Lymphocyst: ultrasound diagnosis and urologic management.

Three cases of lymphocysts occurred in a series of 97 patients undergoing extension pelvic urological operations, an incidence rate of 3.1 per cent. This is the first report of this complication after urological lymphadenectomy. Awareness of the entity is important to urologists since lymphatic staging operations for prostate and bladder carcinoma are widely used to help plan definitive therapy. Athough this complication is rare after renal transplantation it may cause significant interference with graft function. The etiology, symptoms, findings, diagnosis and treatment of this condition are reviewed. Echography is presented as an ideal technique to diagnose the condition and to guide in its management.

Compensatory renal hypertrophy in male dwarf mice.

The Snell dwarf mouse (dw/dw) is the result of a single recessive gene that is not sex-linked. The dwarfism is caused by the congenital deficiency of growth hormone, thyrotropin, and prolactin. This unique genetic model was selected to study compensatory renal hypertrophy. Compensatory renal hypertrophy occurred to a significant degree (P less than 0.01) in the unilaterally nephrectomized dwarf mutant (dw/dw), normal heterozygous (dw/DW), and normal homozygous (DW/DW) male littermates. There was no significant difference in the amount of compensatory renal hypertrophy between the groups (P greater than 0.5). These results suggest that three of the anterior pituitary hormones are not necessary for the compensatory hypertrophy response to unilateral nephrectomy.

Operative nephroscopy.

Renal endoscopy has been made possible, practical and safe by technical advances in instrumentation. Operative nephroscopy has become a uniquely valuable adjunct to stone operations, especially for caliceal calculi, but does not permit the surgeon to dispense with operative x-rays. Further, it has extended out horizons in the management of intrarenal hematuria and of low grade tumors of the renal collecting system. We suggest that the rigid right-angled nephroscope in use today be referred to as the Leadbetter nehroscope in recognition of that pioneer's original conception for its design.
