sigma ij = Rio(i,j)-Rio(SE)) and Fi ratios (Fi = Ri(NS)/Rio(SE)). The cross-relaxation parameters, sigma, and Fi ratios measured for backbone gramicidin S protons predict that the same correlation time, tau c = 1.2 X 10(-9)s, modulates all the dipolar proton-proton interactions and that these interactions represent the main source for the proton spin-lattice relaxation process. The larger relaxation rates for amide versus alpha-protons of the backbone are attributed to dipolar relaxation between 14N and its directly bonded protons and is an approximate measure of the extent of this. The intrabackbone proton-proton distances, evaluated from sigma values, were consistent with the antiparallel beta-plated sheet/beta II'-turn conformation previously proposed for gramicidin S in solution.

[Research on a compound with psychotropic activity. V - a new derivative of pyrrolo[2,1-d][1,5]benzothiazepin-6,6-dioxide: synthesis and sedative activity].

The following compounds have been synthesized according to a previously tested route, of the 9-chloro-, 9-trifluoromethyl- and 9-methoxy-5-phenylpyrrolo[2,1-d][1,5]benzothiazepin-6,6-dioxide (II a-c), 9-chloro- and 9-trifluoromethyl-5-p-nitrophenylpyrrolo[2,1-d][1,5]benzothiazepin-6,6-dioxide (II d, e), 5-(4-pyridyl)pyrrolo[2,1-d][1,5]benzothiazepin-6,6-dioxide (III) and 5-(3-pyridyl)pyrrolo[2,1-d][1,5]benzothiazepin-6,6-dioxide (IVa) with the 9-chloro- and 9-trifluoromethyl- derivatives (IV b, c) are reported. The sedative action in the rat was tested against the motor activity induced by amphetamine. The 9-chloro-5(3-pyridyl)pyrrolo[2,1-d][1,5]benzothiazepin-6,6-dioxide was particularly active and showed sedative action superior to that of diazepam. Marked sedative activity was observed with 9-methoxy-5-phenylpyrrolo[2,1-d][1,5]benzothiazepin-6,6-dioxide (NF19) and 9-chloro-5-p-nitrophenylpyrrolo[2,1-d][1,5]benzothiazepin-6,6-dioxide (NF20).

[Adaptation to hypoxia in liver cirrhosis: the role of 2,3-DPG (author's transl)].

By observing a group of 20 patients with liver cirrhosis, we have clarified some features concerning the tissue hypoxia, which is often present in such a disease. By determining the levels of the haemoglobin and of the intraerythrocytic 2,3-DPG, and by evaluating the acid-base state of such patients, we have emphasized the increased output of the 2,3-DPG as mechanism of adaptation to hypoxia associated with hepatic cirrhosis, both in subjects with anemia and alkalosis and in subjects without anemia but with alkalosis.
