Ultrastructural study of calcinosis universalis with dermatomyositis.

Calcinosis universalis associated with dermatomyositis occurred in a 58-year-old woman. Tissues removed from the sublingual region in the patient were studied by ordinary microscopy, electron microscopy, and an electron-microanalytic method. The calcified materials were distributed on collagen fibers and seemed to have a relationship with foci of fibrinoid degeneration. Moreover, globular and/or membranous structures, considered to originate from the degenerate cells of the stroma, were observed in these calcified zones. Some of them contained electron-dense materials. Therefore, the globular and/or membranous structures were thought to be concerned with initial calcification in this case. Furthermore, irregular bone tissue was formed adjacent to the calcified masses. In addition, the calcified materials were identified by X-ray diffraction examination and electron microscopy as hydroxyapatite.

Structural studies of the O-antigen of the lipopolysaccharide from an avirulent strain (M4S) of Pseudomonas solanacearum.

The structure of the O-antigen of the lipopolysaccharide from an avirulent strain (M4S) of Pseudomonas solanacearum has been investigated by methylation analysis, n.m.r. spectroscopy, and N-deacetylation-deamination, followed by analysis and controlled Smith-degradation of the product. These studies demonstrate that the O-antigen is composed of a tetrasaccharide repeating-unit having the following structure: ----3)-alpha-D-GlcpNAc-(1----2)-alpha-L-Rhap-(1----2)-alpha- L-Rhap-(1----3)- alpha-L-Rhap-(1----.

Electron microscopy of cells displaced into the dentinal tubules due to dry cavity preparation.

Using dogs' teeth, cells displaced into the dentinal tubules due to dry cavity preparation were observed using electron microscopy. In order to obtain adequate fixation a new local-perfusion method was employed. Most of the cells which moved into the dentinal tubules were odontoblast nuclei and partly neutrophilic leukocytes and erythrocytes. Not only odontoblast nuclei but also cytoplasmic organelles, such as mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum, free ribosomes, and lysosomes were displaced into the tubules. The weavings of dentinal fibers in the tubules were observed in some areas.

An experimental study of intraoral carcinogenesis in rats.

A new method has been devised for preparing artificial cecal pouches lined with mucous epithelium in the lower lips of Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rats in order to make carcinogens act continuously for a long time in the oral mucosa. When a 0.5 per cent mineral oil solution of DMBA, a crystal of MC, and a crystal of NG were administered, squamous-cell carcinoma, carcinoma in situ, papilloma, adenoma sebaceum. neurofibroma, fibroma, hemangiosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma, hemangioma, and lymphangioma were successfully produced in the oral mucosa of rats. In addition, interesting findings were obtained concerning tissue changes in the process of carcinogensis in the mucous epithelium.
