Radioimmunological measurements of prostaglandin F2 alpha, 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-PGF2 alpha (PGFM), estradiol-17 beta, progesterone, prolactin and luteinizing hormone (LH) were carried out in peripheral plasma around parturition in Murrah buffaloes. The PGF2 alpha concentration fluctuated before parturition and a peak was observed 1 day prior to parturition. PGFM, estradiol-17 beta and prolactin concentration increased gradually over the last 7 days with a significant peak (P less than 0.001) 1 day before parturition. The progesterone level declined gradually and an abrupt fall occurred 1-2 days before parturition. The estradiol-17 beta and prolactin concentrations declined to basal concentrations 1-2 days post partum, whereas PGF2 alpha and PGFM remained higher than basal concentrations. The LH concentration remained low without any significant variation. The progesterone concentration was negatively correlated with PGF2 alpha (r = 0.7039; P less than 0.05), PGFM (r = -0.8322; P less than 0.01) and estradiol-17 beta (r = -0.8896; P less than 0.001) before parturition.

Domestic buffaloes were used to characterize the pattern of progesterone, oestradiol-17 beta, LH and androgen in the systemic circulation following infertile insemination. Concentrations of hormones were measured by RIA in blood samples collected daily or at alternate days following insemination. The concentration of progesterone was lowest on the day of insemination, and increased significantly to a peak level of 4.00 +/- 0.60 ng/ml by day 13 post insemination. After day 17, it declined significantly (P less than 0.01) to reach low levels by day 21. The concentration of oestradiol 17-beta was high at the time of insemination and declined significantly (P less than 0.01) by day 2 after insemination. It was maintained around the basal level till day 18 with minor peaks in between this period. It again rose significantly (P less than 0.01) at subsequent oestrus. The mean level of LH was highest at the time of insemination, and declined significantly (P less than 0.01) by day 1 post insemination. It did not vary appreciably till the animal returned to oestrus. The oestrous value of LH and progesterone were negatively correlated (r = -0.77). The androgen level was observed to be high at insemination in 3 out of 5 animals, but the overall pattern of this steroid was inconsistent during the period studied. A high concentration of androgen was recorded in all the animals from day 2--5 before the onset of oestrus.

The authors studied the effect of dopamine beta-hydroxylase inhibition on the manic symptoms of a 34-year-old man. They found that fusaric acid decreased the patient's manic symptoms and that his symptoms approximately reverted to their previous state when a placebo was reinstituted.
Prostaglandin F-2 alpha and cloprostenol were given as an i.m. injection on Days 9 or 15 of the cycle. There was a significant decline (P less than 0.01) in the concentration of protein and activities of acid and alkaline phosphatase and peroxidase in cervical mucus after treatments, and the change was more marked in animals that responded by becoming oestrous within 4 days of treatment. Values in control animals remained steady or increased.
Antibrain antibody titers were determined by hemagglutination technique in sera and cerebrospinal fluid of 54 schizophrenic patients and 27 nonschizophrenic controls. Antibrain antibodies were detected in sera and CSF of 26 (48.1%) schizophrenics but in none of the controls. They were significantly more often present in those schizophrenics who had a past history (p less than 0.01) and family history (p less than 0.01) of schizophrenia. They had no significant relationship with the subtype and the duration of schizophrenia. The possible genetic and immunological implications of these findings are discussed.
Concentration of progesterone in whole milk was used to diagnose pregnancy in 44 lactating buffaloes. Milk samples were taken from days 19 to 27 post breeding and analysed for progesterone by radio-immunoassay. A level exceeding 10 ng/ml of milk was taken as an indication of pregnancy. Using this criterion, the accuracy of the pregnancy test from a single milk sample on 19, 21, 23, 25 and 27 days after insemination ranged from 71.42 to 86.95% and 86 to 87.50% for pregnant and non-pregnant animals, respectively. Milk progesterone concentrations were significantly higher (P / 0.001) in pregnant compared with those in non-pregnant buffaloes on day 19, 21, 23, 25 and 27 post-insemination.
