Antidepressive properties of I-glutamine. Preliminary report.

A brief review of the literature on this topic, and a comparison of the results obtained in children by administrating l-glutamine with those obtained by other antidepressive drugs, is primarily presented. Having been tested in a sampler of 43 adults, affected by different forms of depressive, neurasthenic and dissociative illnesses, 1-glutamine is indicated as owning clear anti-depressive properties, and the asthenia as target-symptom for its therapeutical use. Out of the endogenous depression with slowed-down motor activity, indeed good results were found in all cases, in which a "vital" level had been reached by the illness. Since 1-glutamine is noticed being a precursor of GABA, this fact itself could explain its antidepressive properties, but it is necessary to remember that they very complex metabolism of the drug is still mostly unknown.

Giant cell tumor of the upper cervical spine: transmandibular-translingual access. Clinical case.

The authors describe the clinical case of a patient aged 18 years affected with giant cell tumor (GCT) at C3 who came to the surgical unit of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the Ospedale Maggiore in Bologna after being treated by surgery elsewhere. Particular attention is paid to surgical access by means of median transmandibuloglossotomy used in order to obtain a sufficiently wide surgical field that can adequately expose the vertebral segment affected by neoplastic disease. In particular, possible complications that may be observed postsurgery can be compared to other surgical approaches to the upper cervical spine and above all that there are no permanent clinical sequelae.

A syndrome from a possible GABA deficiency. Clinical-therapeutic report on 15 cases.

A detailed presentation of 15 case-histories of subjects of both sexes, drawn from all decennies of life from the first to the eight, suggesting a syndrome originated from a possible GABA deficiency, is carefully made. Such syndrome is believed to be characterized by basic depressive state, loss of the habit of stretching oneself, sleep disorders, mostly with early morning awakening, constipation and nuchal headache. The above symptoms have been associated to a deficiency of GABA after noting the very speed recovery after administration of N-dipropylacetic acid, an inhibitor of GABA transaminase.

Mirror speaking after neurosurgery. A case history.

The case is reported of a 23 year old patient, who at the age of nine underwent neurosurgery for an angiomatous meningioma of the right temporal lobe, and immediately afterwards realized he was able to speak backwards nearly as well as normally. Presently, the patient still retains this ability which is associated with analogous mirror reading and writing. Neurological examination and EEG, CT data as well as the scores of some neuropsychological tests are added.

[Case of palpebral nystagmus with a benign course].

A case of eye-lid nystagmus, synchronous to a vertical nystagmus, in a 35 year old female patient is extensively presented. Vestibular examinations and BAEPs were suggestive of an impairment of pontomesencephalic structures. Following an aspecific drug therapy the s. had a noticeable improvement with reduction of the symptomatology.

Behavior troubles in nursery school children and their possible relationship to pregnancy or delivery difficulties.

Thirty four children, 3-5 year old, of 3 nursery schools, with emotional inhibition or temper tantrums detected by the nursery staff, were investigated on difficulties in pregnancy or delivery, by specifically asking their mothers. Compared to a matched control group, the mothers of probands reported more anxious pregnancies (.025), more somatic disturbed pregnancies (.005), experienced more foetal hypermotivity (.05), and their deliveries were more anomalous (.005). The vital conditions of their new-borns were affected by more distress (.025). Since there is an increasing amount of literature stressing on one hand on relationships between pregnancy and delivery difficulties and future biopsychological and social maladjustment, and on the other hand on childhood antecedents of adult mental diseases, an early detection and a correct causality are the first steps to right therapeutic interventions.

[2 cases of mandibular ameloblastoma treated by a conservative surgical method].

The Authors describe two cases of jaw adamantinoma which have been treated with preserving surgical operation. The first was a very cyst which has been completely enucleated, after one year since the operation the clinical investigation and screening show a complete healing. The second, equally of cyst shape, has been treated with curettage, after 15 months since the operation it shows no sign of recurrence. The Authors conclude by saying that, while bony resection, is always efficient as surgical therapy of choice in jaw adamantinoma in other particular cases it is right to resort to having a definitive recovery.
