[A case of juvenile priapism (author's transl)].

A case of juvenile priapism is presented following cortisone and penicillin treatment for a traumatic lesion of the oesophagus. Increased coagulability from such treatment is discussed as causative factor. The importance of early surgical intervention is stressed and the methods of choice presented.

[Investigations on the determination of doxycycline concentrations in biological material by high pressure liquid chromatography and the agar diffusion method (author's transl)].

A new high performance liquid chromatographic method for quantitative analysis of doxycycline has been compared with the microbiological assay. Both analytical methods yielded the same results of nearly 100% recovery when doxycycline was incubated with serum, lung-, or liver-homogenate (Table 1). The advantages of the chromatographic method over the microbiological method are i. short and simple way of analysis (Fig. 1), ii. need of only small amounts of biological material. In a pilot study doxycycline - after i.v. application to mice - could be analyzed in good agreement by both methods (Fig. 2). The microbiological analysis yielded in slightly lower serum- or organ-levels what might be due to an inactivation of the antibiotic attached to proteins to some extend.

Effect of naftidrofuryl on high energy phosphates, glycogen, lactate and pyruvate in mouse hearts during asphyxia and post-asphyctic recovery.

The effect of naftidrofuryl (40 micrograms/g i.p.) on the ATP, phosphocreatine (PC), glycogen, lactate and pyruvate contents of the heart during respiratory arrest and postanoxic recovery was studied in mice. Naftidrofuryl increased he PC-content of the heart of normal mice. It did not prevent the metabolic changes brought about by 1 min anoxia but accelerated the post anoxic recovery of the depleted PC-content on account of delayed replenishment of the reduced glycogen stores. The changes in the ATP, lactate and pyruvate contents were not affected.

[Discussion of a spontaneous uretero-colonic fistula with stone formation in the rectum (author's transl)].

The unusual course of a vesico vagino-rectal fistula with spontaneous development of a uretero-colonic fistula in a patient with carcinoma of the cervix is presented. After a double-barrel colostomy had been performed kidney function remained normal for many years. Because of incontinence of the anal sphincter the urinary drainage has been undisturbed inspite of stone formation in the rectum.

A high pressure liquid chromatographic method for the determination of tetracyclines in blood and organs of experimental animals.

A high-pressure liquid chromatographic method has been developed for the quantitative analysis of tetracyclines from biological material. Tetracyclines can be extracted from serum or organ homogenates by means of acetonitrile containing buffer. The extract is chromatographed on a reversed-phase column and the tetracyclines are monitored spectrophotometerically at 357 nm. Tetracyclines, pyrrolidinomethyl-tetracycline, 4-epitetracycline, and doxycycline are thus separated within 8 min. The lowest concentration for the intact molecule detectable are 0.2 micrograms/ml serum or blood and 0.4 micrograms/g organ. In a comparative study the new extraction procedure and the chromatographic analysis yielded the same results as a microbiological method.

Distribution of pyrrolidinomethyl-tetracycline (rolitetracycline) and tetracycline in blood and various organs of mice measured by high pressure liquid chromatography.

By means of a newly developed high-pressure liquid chromatographic method the organ distribution of tetracycline (TC) and pyrrolidinomethyl-tetracycline (PMT) has been studied. When mice were treated with 50 mg/kg i.v. TC or PMT these antibiotics could be detected in all organs investigated (liver, kidney, heart, lung, muscle, spleen). Especially high concentrations were found in liver and kidneys, where TC and PMT could be detected up to 6 h. In animals treated with PMT part of the PMT applied decomposed slowly yielding TC, which was found together with PMT in blood and all organs.

Preparative polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of nuclear RNA.

A method is described for the separation of nuclear RNA by preparative polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Separation is performed on a slab gel. The elution chamber system is rectangular. Total nuclear RNA can be fractionated into the prominent RNA species 4 - 7S, 18S and 28S RNA. The less prominent RNA, especially the high molecular weight precursor molecules of ribosomal RNA 45S (Mr = 4.1 X 10(6)) and 32S (Mr = 2.1 X 10(6)) can be separated from the total nuclear RNA without contamination by other RNA. The time needed for a preparative run is 260 min.

[A new method of lymphadenography of the regional lymph nodes of the human urinary bladder. Findings relevant to cancer of the bladder (author's transl)].

Experience with and findings of a new method of indirect lymphography (endovesical lymphography) for roentgenologic visualization of lymph nodes and lymphatic vessels of the human urinary bladder are presented. After injection of Lipiodol Ultrafluid into the submucosal layer of the bladder wall all regional lymph node groups could be demonstrated. In cases of carcinoma of the bladder, endovesical lymphography provides early evidence of beginning carcinomatous infiltration of regional lymph nodes. Pedal lymphography as used thus far, provides information only about advanced lymphatic metastatic spread. It is possible that endovesical lymphography will yield new information leading to more accurate treatment of vesical carcinoma in terms of tumor staging.

Metabolism of protein and RNA in liver of rats deprived of tryptophan.

Rat lost body weight after the second day of feeding a tryptophan free diet. After 15 days of tryptophan deprivation, they had lost 17% of body weight, whereas pair-fed controls had gained weight. Liver weights of deprived rats were significantly lower than those of controls. Water, protein, RNA, and DNA in the livers were not significantly changed after 15 days of tryptophan deprivation. Amounts of free typtophan and alanine in livers of derpived rats decreased to 40% of the controls after 15 days, whereas amounts of most other amino acids were nearly constant. Protein synthesis in livers of deprived rats for 15 days was impaired to about 55% of controls. Incorporation of orotic acid into different types of cytoplasmatic and nuclear RNA remained unaffected up to the tenth day. After 15 days of deprivation, more orotic acid had been incorporated into RNA fractions that correspond to the precursor ribosomal fractions.

[A new method of demonstrating the regional lymph nodes of the urinary bladder (author's transl)].

Pedal lymphography as used up to now does not fully demonstrate the lymphatic drainage of the bladder. A new method is presented in which Lipiodol-Ultra-Fluid is injected into the submucosal layer of the bladder wall under endoscopic vision. In 27 endovesical lymphographies the following lymph nodes could be demonstrated: the anterior, lateral and posterior vesical, the obturator, the external and internal iliac and the common iliac nodes.

[Continuous irrigation of the bladder with acetic acid solution and its therapeutic effect on candida-infection].

Our clinical experience with acetic acid solution in the treatment of candida infection of the bladder was confirmed by in vitro experiments. We apply continuous bladder irrigation with increasing concentrations of acetic acid solution up to pH 5.0. The majority of patients had received antibiotics or cytostatic drugs and suffered from chronic and malignant diseases. A case report is given with endoscopic documentation of the influence of acetic acid solution on the bladder.
