Rental projections in the adult Xenopus laevis: a study with cobalt filling technique.

Cobaltic-lysine complex was used to show retinal projections in adult Xenopus laevis. Retinal fibres partially decussate in the chiasma, and terminate on both sides in the nucleus ovoidalis, lateral geniculate complex, pretectal area, optic tectum, and in the basal optic nucleus. Cobalt filled fibres were found in the preoptic area, dorsal hypothalamic area, and in the periventricular region close to the wall of the third ventricle.

Physical growth of children born small for gestational age.

In a longitudinal study the postnatal physical growth of 188 small for gestational age and 225 appropriate for gestational age children was compared. A significant retardation in weight, stature, head circumference and osseous development of SGA children was observed even at the age of 3 years.

Possible dominant inheritance of the idiopathic hypercalcemic syndrome.

A girl, aged 16 months, with idiopathic hypercalcemia (failure to thrive, characteristic face, supravalvular aortic stenosis) was observed. Her serum calcium level was between 14 and 20 mg/100 ml. Both her father and brother were mentally retarded and had calcium deposits in their corneae. Their serum calcium values were 11.9 and 13.0 mg/100 ml, respectively, with increased urinary output of calcium. The family history is suggestive of autosomal dominant inheritance of the disease.

The predictive value of glucose utilization rate in neonatal hypoglycaemia of small-for-gestational-age infants.

The glucose utilization constant K was determined in 50 small-for-gestational-age neonates. In 11 cases the K value was higher than 2.0, and 5 out of these babies developed asymptomatic hypoglycaemia. In 39 infants the K value was under 2.0, and except in one false negative instance, no hypoglycaemia was observed. The results suggest that early determination of the glucose disappearance rate is useful in predicting the probability of hypoglycaemia.
