Role of the T-cell system in glomerulonephritis induced in rats by human serum albumin (HSA). An immunological and morphological study.

The primary role of the T-cell system in immune-complex glomerulonephritis induced by intravenous weekly injections of human serum albumin (HSA) in rats has been demonstrated. The development of histological, ultrastructural and immunological glomerular alterations which are clearly recognizable in intact animals was prevented by neonatal thymectomy. In vitro tests of cellular immunity (LIF and PHA responsiveness) revealed a close relationship between the involvement of functioning T-cell subpopulations (at least T-helper) and the development of the classic glomerulonephritic pattern. In other words HSA antigen recognition by T lymphocytes, their cooperation with B lymphocytes, and the activation of the latter with related antibody response represent the immunological sequence which leads to the formation of the soluble circulating immune-complexes responsible for the glomerular injury. Our findings suggest that the same immunological sequence can represent the pathogenetic basis for many forms of glomerulonephritis in which T-dependent antigen stimulation is demonstrable. Our data are also discussed in the light of results obtained by others in immuneglomerulonephritis induced in nude athymic mice.

[Infective endocarditis with particular references to incorrect diagnosis in elderly subjects: a study of autopsied cases (author's transl)].

20091 autopsies performed in the period 1946-77 yielded 110 cases of infective endocarditis. The anatomical findings were compared with those of published studies on groups of patients of similar age groups. The diagnosis of infective endocarditis was suspected during the life in 40.6% of patients below 50 years of age, in 10.8% over 50 and in none of the patients over 70. Moreover the diagnostic accuracy was down from 36.8% in the 1946-61 period to 23.3% in the 1962-77 period. These negative data are discussed, emphasizing usefulness of autopsy as a systematic check on clinical diagnosis in practical medicine, and especially in geriatric medicine.

[Results of therapy in Hodgkin's disease with special reference to polychemotherapy (MOPP)].

In patients with I and II stage Hodgkin's disease good results have been obtained with radiotherapy alone (complete remission in 100% of cases for 27.5 to 71.5 months; 9 years survival in 86.5%). In stage III combination chemotherapy was used with complete remission in 68.7% (9-31 months) and 4 years survival in 66.9%. In stage IV prognosis was poor in spite of combination chemotherapy and radiotherapy (3 years survival was 11.2% only).

[Cellular immunity in two familial cases of thyroid carcinoma (author's transl)].

Cellular immunity in two brothers with thyroid carcinoma in a family presenting pathological thyroid changes is investigated. In these brothers a low PHA lymphocyte blast-transformation and an elevated number of surface membrane Ig bearing lymphocytes were observed. These data are discussed in relation to the question of immunological defects which frequently are present in carcinoma patients.
