Copper interaction on the long-term potentiation.

The role of copper on the CA1 piramidal neurons and their sinaptic connections to the Schaffer's collateral was investigated using the field excitatory post-sinaptic potential (fEPSP). The same fEPSP was used to study copper effects on Long-term potentiation (LTP). We have found that copper 10 microM has an inhibitory action on the fEPSP. Similar effects were demonstrated with 10 microM of GABA. Moreover, copper showed a strong inhibitory action on the consolidated LTP. However, copper washout left a significant and persistent excitatory response. In our opinion, copper shows a dual sinaptic effect depending on the sinaptic experience.

[Noncardiogenic pulmonary edema associated with hydrochlorothiazide use].

A 54 years old female patient with a mitral valve prolapse and a rheumatoid arthritis treated with steroids was admitted with dyspnea and hypotension, that started 30 min after taking a pill containing enapril and hydrochlorothiazide. Hemodynamic monitoring with a Swan-Ganz catheter showed a pulmonary capillary pressure of 5 mm Hg, a systemic vascular resistance of 887 (dyn sec)/cm5 and a cardiac output of 10 l/min. The patient had a history of adverse reactions to thiazides and responded to volume replacement, dopamine and steroids.

[Miliary tuberculosis as a complication of BCG immunotherapy in cancer of the bladder. Case report].

Intravesical administration of BCG may be used as an ancillary immunotherapy after endoscopic resection for cancer of the bladder. Local side effects are usually mild. Here is reported a patient who developed miliary tuberculosis after this form of therapy. Radiologic studies of the thorax and liver biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. The patient recovered after treatment with anti-tuberculosis drugs (TA-81 scheme). Epithelial trauma may be invoked as an alteration facilitating this complication. Although it develops infrequently, patients with bladder cancer treated with BCG must be monitored for this complication.
