A computerized approach to the collection and analysis of cardiac action potentials.

A description is given of a microcomputer system for the collection and storage of cardiac action potentials. The equipment required is commercially available and easy to use. Analysis of the data is performed off-line with a mainframe computer. A description of the software used for both data collection and data analysis is given.

Woman allergic to husband's sweat and semen.

A woman complained of severe itching and flushing after sexual intercourse or other physical contact with her husband. She developed a weal and flare on intradermal testing with her husband's semen and sweat, pooled donor semen and the sweat from her 2 sons. This is a report of allergy to human semen and the 1st reported case of allergy to human sweat.

Urologic procedures.

The relief of bladder outlet obstruction can be accomplished by several procedures. In the absence of trauma, the simplest of these is passage of a Foley catheter. When the genitourinary system has been subjected to trauma, it is important to assess its integrity before instrumentation is performed. Radiographic assessment is performed most often with the use of contrast media.

The persistence of somatosensory and auditory pathway evoked potentials in severe hypoglycemia in the cat.

In a previous study it was shown that during severe insulin-induced hypoglycemia in rats and cats (0.38 mmol/l, i.e., 6.8 mg% and 0.8 mmol/l, i.e., 14 mg% respectively) with isoelectric EEG, the latency and amplitude of the auditory nerve-brain-stem evoked responses were not affected. In the present study on cats, the above evoked responses were complemented by recording in addition the cortical auditory evoked potential and the peripheral, brain-stem and cortical components of the somatosensory evoked potentials. Each of these evoked potentials remained in the presence of 0.75 mmol/l glucose in plasma. The persistence of the somatosensory cortical evoked potential was unexpected since two other groups have reported the disappearance of this potential during hypoglycemia. The types of neuronal activity which can still be recorded in severe hypoglycemia are probably generated by neuronal structures with lower metabolic demands such as axons and oligosynaptic pathways, surviving on the consumption of endogenous substrates with compensatory elevation of local cerebral blood flow.

Substituted 5H-dibenz[b,g]-1,4-oxazocines and related amino acids with antiinflammatory activity.

During an investigation of the antiinflammatory properties of a number of tetracyclic derivatives of 6,8-dichlorodibenz[b,f]oxepin-10(11H)-one, the ring-expanded 1,3-dichloro-5H-dibenz[b,g]-1,4-oxazocine (9) was prepared and found to be considerable pharmacological interest. It was subsequently found that the corresponding ring-opened amino acid 66, a close analogue of the antiinflammatory agent fenclofenac, also possessed significant antiinflammatory activity, superior both to the dibenzoxazocine and to fenclofenac. These findings prompted extensive synthetic programs in both areas, and a number of derivatives in the amino acid series showed potencies considerably in excess of the standard compound. These phenylacetic acids, however, were significantly more ulcerogenic than fenclofenac whereas the corresponding dibenzoxazocines showed few signs of ulcerogenicity at doses up to 1 g/kg.

The thermogenic role of adipose tissue in the dog.

Brown adipose tissue was clearly present in neonatal dogs. In the adult the tissue was superseded by a tissue with the gross characteristics of white adipose. However despite their appearance adult adipose tissue depots may contribute to non-shivering thermogenesis. Regional blood flow measurements using injected radioactive microspheres indicated large increases in blood flow to adipose depots during infusion of noradrenaline. Coupled with blood flow estimations, measurement of arteriovenous differences in dissolved oxygen across the bladder fat depot demonstrated a quantitative increase in oxygen extraction by the depot during noradrenaline infusion. Acute activation of non-shivering thermogenesis in the dog was not associated with increased mitochondrial GDP-binding in adipose tissue. However chronic treatment with a beta-stimulant (LY79730) which increased capacity for non-shivering thermogenesis was associated with increased mitochondrial GDP-binding and cytochrome oxidase activity in peri-renal adipose tissue.

Allergic contact dermatitis due to 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one in gum arabic.

Benzisothiazolin-3-one is a preservative widely used in industry. The manufacturer states that it is a known skin irritant and sensitiser, but these facts are not well-known. A case is described of contact allergy in a lithoprinter caused by it when used as a preservative in gum arabic. The literature is reviewed and a suitable patch-test concentration is suggested. It should be included in the patch-test battery for lithoprinters.

Post-natal development of interscapular (brown) adipose tissue in the guinea pig: effect of environmental temperature.

The post-natal development of interscapular brown adipose tissue (BAT) was studied in the guinea pig by monitoring changes in DNA, triglycerides and mitochondrial protein as well as the activity of cytochrome oxidase and atractyloside insensitive GDP-binding. The results demonstrate that neonatal brown fat develops into a tissue with the gross characteristics of white adipose tissue. In this respect the post-natal development of guinea pig BAT is analogous to that of the tissue in man. Furthermore the apparent transformation is not irreversible since cold exposure (+4 degrees C) of adult guinea pigs for six weeks resulted in restoration of cytochrome oxidase, GDP-binding, etc, to levels characteristic of neonatal BAT. However, the interscapular fat pad temperature response to noradrenaline and the presence of 32 000 mol. wt mitochondrial inner membrane protein indicate that the tissue retains thermogenic activity even in warm acclimated adult guinea pigs.
