Serum alpha-fetoprotein assay in normal pregnant women. Perspectives of clinical use for purposes of diagnosis and prognosis.

Radioimmunological assay of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) has been performed in the serum of normal women at various stages of pregnancy and at the time of parturition; a total of 208 assay was carried out, AFP values rose until the 33rd week and at the time of childbirth dropped to levels about half of the maximum reached. No correlations were found between AFP values, neonatal weight and parity while the sex of the fetus appearech to have some influence. It is to be hoped that the application of these potential uses can be envisaged in the near future.

Morphometric studies in triacetyloleandomycin-induced ultrastructural modifications of rat hepatocyte mitochondria.

Morphometric parameters of mitochondria such as volumetric density, surface density of envelopes and cristae and numerical density were calculated for control untreated and triacetyloleandomycin (TAO)-treated rat hepatocytes using a point-counting technique. Moreover, morphometric parameters calculated experimentally and those computed on the basis of the least square interpolation and the agreement with the chi2 test, were compared. The equations modelling each main morphometric parameter of experimental motochondria were also computed. Morphometric study revealed that TAO produces a highly reproducible pattern of morphological alterations in the mitochondrial population of rat hepatocytes, and a good agreement between experimental and theoretical data was found. The response of hepatocyte mitochondria to TAO may be modelled by parabolic functions described by equations of the second degree. During the whole experimental period, the number of mitochondria decreases, but the specific volume of mitochondria increases. The area of the cristae surface per mitochondrion does not change substantially during the whole experimental period but since the quantity of internal mitochondrial membranes per hepatocyte is less in the later experimental period than in control material, it can be assumed that the oxidizing capacity per hepatocyte has diminished. The morphometric model based on TAO-treated hepatocyte mitochondria is different from those so far described in the literature for rat liver.

A rare case of ante partum fetal death due to funicular pathology.

The authors describe a case of ante partum fetal death due to a true funicular knot combined with relative shortness of the cord as a results of a double nuchal coil. Separately, these complications are common occurrences and do not lead to fetal pathology except during labor. If, however, they are combined they may be responsible, as in the case described above, for ante partum fetal death as a result of vascular strangulation during sudden changes in the fetal position. The possibilities of diagnosing funicular complications are discussed but these are not apt to avoid the rare cases of sudden fetal death as a result of vascular occlusion in the ante partum period.
