Searching for interpretable rules for disease mutations: a simulated annealing bump hunting strategy.

BACKGROUND: Understanding how amino acid substitutions affect protein functions is critical for the study of proteins and their implications in diseases. Although methods have been developed for predicting potential effects of amino acid substitutions using sequence, three-dimensional structural, and evolutionary properties of proteins, the applications are limited by the complication of the features and the availability of protein structural information. Another limitation is that the prediction results are hard to be interpreted with physicochemical principles and biological knowledge. RESULTS: To overcome these limitations, we proposed a novel feature set using physicochemical properties of amino acids, evolutionary profiles of proteins, and protein sequence information. We applied the support vector machine and the random forest with the feature set to experimental amino acid substitutions occurring in the E. coli lac repressor and the bacteriophage T4 lysozyme, as well as to annotated amino acid substitutions occurring in a wide range of human proteins. The results showed that the proposed feature set was superior to the existing ones. To explore physicochemical principles behind amino acid substitutions, we designed a simulated annealing bump hunting strategy to automatically extract interpretable rules for amino acid substitutions. We applied the strategy to annotated human amino acid substitutions and successfully extracted several rules which were either consistent with current biological knowledge or providing new insights for the understanding of amino acid substitutions. When applied to unclassified data, these rules could cover a large portion of samples, and most of the covered samples showed good agreement with predictions made by either the support vector machine or the random forest. CONCLUSION: The prediction methods using the proposed feature set can achieve larger AUC (the area under the ROC curve), smaller BER (the balanced error rate), and larger MCC (the Matthews' correlation coefficient) than those using the published feature sets, suggesting that our feature set is superior to the existing ones. The rules extracted by the simulated annealing bump hunting strategy have comparable coverage and accuracy but much better interpretability as those extracted by the patient rule induction method (PRIM), revealing that the strategy is more effective in inducing interpretable rules.

Medial double-plating for fracture dislocations involving the proximal tibia.

Fracture dislocations of the knee involving the proximal tibia are difficult to treat because of the operative approach that maybe required and the instability of the construct. This paper evaluates the use of a two-incision approach with a medial double-plating technique. The clinical results of a case series of 42 patients collected prospectively are presented. At final follow-up 37 out of 42 (88%) had satisfactory reduction of the articular surface and 41 (98%) had satisfactory alignment. At one year postoperation there was no loss in reduction or alignment. The mean HSS score was 90.9 (s.d. 3.35, range 83 to 97). There were no superficial or deep infections, however four cases (10%) had a sanguinous effusion for more than one week postoperatively. It was concluded that the medial double-plating operation is an effective way of managing fracture dislocations involving the proximal tibia.

Network motif identification in stochastic networks.

Network motifs have been identified in a wide range of networks across many scientific disciplines and are suggested to be the basic building blocks of most complex networks. Nonetheless, many networks come with intrinsic and/or experimental uncertainties and should be treated as stochastic networks. The building blocks in these networks thus may also have stochastic properties. In this article, we study stochastic network motifs derived from families of mutually similar but not necessarily identical patterns of interconnections. We establish a finite mixture model for stochastic networks and develop an expectation-maximization algorithm for identifying stochastic network motifs. We apply this approach to the transcriptional regulatory networks of Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, as well as the protein-protein interaction networks of seven species, and identify several stochastic network motifs that are consistent with current biological knowledge.

Comparison of bioelectrical impedance and BMI in predicting obesity-related medical conditions.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relative validity of specific bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) prediction equations and BMI as predictors of physiologically relevant general adiposity. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Subjects were >12,000 men and women from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey population. We examined the correlations between BMI and percentage body fat based on 51 different predictive equations, blood pressure, and blood levels of glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides, which are known to reflect adiposity, while controlling for other determinants of these physiological measures. RESULTS: BMI consistently had one of the highest correlations across biological markers, and no BIA-based measure was superior. Percent body fat estimated from BIA was minimally predictive of the physiological markers independent of BMI. DISCUSSION: These results suggest that BIA is not superior to BMI as a predictor of overall adiposity in a general population.

Dietary patterns are associated with biochemical markers of inflammation and endothelial activation in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).

BACKGROUND: Dietary patterns may influence cardiovascular disease risk through effects on inflammation and endothelial activation. OBJECTIVE: We examined relations between dietary patterns and markers of inflammation and endothelial activation. DESIGN: At baseline, diet (food-frequency questionnaire) and concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin 6 (IL-6), homocysteine, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), and soluble E selectin were assessed in 5089 nondiabetic participants in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis. RESULTS: Four dietary patterns were derived by using factor analysis. The fats and processed meats pattern (fats, oils, processed meats, fried potatoes, salty snacks, and desserts) was positively associated with CRP (P for trend < 0.001), IL-6 (P for trend < 0.001), and homocysteine (P for trend = 0.002). The beans, tomatoes, and refined grains pattern (beans, tomatoes, refined grains, and high-fat dairy products) was positively related to sICAM-1 (P for trend = 0.007). In contrast, the whole grains and fruit pattern (whole grains, fruit, nuts, and green leafy vegetables) was inversely associated with CRP, IL-6, homocysteine (P for trend < or = 0.001), and sICAM-1 (P for trend = 0.034), and the vegetables and fish pattern (fish and dark-yellow, cruciferous, and other vegetables) was inversely related to IL-6 (P for trend = 0.009). CRP, IL-6, and homocysteine relations across the fats and processed meats and whole grains and fruit patterns were independent of demographics and lifestyle factors and were not modified by race-ethnicity. CRP and homocysteine relations were independent of waist circumference. CONCLUSIONS: These results corroborate previous findings that empirically derived dietary patterns are associated with inflammation and show that these relations in an ethnically diverse population with unique dietary habits are similar to findings in more homogeneous populations.

Ethnicity, obesity, and risk of type 2 diabetes in women: a 20-year follow-up study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine ethnic differences in risk of type 2 diabetes, taking dietary and lifestyle risk factors into account. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A prospective (1980-2000) cohort (from The Nurses' Health Study) including 78,419 apparently healthy women (75,584 whites, 801 Asians, 613 Hispanics, and 1,421 blacks) was studied. Detailed dietary and lifestyle information for each participant was repeatedly collected every 4 years. RESULTS: During 1,294,799 person-years of follow-up, we documented 3,844 incident cases of diabetes. Compared with whites, the age-adjusted relative risks (RRs) were 1.43 (95% CI 1.08-1.90) for Asians, 1.76 (1.32-2.34) for Hispanics, and 2.18 (1.82-2.61) for blacks. After adjustment for BMI, the RRs changed to 2.26 (1.70-2.99) for Asians, 1.86 (1.40-2.47) for Hispanics, and 1.34 (1.12-1.61) for blacks. For each 5-unit increment in BMI, the multivariate RR of diabetes was 2.36 (1.83-3.04) for Asians, 2.21 (1.75-2.79) for Hispanics, 1.96 (1.93-2.00) for whites, and 1.55 (1.36-1.77) for blacks (P for interaction <0.001). For each 5-kg weight gain between age 18 and the year 1980, the risk of diabetes was increased by 84% (95% CI 58-114) for Asians, 44% (26-63) for Hispanics, 38% (28-49) for blacks, and 37% (35-38%) for whites. A healthy diet high in cereal fiber and polyunsaturated fat and low in trans fat and glycemic load was more strongly associated with a lower risk of diabetes among minorities (RR 0.54 [95% CI 0.39-0.73]) than among whites (0.77 [0.72-0.84]). CONCLUSIONS: The risk of diabetes is significantly higher among Asians, Hispanics, and blacks than among whites before and after taking into account differences in BMI. Weight gain is particularly detrimental for Asians. Our data suggest that the inverse association of a healthy diet with diabetes is stronger for minorities than for whites.

[Testicular tumor in Mongolian men (report of 35 cases)].

OBJECTIVE: To improve the diagnosis, therapy and prognosis of testicular tumor in Mongolian men. METHODS: A retrospective review of 35 cases of testicular tumors in Mongolian men from seven medical centers dated from 1990 to 2004 was performed. RESULTS: The usual presentation of a testicular tumor was a nodular or painless swelling of one gonad. The mean delay in diagnosis was 40.03 +/- 53.45 weeks. For 16 patients, delay in diagnosis was more than or equal to six months. The histologic composition of this series was 21 (60%) seminoma, 10 (28.6%) nonseminoma, 2 (5.7%) lymphoma, 1 (2.35%) fibroneuroma and 1 (2.35%) leiomyoma. Regarding stage, 22, 2, and 5 of 29 germ cell tumors were seen initially as stage I, II, and III, respectively. Combined therapy, including radical orchiectomy, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, were taken. 29 cases have been followed for 2 months to 10 years, 4 out of them died of distant metastasis, one died of other disease, one lives with tumor, the others live without relapse and metastasis. Three and 5-year survival rates for Mongolian patients with seminoma and nonseminoma were 95.0%, 95.0%, 57.1% and 42.8%, respectively. CONCLUSION: In this article, the rate of seminoma to germ cell tumors is higher than that of general population. There is an increased mean delay in diagnosis for Mongolian patients. Three and 5-year survival rates for nonseminoma are lower than that for seminoma. Better public awareness regarding testicular tumor in this population, advances in diagnosis and therapy will help to improve therapeutic effectiveness and prognosis.

[Changes of gap junction in penile cavernous smooth muscle cells of hypertensive rats].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the changes of the intercellular conjunction in penile cavernous tissues between spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive ones, and to study the relation of blood pressure with erectile function. METHODS: After apomorphine (APO) injection, we observed penile erections in SHR (SHR group, n=5) and Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY group, n=5), studied the ultrastructure of the cell-to-cell conjunction between the penile cavernous smooth muscle cells with a transmission electrical microscope, and examined the expression of mRNA and Connexin 43 protein by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The erectile frequency in the SHR group was significantly lower than in the WKY group. The smooth muscle cells were decreased and the collagen fibers between the smooth muscle cells were increased in the SHR group. The expression of mRNA and Connexin 43 protein in the cavernous tissues was significantly lower in the SHR group than in the WKY group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Hypertension affects penile erection, and the pathological changes of the cell-to-cell conjunction between the penile cavernous smooth muscle cells may be one of the important mechanisms of erectile dysfunction associated with hypertension.

Nut and seed consumption and inflammatory markers in the multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis.

Nuts and seeds are rich in unsaturated fat and other nutrients that may reduce inflammation. Frequent nut consumption is associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The authors examined associations between nut and seed consumption and C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, and fibrinogen in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis. This 2000 cross-sectional analysis included 6,080 US participants aged 45-84 years with adequate information on diet and biomarkers. Nut and seed consumption was categorized as never/rare, less than once/week, 1-4 times/week, and five or more times/week. After adjustment for age, gender, race/ethnicity, site, education, income, smoking, physical activity, use of fish oil supplements, and other dietary factors, mean biomarker levels in categories of increasing consumption were as follows: C-reactive protein-1.98, 1.97, 1.80, and 1.72 mg/liter; interleukin-6-1.25, 1.24, 1.21, and 1.15 pg/ml; and fibrinogen-343, 338, 338, and 331 mg/dl (all p's for trend < 0.01). Further adjustment for hypertension, diabetes, medication use, and lipid levels yielded similar results. Additional adjustment for body mass index moderately attenuated the magnitude of the associations, yielding borderline statistical significance. Associations of nut and seed consumption with these biomarkers were not modified by body mass index, waist:hip ratio, or race/ethnicity. Frequent nut and seed consumption was associated with lower levels of inflammatory markers, which may partially explain the inverse association of nut consumption with cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk.

Toward an improvement over Kerner-Klenov-Wolf three-phase cellular automaton model.

The Kerner-Klenov-Wolf (KKW) three-phase cellular automaton model has a nonrealistic velocity of the upstream front in widening synchronized flow pattern which separates synchronized flow downstream and free flow upstream. This paper presents an improved model, which is a combination of the initial KKW model and a modified Nagel-Schreckenberg (MNS) model. In the improved KKW model, a parameter is introduced to determine the vehicle moves according to the MNS model or the initial KKW model. The improved KKW model can not only simulate the empirical observations as the initial KKW model, but also overcome the nonrealistic velocity problem. The mechanism of the improvement is discussed.

[Valve-sparing aortic root replacement in patients with aortic root disease].

OBJECTIVE: To review the results of the valve-sparing operation (David procedure) in patients with aortic root disease. METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with aortic root disease, 20 males and 9 females, aged 39 +/- 17 (10-64), 10 being of heart functional class I, 15 of class II, and 4 of class III, and 15 with gentle, 9 with moderate, and 5 with severe aortic insufficiency underwent David procedure, one undergoing the aortic valve-sparing reimplantation (David I), 25 undergoing aortic valve-sparing remodeling (David II), and 3 undergoing a new modified aortic valve-sparing operation. After the operation the patients were followed up for 29 +/- 15 months (5-74 months). RESULTS: No intra-operative death was found. The mean extracorporeal circulation time was 126 min +/- 25 min, and the aortic crossclamp time was 87 min +/- 22 min. All patients recovered to heart functional class I. Post-operatively 11 patients showed no normal, eight gently and two moderate aortic regurgitation. CONCLUSION: The valve-sparing operation is an ideal operation to the aortic root aneurysm with more or less normal aortic leaflets and valvular ring normal.

Analytical investigation of oscillations in intersecting flows of pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

In two intersecting many-particle streams, one can often find the emergence of oscillatory patterns. Here, we investigate the interaction of pedestrians with vehicles, when they try to cross a road. A numerical study of this coupled pedestrian-vehicle delay problem has been presented in a previous paper. Here, we focus on the analytical treatment of the problem, which requires us to use a simplified car-following model. Our analytical results for the transition to oscillatory pedestrian and traffic flows and the average waiting times are well supported by numerical evaluations and give a detailed picture of the collective dynamics emerging when pedestrians try to cross a road. The mathematical expressions allow one to identify the dependence on model parameters such as the vehicle or pedestrian arrival rate, and the safety factor of pedestrian gap acceptance. We also calculate a formula for the vehicle time gap distribution, which corresponds to the departure time contribution of a M/D/1 queue characterized by Poissonian distributed Markovian arrivals, 1 service channel, and deterministic departures.

Fruit and vegetable intake and risk of major chronic disease.

BACKGROUND: Studies of fruit and vegetable consumption in relation to overall health are limited. We evaluated the relationship between fruit and vegetable intake and the incidence of cardiovascular disease and cancer and of deaths from other causes in two prospective cohorts. METHODS: A total of 71 910 female participants in the Nurses' Health study and 37,725 male participants in the Health Professionals' Follow-up Study who were free of major chronic disease completed baseline semiquantitative food-frequency questionnaires in 1984 and 1986, respectively. Dietary information was updated in 1986, 1990, and 1994 for women and in 1990 and 1994 for men. Participants were followed up for incidence of cardiovascular disease, cancer, or death through May 1998 (women) and January 1998 (men). Multivariable-adjusted relative risks were calculated with Cox proportional hazards analysis. RESULTS: We ascertained 9329 events (1964 cardiovascular, 6584 cancer, and 781 other deaths) in women and 4957 events (1670 cardiovascular diseases, 2500 cancers, and 787 other deaths) in men during follow-up. For men and women combined, participants in the highest quintile of total fruit and vegetable intake had a relative risk for major chronic disease of 0.95 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.89 to 1.01) times that of those in the lowest. Total fruit and vegetable intake was inversely associated with risk of cardiovascular disease but not with overall cancer incidence, with relative risk for an increment of five servings daily of 0.88 (95% CI = 0.81 to 0.95) for cardiovascular disease and 1.00 (95% CI = 0.95 to 1.05) for cancer. Of the food groups analyzed, green leafy vegetable intake showed the strongest inverse association with major chronic disease and cardiovascular disease. For an increment of one serving per day of green leafy vegetables, relative risks were 0.95 (95% CI = 0.92 to 0.99) for major chronic disease and 0.89 (95% CI = 0.83 to 0.96) for cardiovascular disease. CONCLUSIONS: Increased fruit and vegetable consumption was associated with a modest although not statistically significant reduction in the development of major chronic disease. The benefits appeared to be primarily for cardiovascular disease and not for cancer.

[Pediatric renal transplantation: clinical analysis of 23 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical characters and the therapeutic experience of pediatric kidney transplantation. METHODS: Clinical data of 23 pediatric renal transplant recipients (less than 18 years, 14 boys, 9 girls) were analyzed. Recipients were 11 - 17 (mean 15.4 +/- 1.0 years) years old at transplantation. The kidneys were transplanted en bloc extraperitoneally into the recipient's iliac fossa, with the donor renal vein anastomosed to the recipient's external iliac vein. Among 23 transplant procedures, the donor renal artery was anastomosed to the external iliac artery in 14 cases, to the internal iliac artery in 4 cases and to the common iliac artery in 3. The other two allografts were unusual. All the patients were treated with cyclosporine or tacrolimus based immunosuppression, including steroid and azathioprine or mycophenolate mofetil. The initial dose of cyclosporine was 6 - 7 mg per kilogram of body weight per day and that of tacrolimus was 0.15 - 0.20 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. The data of the recovery of renal function, rejection episodes, incidences of side effect and related complication were analyzed respectively. RESULTS: The transplantation operations were performed uneventful in all the 23 recipients. There were no graft losses for technical reasons. The single graft failure was the result from bad compliance. The renal function was improved 5.5 days in average after transplantation in 22 cases. Main complications were arterial hypertension (57%), pulmonary infection (13%), drug-induced hepatic injury (13%) and bone marrow suppression (13%). Acute rejection occurred in 4 persons 1 year post-operatively (17%). The body weight of the recipients increased 2.3 kg in average and height increased 1.0 cm after the first post-operative year. The mean duration for follow-up was 42 month. One-year patient/graft survival rate was 100%/96% and three-year patient/graft survival rate was 90%/80%. CONCLUSION: Kidney transplantation is the preferred treatment for end stage renal failure in children patient. The well procedure, reasonable immunosuppressive regime, prevention and prompt therapy of complication are the keys to get satisfactory survival rate of human/kidney.

Traffic behavior near an off ramp in the cellular automaton traffic model.

In this paper, we investigate the off-ramp system on the highway using the cellular automaton traffic model. Both the system without an exit lane (case 1) and that with an exit lane (case 2) are considered. The phase diagram and its variation with L(D) (the length of exit lane in case 2 and the length of a special lane-changing section in case 1) is studied. Two phase regions are found in case 1 and a new phase, i.e., the maximum flux phase, is reported in case 2. The density (velocity) distribution near the off ramp and the influence of L(D) on the traffic flow are also discussed in both cases.

Body iron stores in relation to risk of type 2 diabetes in apparently healthy women.

CONTEXT: Type 2 diabetes is a common manifestation of hemochromatosis, a disease of iron overload. However, it is not clear whether higher iron stores predict the development of type 2 diabetes in a healthy population. OBJECTIVE: To examine plasma ferritin concentration and the ratio of the concentrations of transferrin receptors to ferritin in relation to risk of type 2 diabetes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Prospective nested case-control study within the Nurses' Health Study cohort. Of the 32 826 women who provided blood samples during 1989-1990 and were free of diagnosed diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, 698 developed diabetes during 10 years of follow-up. The controls (n = 716) were matched to cases on age, race, and fasting status; and on body mass index (BMI) for cases in the top BMI decile. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Incident cases of type 2 diabetes. RESULTS: Among cases, the mean (SD) concentration of ferritin was significantly higher (109 [105] vs 71.5 [68.7] ng/mL for controls; P<.001 for difference) and the mean (SD) ratio of transferrin receptors to ferritin was significantly lower (102 [205] vs 141 [340], respectively; P =.01). In conditional logistic regression stratified on the matching factors and controlled for BMI and other diabetes risk factors, the multivariate relative risks [RRs] of incident type 2 diabetes across increasing quintiles of ferritin were 1.00, 1.09 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.70-1.70), 1.26 (95% CI, 0.82-1.95), 1.30 (95% CI, 0.83-2.04), and 2.68 (95% CI, 1.75-4.11) (P<.001 for trend). The RRs across increasing quintiles of transferrin receptors to ferritin ratio were 2.44 (95% CI, 1.61-3.71), 1.00 (95% CI, 0.64-1.56), 1.13 (95% CI, 0.73-1.74), 0.99 (95% CI, 0.64-1.53), and 1.00 (P =.01 for trend). Further adjustment for an inflammatory marker (C-reactive protein) did not change the results appreciably. The associations persisted within strata defined by levels of BMI, menopausal status, alcohol consumption, and C-reactive protein. CONCLUSION: Higher iron stores (reflected by an elevated ferritin concentration and a lower ratio of transferrin receptors to ferritin) are associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in healthy women independent of known diabetes risk factors.

Dietary iron intake and blood donations in relation to risk of type 2 diabetes in men: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Excessive iron stores may promote insulin resistance and lead to the development of type 2 diabetes. However, prospective data relating iron intake and blood donations (determinants of body iron stores) to diabetes incidence are limited. OBJECTIVE: We examined iron intake and blood donations in relation to the incidence of type 2 diabetes. DESIGN: We followed men aged 40-75 y who participated in the Health Professionals' Follow-up Study; were free of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer in 1986; and provided dietary data (n = 38 394). Of those participants, 33 541 also provided a history of blood donation during the past 30 y in 1992. RESULTS: During 12 y of follow-up, we ascertained 1168 new cases of type 2 diabetes. After adjustment for age, body mass index, and other diabetes risk factors, total iron intake was not associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes. Intakes of total heme iron [multivariate relative risk (RR) for extreme quintiles: 1.28; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.61; P for trend = 0.045] and of heme iron from red meat (RR: 1.63; 1.26, 2.10; P for trend < 0.001) were associated with an increased risk. However, heme-iron intake from sources other than red meat was not associated with diabetes risk (RR: 0.99; 0.81, 1.22). No significant associations were found between blood donation and the risk of type 2 diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: Heme-iron intake from red meat sources is positively associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes. Total iron intake, heme-iron intake from non-red meat sources, and blood donations are not related to the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Non-HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein B predict cardiovascular disease events among men with type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of non-HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein (apo)B, markers of all potentially atherogenic lipoproteins, as predictors of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in comparison with LDL cholesterol in patients with type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We prospectively followed 746 diabetic men in the Health Professionals' Follow-up Study who were aged 46-81 years and free of CVD or cancer at the time of blood draw in 1993-1994. During 6 years of follow-up, we ascertained 103 incident CVD cases. RESULTS: We used Cox proportional hazard modeling to estimate the relative risk (RR) of CVD. After adjustment for age, BMI, and other lifestyle risk factors, the multivariate RR of CVD (the highest versus the lowest quartile) was 2.34 (95% CI 1.26-4.32) for non-HDL cholesterol, 2.31 (1.23-4.35) for apoB, and 1.74 (0.99-3.06) for LDL cholesterol. Comparisons of nested models indicate that non-HDL cholesterol, but not apoB, adds significantly to the prediction of CVD risk beyond LDL cholesterol. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.685, 0.691, 0.695, and 0.722 for the CVD risk-prediction model with LDL cholesterol, apoB, non-HDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol-to-HDL cholesterol ratio (or the non-HDL-to-HDL cholesterol ratio), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Non-HDL cholesterol and apoB are more potent predictors of CVD incidence among diabetic men than LDL cholesterol. Statistically, the ratio of total to HDL cholesterol is the best predictor of CVD in this cohort of diabetic men.
