The investigation of anthropometric dimensions of the body and head, lung function tests and blood pressure was carried out in 3 separate groups. The analysis of 'distances' between particular pairs of the analyzed groups was performed by Penrose's CH2 and its components CQ2 and (v-l/v)CZ2. It is pointed to various ways of diversification of particular characteristics, which is likely to depend on different selective inertia of particular traits, that is, on different intensity of the effect of genetic and/or ecological factors on their formation. It is shown that as many different biological characteristics of human groups as possible should be taken into consideration for the calculation of 'distances'.

Results of a part of multidisciplinary studies in six villages on the island of Hvar (Yugoslavia) are presented. Six quantitative properties of dermatoglyphics were analysed (TRC, PII, a-b, b-c and c-d ridge counts, and atd angle). "Biological distances" among the surveyed couples from all six villages were analysed using Penrose's C2H, and its components: C2Q and (v-1/v)C2Z with regard to sex and possibility of determining the direction of endogamy or exogamy. Significant correlation between "geographical distances" and (v-1/v)C2Z is obtained for males, indicating that the social organisation in the examined rural population, from the point of view of demography, has some influence on the distribution of the dermatoglyphical characters.

An analysis of the digito-palmar dermatoglyphs obtained from 231 inhabitants of the Island of Hvar, divided into two groups according to some sociocultural differences, is presented. The quantitative features do not reveal heterogeneity between the groups, while some qualitative palmar dermatoglyphic features are statistically significantly different. The results are discussed in the light of the possible influence of some different evolutionary processes.

25 populations of the rain forest and 44 of the open country, all descended from the West-Central African stock which lived in the latter biome, are compared for body weight and height. On a log weight/height diagram, the 69 populations cluster along a straight line which intersects the lines of equal body weight/surface ratio: the shorter the body size, the lower the ratio tends to be. The rain forest populations are concentrated in the lower part of the bivariate distribution. The shortest one, the Mbuti Pygmies, has a very low ratio despite a relatively heavy weight. The shorter stature of the rain forest populations seems to be largely genetic in origin; it probably results from selective pressure exerted by the thermal stres in this hot and wet biome where sweating is of low thermolytic efficiency. The amount of reduction of adult stature depends for a large part on the number of generations spent in the forest by the population. Line A (in figure 1) is similar to a growth trend. The 69 populations differ genetically by the target that growth has to reach on a common log weight/height trend line. They achieve this differentiation through different speeds of growth.
