Membrane-bound structures at the interface between tumour and dermis in basal cell carcinoma. An ultrastructural study.

During an ultrastructural study of the interface area between tumour and dermis in 23 basal cell carcinoma (BCC), membrane-bound structures were noted in the dermis adjacent to the basal lamina in 12 tumours (52 per cent), but none of the controls. Serial sectioning demonstrated cytoplasmic connections between these structures and tumour cells. Their formation and interaction with adjacent stromal cells is discussed.

Angiokeratoma corporis diffusum with features of a mucopolysaccharidosis.

Two cases of angiokeratoma corporis diffusum with mental retardation and some features of a mucopolysaccharidosis have been investigated biochemically, histopathologically, and by electron microscopy. It is submitted, on this evidence, that they are examples of a hitherto undescribed form of lysosomal enzyme deficiency disease.

An electron-microscopic study of basal cell carcinoma.

Thirty-two basal cell carcinomas have been examined by electron microscopy. The majority exhibit cellular polymorphism and the most frequently encountered non-epithelial unit is the Langerhans cell. The nature of basal cell carcinoma and the function of the Langerhans cell are discussed in relation to this observation.

Drug effects on the fine structure of Trypanosoma rhodesiense: puromycin and its aminonucleoside, Cordycepin and Nucleocidin.

The effects of four trypanocidal adenine nucleosides on the fine structure of a monomorphic strain of Trypanosoma rhodesiense have been examined. All four drugs, Puromycin and its aminonucleoside, Cordycepin and Nucleocidin, induced electron-lucent cytoplasmic clefts in the cytoplasm, which were generally acicular or spindle-shaped, with long axes lying in any direction. The clefts had an intimate relationship with the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The drugs also produced excessive lysosomal vacuolation, and two, Cordycepin and Nucleocidin, caused nucleolar fragmentation and probable segregation, indicative of interference with RNA synthesis. The significance of the lesions is discussed in relation to known properties of adenine nucleoside drugs.

A search for microtubular inclusions in endothelial cells in a variety of skin diseases.

An electron microscopic study of a variety of skin diseases has demonstrated microtubular 'inclusions' in vascular endothelium in bullous pemphigoid for the first time. The 'inclusions' are similar to those originally reported in lupus erythematosus by Fresco (1968) and presently being detected in an increasing number and variety of pathological processes.

Fine structural evidence for hormone secretion by the human thymus.

The epithelial cells of the Hassall's corpuscles in 11 human thymus glands (nine cases of myasthenia gravis and two glands from patients undergoing surgical correction of congenital heart disease) have been examined by electron microscopy. In every instance the epithelial cells have the cytoplasmic organelle complex necessary for ;export'-type secretory activity and in addition contain large numbers of membrane-limited small spheroidal secretion granules.Hassall's corpuscles are avascular anatomical units and a pericorpuscular zone, at least 50 mum broad, is also without blood vessels. It is therefore suggested that the secretory product(s) of the corpuscular epithelial cells has a purely intrathymic function.
