[Hemodynamics and gas exchange in experimental pulmonary microembolism].

Parameters of hemodynamics and gas exchange were studied in experiments in 25 dogs having experimental microembolism of the lungs. Microembolism was found to result in an abrupt increase of the pulmonary arterial pressure and resistance of lungs, stable hypoxemia with phenomena of metabolic acidosis, incrsed intrapulmonary shunting and the ventilation/perfusion ratio. The mechanisms of hemodynamic and respiratory rearrangement are discussed.

[Participation of the lungs in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism].

The utilization of glucose, NFA, triglycerides, cholesterol and alpha-lipoprotein cholesterol as well as the production of lactic acid were studied at different pH levels on the model of isolated lungs of the dog perfused in a special chamber maintaining the conditions close to physiological. The data obtained may be used for the assessment of lung metabolism under these conditions.

[Evaluation of the amount of microaggregates in preserved blood].

The tensometric method of the estimation of microaggregates in the blood and its preparations was used. It was shown that the process of aggregation of blood formed elements was dependent on the preservative content, period of storage and individual features of the donor. The filtration rate of the soviet and foreign microfilters was found to depend upon the initial content of microaggregates in the blood. The employed tensometric method is sufficiently simple and enables the objective estimation of the amount of microaggregates to be made. It is recommended for employment in the blood transfusion service.

[Changes in vascular permeability and lymph outflow during blood transfusions: experimental study].

Experiments on mongrel dogs showed that after transfusion of citrated blood the lymph flow in the thoracic and right lymphatic ducts increased. Greater vascular permiability and accumulation of fluid in the lungs were also noted. The degree of these phenomena was dependent on the time of storage of the transfused blood and on getting thrombo-leukocytic microaggregates into the vascular bed. The question of possible sequellae of hemotransfusions in patients with the incompetent lymphatic system is discussed.

Pulmonary vascular responses to inhalation anaesthesia in isolated dog lungs.

To study the mechanisms of action of four inhalation anaesthetics (diethyl ether, halothane, methoxyflurane, and nitrogen monoxide) upon the pulmonary circulation, the authors carried out 45 experiments in isolated, perfused and ventilated canine lungs. The effects of the anaesthetics were studied at 1) normotonic perfusion, 2) enhanced pulmonary blood flow, 3) microembolism-induced pulmonary hypertension. In the first two-experimental series, no effects of the test anaesthetics on the pulmonary vascular responses became manifest; at microembolism-induced pulmonary hypertension, halothane lowered the pulmonary vascular resistance, whereas diethyl ether stabilized the elevated vascular tone. Methoxyflurane and nitrogen monoxide had no marked effects on the pulmonary vascular responses. On the basis of their experiences and of data published in the literature the authors conclude that there exist regional mechanisms of action of anaesthetics on the lung vessels, activated by the release or action of mediators.

[Use of a membrane oxygenator for correcting acute, experimental respiratory insufficiency].

A model of acute respiratory insufficiency ARI was created in the experiments on 16 dogs by means of a valvular device furnishing a free inhalation and a limited expiration. The diaphragmatic oxigenator devised in VNIIP with an armoured diaphragm of "Sigma"--type was switched on at the height of ARI. 3 hours' perfusion corrected successfully the manifestation of hypercapnic hypoxia. The pulmonary function restored after the experiment.
