The aim of the present study was to describe some of the oxidative stress parameters in bitches suffering from spontaneously occurring mammary gland tumours. The experiment involved 28 bitches which had mammary gland tumours removed surgically (15 bitches with malignant tumour and 13 with benign tumour) as well as 10 clinically healthy bitches. The activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined in haemolysates of erythrocytes derived from the animals. The concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), as well as -SH groups, were determined in blood plasma. GSH-Px activity was significantly higher in the malignant tumour group than in healthy animals. SOD activity was significantly higher in animals with tumours compared with the control group. Activities of both enzymes were higher in animals with malignant tumours than in benign groups, but the differences were not statistically significant. The concentrations of TBARS and -SH groups were similar in all examined groups. The increase of antioxidative enzyme activities in these animals may suggest the activation of antioxidative defence mechanisms in mammary gland carcinogenesis. Moreover, it might indicate the participation of oxidative stress in malignancies. Further experiments involving more animals, with more frequent sample collection and the use of other oxidative stress markers are necessary.
Conditions of hydrolysis of biological material for determinations of histamine (Hi) using the guinea-pig ileum method were investigated. Overheated vapour has been applied at varying intervals and it was found that optimal conditions for tissue He liberation are obtained after 2 hour hydrolysis in autoclave. Results were compared with the orginal Code's method.

The influence of sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC) on serum lipids in the rabbit. Acta Physiol. Pol., 1979, 30 (2): 327--329. The level of cholesterol, phospholipids and triglycerides in blood serum of rabbits treated with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC) was determined. DDC administration in daily doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, during 4 weeks, resulted in an increase of triglyceride and phospholipid levels changes were found in the serum cholesterol concentration.
The effect of histamine (Hi) on thermal stability of triple helical structure of collagen alone and collagen-chondroitin-6-sulphate complex was studied. Hi increased the thermal stability of collagen and the complex in acidic pH and decreased it in neutral pH.
The effects of histamine-forming capacity (HFC) stimulation by 48/80 as well as of histamine catabolism inhibition by aminoguanidine on the tensile strength and collagen production were studied in wounds of rats. 48/80 raised the level of collagen in wounds and increased their tensile strength. Aminoguanidine increased the histamine content of the wounds but markedly lowered the tensile strength and collagen content.

This paper describes a simple high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method for the determination of diltiazem and desacetyldiltiazem in human serum. After basic methyl-tert-butyl ether extraction and back-extraction with hydrochloric acid, the drug and its metabolite was injected into a Supelcosil LC-CN column and the absorbance of the eluate was measured at 240 nm. The sensitivity was 5 ng/ml and the obtained precision, selectivity and stability during storage were adequate for the performed clinical studies in patients therapeutically treated with diltiazem.
