[Prognostic value of histopathological parameters in epidermoid carcinoma of the vocal cords in T-1 stage].

In this paper are studied macro- and microscopically, 14 histopathologic parameters belonging to 37 patients suffering from vocal cord squamous cell carcinoma, stage T-la. All patients were submitted to cordectomy and followed up during a 5 years term, as a minimum. A discriminant analysis was performed in order to establish the relation between histopathologic parameters and local failure. Only two of them were statistically significative (p < 0.01): the structural type and the differential degree of tumor cells. The histopathological study allowed the prediction of 82 percent of local recurrences.

[Laryngocele. Report of a case of giant laryngocele associated with occult papillary carcinoma of the thyroid].

This gross laryngocele caused a chronic obstruction of the upper respiratory airway. Diagnosis become obvious because the aggravation of a chronic bronchopathy slightly developed, which run into a cor pulmonale chronic as well. Incidentally linked with a neck metastasis spread out from a hidden papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland. The laryngocele was treated by extramucous lateral thyrotomy and the carcinoma removed through subtotal thyroidectomy.

[Comparative study of histology and flow cytometry results obtained in 2 groups of laryngeal tumors, glottic and supraglottic, in T-1 stage].

We studied histophatological parameters and DNA content in 27 supraglottic and 37 glottic T-1 squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. The DNA content was determined by the Hedley method in paraffin-embedded sections of formalin-fixed blocks in an EPICS Profile flow cytometer. We studied 14 histopathological parameters and only 3 were statistically different in both groups of tumors: Differentiation, infiltrative degree and mitoses. There weren't statistical differences in DNA content (DNA index and proliferation index).

[An analysis of the DNA content in a stage-T-1 epidermoid carcinoma of the vocal cord. The methodology and results].

DNA content of tumor cells determined by flow cytometry has been correlated to biologic behavior and to prognosis for many solid tumors, but insufficient data has been accumulated for squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. In order to know the predictive value of this parameter in the prognosis of T-1 vocal cord squamous cell carcinoma, we have studied 27 patients submitted to cordectomy. The patients outcome was followed for a minimum of five years or until death, DNA content was determined by Hedley method in paraffin-embedded sections of formalin-fixed blocks in an EPICS Profile flow cytometer. 24 of these tumors were diploid (89%) and 3 aneuploid (11%). We didn't find statistical correlation between ploidy and survival, local failure or someone of the pathological parameters.

[Study of the facial nerve motor pathway with the transcranial cerebral magnetic stimulation technique].

Transcranial magnetic stimulation method permits the study of the facial nerve in all its aspects (motor cortex-alpha moto-neurone-facial muscle) in an non invasive and painless way. We studied 12 patients using two levels of stimuli, the first was at an occipital level and the second at the primary motor cortex in the frontal lobe. We compared the results of this technique with those obtained by electric stimulation of the nerve.

[Endogenous peroxidase activity of the laryngeal epithelium: experimental study].

Twenty vocal cords were studied. The used animals were rabbits. Beta-blockers and beta-stimulants were perfused by the jugular vein. Variations in endogenous peroxidase were observed in electron microscopy. The activity of endogenous peroxidase can be used according to our results as tracer of the autonomic innervation of the vocal cord.

[Infraorbital bone hemangioma].

Osseus hemangioma is a rare tumor. Its concept and a etiology are not well established. We preset a review and a case of this tumor located in the upper maxilla. Clinical, of this exploration and pathology are studied in this paper. Antigen in factor VIII has been observed. Considerations on different diagnosis are made.

[Nasal mucociliary function in children with recurrent infections of the airways].

Nasal mucociliary function has been studied in 21 children suffering recurrent airway infections. Previously, cystic fibrosis, immune deficits and allergy were discharged. 38 per cent of these patients had alterations in the mucociliary transport and in this group, it was observed an increase of bronchiectasis, permanent rhinorrhea and serous otitis media.

[Flow cytometry. Its prognostic value in cancer of the head and neck].

The authors introduce an historical review and technical information on the management of this technique. The current condition of this matter is commented on, with special interest in head and neck tumors. Very few, contradictory papers have been published on laryngeal tumors concerning the prognostic value of aneuploid tumors.

[Chondrosarcoma of the sinuses: an infrequent tumor].

The case of 69 year old male patient who developed sinusal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is presented. At the time of diagnosis the tumor had spread into the intracranial cavity, which explains why no surgical treatment was carried out. A combined palliative treatment of chemotherapy and radiotherapy was used which did not improve the course of the tumor. The rare location of this form of tumor is discussed. Also commented on are the therapeutic--both surgical and other modalities (chemotherapy and radiotherapy)--difficulties encountered with this condition, given the little experience accumulated with it and its habitual resistance to the therapeutical regimens employed.

[Assessment of vertebrobasilar insufficiency using magnetic resonance angiography].

We present the protocol for diagnosis of VBI followed by ENT and Radiology Departments of the Valencia University General Hospital, using the 2D-PC magnetic resonance angiography technique (MRA) with variable VENC (30 and 40 cm/s) with a SIGMA 1.5 T Advantage system version 5 x with the corresponding software review 5.2 (General Electric Medical Systems, Milwaukee, WI, USA). After a coronal angiographic projection is obtained in a neutral position on an axial plane of localization, the patient head is set at the maximum left and right rotation and hyperextension allowed by patient and system. In this way, a coronal angiographic sequence is obtained in order to visualize potential compressions, decreases of the flow, arterial loops, etc. MRA is a non-invasive technique that requires no contrast, does not expose the patient to ionizing radiation, and allows to change the position of the patient's head easily. Since no hospitalization is required and contraindications are minimal (e.g., implanted pacemakers...), we believe that MRA constitutes and ideal screening technique to assess the vertebro basilar system. The results obtained and the advantages provided by MRA over Doppler-ultrasound and X-ray angiography are showed.

[The histological study of adenopathies in laryngeal cancer with supraglottic localization].

A histopathologic study was made to establish the prognostic importance of lymph node involvement in operable supraglottic laryngeal carcinoma. A total of 51 cancer patients underwent supraglottic horizontal laryngectomy with bilateral cervical dissection. The number of adenopathies the presence of capsule rupture and type of corresponding infiltration were significantly related to survival (p < 0.01). Prognosis was poorer in patients with more than three metastatic adenopathies and/or capsule rupture of one or more of them. Patient survival in cases with capsule rupture affecting one or more nodes was 36%, versus 33% among patients with three or more metastatic nodes. It is concluded that (a) the poor survival rate observed among these patients points to the need for more aggressive treatment protocols; and (b) cervical dissection should be performed systematically not only for therapeutic purposes but also to improve patient prognosis.

[The effect of visual feedback exercises on balance in normal subjects].

The effects of visual feedback exercises on balance was studied in normal individuals, to evaluate the efficacy of visual feedback of postural oscillation in improving stability. A DINAS-CAN dynamometric platform designed by the Valencian Institute of Biomechanics (IBv) was used. Before to commencing training sessions, we determined the following parameters in each individual: (a) static stability, via posturography; and (b) individual ability to displace and voluntarily maintain the center of gravity within the limits of stability. All static measures were poorer after training, but the differences were not significant (p > 0.01). In contrast, the exercises performed via visual feedback of postural control improved significantly (p < 0.01). Training by visual feedback facilitates integration of visual, somatosensory, and vestibular information. In normal individuals, stability improves under excentric conditions, but no improvement is seen in the central resting position.
