The infrared stretch vibrations (upsilonCO) of the CO-complexes of cytochrome P-450 and cytochrome P-420 have been determined from infrared difference spectra. The CO-complexes exhibit IR-bands at 1949 cm-1 and 1966 cm-1 with half widths of approximately 17 cm-1 and approximately 20 cm-1 respectively. These results are compared with the CO-stretch frequencies of other haemoproteins and discussed with respect to specific interactions of the CO-ligand with the protein moiety and to the ligand trans to CO of the cytochromes.

Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RTS) is a dominant Mendelian disorder characterised by mental retardation, a typical facies, broad thumbs and short stature. Previous reports indicated that 4-25% of RTS patients have a submicroscopic 16p13.3 deletion of the CBP gene. Using FISH and cosmid probes RT100, RT191 and RT203 we studied 45 RTS patients from Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria and Turkey and found four deletions (8.9%, pooled data including other studies: 11%). All deletions were interstitial; three spanned the CBP gene (RT100-RT203) and one was smaller (RT100 only). Previous studies reported no phenotype-genotype correlation between RTS patients with or without a deletion. Our findings suggest a more severe phenotype. The mean age at presentation was 0.96 years in patients with a deletion as against 11.12 years in those without. Patients A and B with a deletion died in infancy which is rare in RTS and was not observed among the other patients. Patients A and D had accessory spleens, Patient A with hypoplastic left heart, abnormal pulmonary lobulation and renal agenesis. This is the second report of hypoplastic left heart and the first report of polysplenia with RTS. The signs suggest a developmental field defect (disturbance of laterality) either as a newly recognised pattern of RTS, or alternatively a novel contiguous gene syndrome.
105 patients with 137 total knee replacements (105 model GSB, 32 model ES) were reexamined 4.3 years (2 to 9.7 years) postoperatively. 63.9 percent suffered from chronic polyarthritis. The clinical result (Insall 100-point score) averaged 73.6 points (78.2 ES-, 71.7 GSB II-knees). In 28.6 percent of the GSB- and 3.1 percent of the ES-knees osteolyses of the patella were apparent. Subluxation or complete dislocation of the patella was present in 85.7 percent of the GSB- and 25 percent of the ES-knees. The result was dependent on the preoperative knee axis, patellar height and the implant site of the tibial component. Revisions with complete removal of the inlay were most successful.
A limiting factor in using microporous capillary membrane oxygenators (CMO) for long-term extracorporeal lung support is leakage. Application of heparin-coated CMO requires additional examination because leakage is probably caused by the temperature conditions of the gas, the blood and the circuit environment, and the surface tension phenomenon at the micropores. The authors designed a thermostatized box in which the temperature of flowing gas (Tg) and blood (Tb), and the interior temperature of the box (Ti) could be regulated independently. Tb was adjusted to the animal's body temperature, and Tg was kept about 2 degrees C higher to prevent condensation of the evaporated fluid from the blood side, through the micropores, into the gas phase. Ti was maintained between Tg and Tb. The saturated outlet gas could therefore condense only outside the box. This system was used during 5 days of venovenous bypass using a covalently heparin-bonded (Carmeda) CMO (Maxima, Medtronic) in four adult sheep. No plasma leakage occurred, the surface tension of condensate water remained constant, and the gas exchange capacity of CMO was unchanged.
This contribution discusses some theoretical aspects related to the question of whether, and in what way, a uniform social security target has been defined for the monetary old-age protection in the Federal Republic of Germany, and to what extent different pension schemes fulfill this target. The analysis leads to the conclusion that only a "target range", and not a defined value, has been developed for the indicator "individual replacement rate". The investigation into the effects of old-age pension schemes on income shows that, even after benefit cuts, public sector employees, on the whole, are better protected than employees in the private sector. A future, detailed empirical analysis would have to investigate individual social groups.

In the years 1971-76 we have treated 243 stage Ib cancers of the cervix. 104 (45.9%) were submitted to a radical surgery in the form of a classical Wertheim-Meigs operation in 32 of them, whilst in the other 72 lymphadenectomy was extended to the lumbar-aortic chains. When feasible, all the operated cases were submitted to a postoperative radiumtherapy on the vaginal vault and to external irradiation if N+ at histological examination. 114 cases (46.9%) were submitted to a complete course of radiotherapy. The remaining 25 cases (10.3%) were submitted to a preoperative radiumtherapy plus radical surgery. The 5-year NED survival was 89.5% in the surgical group, 93.0% in the radiotherapy group and 91.1% for the patients submitted to a preoperative radiumtherapy. In the time interval considered the stage II cases were 89. 14 (15.7%) were operated upon, 66 (74.2%) were treated with a complete course of radiotherapy and 9 (10.1%) were submitted to a preoperative radiumtherapy plus radical surgery. The 5-year NED survival was respectively 83.8%, 67.1% (only for proximal-stage II cases) and 100.0%. Radiotherapy is equivalent to surgery for the treatment of the stage Ib cervical cancers. On the contrary several arguments claim a combined therapeutic approach in the treatment of the stage II cases.
