The diagnosis of epiphora can be greatly aided by a special radiologic technique, performed during bilateral injection of contrast medium into the lacrimal passages and utilizing seriography, magnification and image subtraction. The authors describe the technique, discuss the interpretation of the various radiologic patterns, and stress the importance of this method for evaluating inflammation, stenoses and functional alterations of the lacrimal passages.

Slow waves in isolated jejunal segments have been shown, in at least two studies, to have an increased percentage of neither prograde nor retrograde progression. Instead the pattern has been characterized as "nonpropagating" by Johnson and Sarna et al., and "chaotic" by others. We compared gastric drainage produced by a Roux-Y created with a single transection, with gastric drainage produced by a Roux-Y created in a jejunal segment isolated between two transections. Theoretically, this avoids the retrograde slow waves produced by a single transection. Ten dogs of either gender were divided into two groups of five. One group was given a truncal vagotomy, hemigastrectomy, and a standard Roux-Y drainage with a single jejunal transection; the other five were given the same operation with a distal jejunal transection and anastomosis 25 cm beyond the jejunojejunostomy (thus creating the Roux-Y in an isolated segment). In the approximate 50-day follow-up, 3 of 5 animals with standard preparations developed considerable difficulty in maintaining nutrition and developed hugely dilated stomachs. Animals with stomachs drained by the isolated jejunal segment Roux-Y had less difficulty maintaining nutrition and experienced minimal gastric dilatation. These findings were confirmed by upper gastrointestinal series at 2 weeks and at autopsy. In conclusion, this study shows that gastric drainage following truncal vagotomy and hemigastrectomy is enhanced by a Roux-Y created in an isolated jejunal segment.
Mesotheliomas are malignancies of the pleural, pericardial, and peritoneal surfaces with a mean survival of less than 1 year from the time of diagnosis (1). While mesotheliomas were extremely rare in the first half of this century, the incidence of these tumors has increased enormously in the last several decades. Presently, 2-3 thousand people in the US develop and die of mesothelioma each year (1). It is estimated that approximately 80% of mesotheliomas develop in people with a history of occupational asbestos exposure or in individuals with family member(s) professionally exposed to asbestos that brought home fibers on their clothing (1). Although conventional wisdom dictates that asbestos is the most commonly associated "environmental" factor with mesothelioma, asbestos does not transform human mesothelioma cells in tissue culture (2). This suggests that additional carcinogens act in concert with asbestos to cause mesothelioma. Recent evidence indicated that Simian Virus 40 (SV40) preferentially causes mesotheliomas in hamsters, and that SV40 is present in up to 80% of human mesotheliomas in the US and in Europe (reviewed in ref. 3 and 4).

BACKGROUND: The present study focuses on psychological and psychopathological aspects in children and adolescents with scoliosis. METHODS: The case series included 28 subjects with scoliosis (7 males, 21 females; range 9-25 years; mean age 15.8 years) admitted to the Dept. of Orthopaedics of Gaslini Institute and referred to our observation. Psychological approach included semi-structured interviews focused on the evolution of scoliosis and based on questions about consciousness of illness, family and patient emotional reactions during treatment; familial, social and school adaptation; body image; onset of psychopathological disorders. Family relational and educational attitudes were also considered. The following psychological tests were also performed: Raven Progressive Matrices; "Draw-a-Person" test; Sacks' battery of incomplete sentences to evaluate cognitive aspects, body image, familial and social relationships, interactive aspects. RESULTS: During adolescence consciousness of illness appeared concomitantly with the beginning of treatment. Most subjects presented intellectual-relational compensation strategies, but in a reasonable number of cases they showed insecurity and inferiority feelings. On a conscious level, body image appeared normal in most cases, but unconsciously (in 45% of cases) there were anguish aspects related to feelings of body deterioration. During long-term treatments anxious reactions, sometimes temporary, (in 36% of cases) and depressive aspects (in 9% of cases) were observed. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained stress the importance of the family and the medical staff in providing a reassuring and firm support, in order to face difficulties related to the patient's illness.
