The h.i.a. titer has been determined against the strain of the A/Port Chalmers/1/73 influenza virus in 805 serum samples obtained in Rome from as many adults during six distinct periods between spring 1962 and summer-autumn 1974.

Owing to the very frequent reports of Legionella's cases arising in italian hospitals we have done a microbiologic monitoring on some equipments utilized in a several ward, what represent a potential source of diffusion of germ. It has been analysed water collected from 135 bubblers for oxygen-therapy, 11 pediatric incubators and 10 dental chairs. The isolated strains ware 31 (19.23%), of which: 3 L. Pneumophila sgr. 1; 11 sgr. 3; 8 sgr. 6; 2 sgr. 7. For 6 strains identified as Legionella, have not been possible to establish sgr.
An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique as an aid to the detection of antibodies to Entamoeba histolytica has been evaluated in four groups of 39 individuals. Results were positive in 15 patients with amoebic dysentery harboring trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica, in their stools; negative in 6 patients with enteric symptoms whose faeces contained neither trophozoites nor cysts of Entamoeba histolytica, in 8 patients with other parasitic diseases in whom clinical examination was not indicative of infection with Entamoeba histolytica, and in 10 sera from blood-donors. The ELISA has been shown to be a sensitive method of detecting antibodies to entamoeba histolytica.
In these last years it was observed an increased frequency of human infections by Y. enterocolitica supported mostly in Europe by serotype 0:3 and 0:9, and by serotype 0:8 in U.S.A. As far as it is concerned the transmission form to man, in addition to the possible infection between men, the one from animal to man and the one consequent on water use, most important suspicions are about foods derived from infected animals or however contaminated by man (fresh or preserved or processed meat, milk and its products; the produce of sea). Y. enterocolitica was isolated from all the animals for slaughter (especially from the swine's pharynx and excrement, where pathogenic serotypes for man were isolated), this ascertainment has led the Authors to research the microorganism in foods of animal kind. It is a facultative anaerobe and this characteristic allows it to survive and multiply also in packed products kept in the refrigerator. For this reason the A.A. carry out a research of Y. enterocolitica on 484 samples of fresh meats and sausages as follows: beef (150 samples), superficial scratching of ox's skeleton (150 samples), minced meat (20 samples), sausages (164 samples). Sausages and beef were bought in some butcher's shops, the other samples were drawn from slaughter-houses of Messina province. The results have pointed out that none of the analysed samples is found contaminated by these microorganisms.
Indirect immunoperoxidase (IP) method is compared with indirect immunofluorescence (IFI) in 44 cases of active hydatidosis established at operation (30 cysts of the liver, 9 cysts of the lung and 5 extra-hepatic and extra-pulmonary cysts). The sensitivities of the IP and IFI tests were 88.6% and 63.6%, respectively. The IP test is easy, specific and very sensitive.
In the present study, were compared several media in use in diagnostic laboratory for the isolation of enteric pathogens. The AA. have remarked the efficiency of Bacto-Selenite F and of Bacto-TT Broth Base Hajna, for the enrichment; it is suggested the use of Bacto Agar and of Bacto-Hektoen Enteric Agar for the isolation.

The AA. report the results of the bacteriological researches carried during the years 1975-1977 on 8226 cultures. They remark the high percentage of positivity registered for Salmonella, with superiority of S. wien (87.74%), and the onset of serotypes of group E1. At the conclusion of their study point out the nature endemic taken by the salmonellosis in Messina, and suggest the practice of prophylaxis for the control of the epidemiology.
The AA. mede a research of Salmonellae in the sea water of the city of Messina (Italy), choosing 14 points near the sewage discharges. They used qualitative methods (Moore type buffers, inoculation of 50 ml of water in tetrationate 2 times concentrated) and quantitative methods (fractions of 100 ml of water in 10 parts and further inoculation in 10 tubes containing 20 ml of normal tetrationate each). The research conducted in June-July and November-December 1978 gave 50% positivity in the summer period and 100% in the winter period. They discuss the methods used and underline the difference of the two periods.
The radioallergosorbent test (RAST) for specific IgE antibodies to Echinococcus granulosus was compared with other immunological methods in regard to sensitivity, specificity and its use as a diagnostic aid for hydatid disease. Sera used were from patients with active hydatidosis proved surgically, from persons operated for hydatidosis during the previous 2-10 years and from patients with other parasitic diseases or healthy subjects. Results with enzyme-immuno assay (ELISA), indirect haemagglutination (IHA), counter-immunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) and skin test were compared with those with RAST. The percentage of positive RAST reactions (81.2%) among the patients with active hydatidosis was slightly lower than the percentage of positive ELISA (90.6%), IHA (90.6%) and skin test (87.5%) and was superior to CIEP (75%). Among the patients with previous hydatidosis, the RAST was negative in 90% of case, whereas other serological tests were positive in a considerable proportion of cases (ELISA test, 80%; IHA test, 40%; CIEP test, 40%; skin test, 60%). A high percentage (50%) of false positive RAST reactions have been observed in sera from patients infested with other parasites. Results indicated that the RAST for IgE antibodies not be used as the only method for diagnosis of hydatidosis, but it may be employed, if serological data obtained before surgery are available for comparison, for evaluate the results of surgery and to clarify the prognosis.

The Authors examined the bacteriological analysis carried our during a period of five years (June 1971-June 1976), and pointed out the percentage of positivity and sensibility to antibiotics of the bacteria isolated. On a total of 8,263 analysis, 4,327 coprocultures and 2,076 urinocultures have been made, thus occupying the first places in frequency. 195 patogenous enterobacteria have been isolated from coprocultures, corresponding to a positivity of 4.50%. As for the urinocultures positivity reached 43.25%; the germs most frequently isolated were Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis. The Authors isolated in the same period 17 strains of Myc. tuberculosis from 115 samples of expectoration (14.7%) and 27 strains from 216 samples of urine (12.5%). By recommending antibiograms, the Authors suggest that the most effective antibiotics against enterobacteria responsable of infections of the urinary and gastrointestinal tract are nalidixic acid and furadantin, cloramfenicolo was ineffective against the isolated Salmonella strains. As for Gram-positive germs some results have been obtained with cefalotine, rifampicin, and cefazolin.

The Authors in accordance with the Government Ordinance of the October 11, 1978, made a microbiological control on 50 artisan made ice-creams produced in Messina town in March-April 1979. The 24% of the products analyzed presented one or more parameters not in conformity with the law; whereas 34.78% of the 23 locals controlled commercialised not completely hygienic ice-creams. Commenting the results obtained the Authors wish that the application of the law should have principally an educational and not punishing aim.
