[The lead concentration of the maternal serum in cases of missed abortion].

The neurotoxic effect of lead is well known, but the investigations of the pregnant women are still few. The aim of the present study is to establish whether there is difference in the concentration of lead in the blood of the pregnant women with missed abortion in comparison with women with normally developing pregnancy in the same gestational age. There were examined 35 patients with missed abortion and a control group of 26 women with normal pregnancy in the same gestational age. There were established statistically significant higher levels of lead (p < 0.001) in women with normal pregnancy (124.46 +/- 46.65 micrograms/l) in comparison with cases with missed abortion (183.73 +/- 24.16 micrograms/l). There were discussed the possible mechanisms, which can be responsible for the observed changes.

[The antenatal diagnosis of the sex of the fetus by the cytological determination of sex chromatin].

Forty women between 17 and 23 weeks' gestation were included in the study, whose interruption of pregnancy was performed by medical and social indications. The method of Aburel-Atanasov was used as in 10 ml of the removed amniotic fluid sex chromatin was examined cytologically on cellular smears. Staining and determination of sex chromatin was made by the method of Dokumov. The fetus of male sex, when there was no sex chromatin, but the sex was female, when it was present in various percentage of cells. The genuine sex of the fetus was determined after interruption of pregnancy. Coincidence of cytological and genuine sex of the fetus was found in 36 cases (92.31%), but the sex was determined not exactly in 3 cases (7.69%). There was no sufficient material for preparation of high-grade cytological smears in one case. 14 out of 40 fetuses were of female sex (with sex chromatin in 28.57% of cells on the average) and 25 of male sex. The significance and advantages of the method in comparison with other methods for determination of fetal sex at the same term of pregnancy are discussed.

[Antenatal diagnosis in cases of renal agenesis].

Renal agenesia was established by antenatal ultrasound diagnosis in 3 cases. The ultrasound image is characterized by the impossibility to visualize one or both fetal kidneys, oligohydramnios, lung hypoplasia and hypotrophy of the fetus. The possibilities for the earliest diagnosis as well as for interruption of pregnancy on account of the lethal outcome of the disease in the newborn are discussed.

[Our experience with the antenatal ultrasonic diagnosis of bilateral polycystic kidney disease].

After a brief review on etiology, pathogenesis, frequency, forms and methods for diagnosis, the authors describe their experience in antenatal diagnosis of fetal bilateral multicystic renal disease. Three cases with this disease are reported, diagnosed before delivery with characteristic differential diagnostic criteria. Possibilities for interruption or reaching full-term pregnancy with the described anomalies of the fetus.
