Evaluation of a latex agglutination test for detection of antibodies to rubella virus in selected sera.

A new latex agglutination test for rubella virus was used to test sera with a hemagglutination inhibition titer of less than or equal to 8 (97 specimens) or greater than or equal to 256 (158 specimens). Maximum latex agglutination test sensitivity was achieved when low-titer sera were tested undiluted and high-titer sera were diluted (1:10). A modification of the protocol of the manufacturer resulted in a latex agglutination-hemagglutination inhibition agreement of 96.7%.

Liquid chromatography at 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethylene glycol in urine with fluorescence detection.

We describe a liquid-chromatographic procedure for determining low concentrations of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethylene glycol in urine. After liquid-liquid extraction and cleanup of the sample, an aliquot of the extract is injected onto a reversed-phase chromatographic column, with isocratic elution with an acetonitrile/acetate buffer mobile phase. An on-line fluorescence detector is used for measuring the natural fluorescence of the compound. The method gives a relatively clean extract, which is suitable for measuring the less-than-normal concentrations associated with mentally depressed patients. Although a liquid-chromatographic technique has been recently described for measuring this compound in urine, the method involves electrochemical detection, which may not be available in many clinical laboratories, and, because of its nonspecificity, the method is only suitable for detecting the increased amounts of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethylene glycol excreted by patients with pheochromocytoma.

Surgical lengthening of the mandible: a laboratory model.

Mandibular lengthening in mongrel dogs was evaluated in four animals. Extraoral approaches were used for mandibular exposure. Step osteotomies were performed on the buccal aspect and oblique osteotomies were performed on the lingual aspect of the mandible. The anterior fragment of the mandible was advanced 10 mm. A Dacron-urethane mesh tray, in the form of the mandible, was placed across the defect as a container of bone graft material and to help stabilize the segments. The bone graft material was harvested by aspirating the bone particles formed when the osteotomy cuts were made, thus creating a bone slurry which was placed within the implant. The results suggest that the use of the implant tray in conjunction with the bony slurry provided an appropriate physiologic setting for rapid new bone formation, restoring continuity to the defect.

Social acceptability as a function of labels and assigned attributes.

A variety of biasing factors have been shown to influence individuals' ratings of each other. This study was designed to investigate the effects of categorical labels and assigned attributes on the social-acceptability ratings of fourth-grade children. An analysis of the results suggested that the assignment of positive attributes helped to maintain favorable ratings of a child in spite of unfavorable behavior. Implications of the results were discussed.

Preliminary histologic evaluation of a biocompatible mesh for tracheal reconstruction.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a porous Dacron - urethane mesh tracheal prosthesis in large dogs with surgically created discontinuous defects of the cervical trachea. Some protheses were carbon coated in an attempt to improve biocompatibility. Histology was performed on 2 dogs. The mucosa regenerated entirely covering the prosthesis. Respiratory epithelium was formed over a large central portion of the tracheas.

A spectral study of human ceruloplasmin.

The absorption, luminescence and CD spectra of human ceruloplasmin were studied. The absorption spectrum in the infrared, and the CD spectrum in the ultraviolet, both indicate the presence of beta conformation in the native structure of the protein. From the magnitude of the measured ellipticity, it is estimated that 0.46 of the amino acid residues are in the beta conformation, the remaining 0.54 being in unordered form. A comparison of the fluorescence and phosphorescence properties of native and apoceruloplasmin shows that the presence of copper causes the quenching of tryptophanyl luminescence, probably through energy transfer to the copper chromophores. By the combined resolution of the absorption and CD spectra, it was concluded that the copper chromophores are involved in six electronic transitions in the region 300--900 nm. Our results provide evidence for an interaction between the copper chromophores responsible for the 330 nm absorption in ceruloplasmin.

Neurocranial reconstruction using an elastomer-coated cloth mesh and bone grafting.

The purpose of this report is to present out 5-year experience in reconstructing large bony defects in the cranial vault of 16 patients. The method employs an alloplastic implant device made of elastomer-coated cloth mesh, used in conjunction with bone grafting [D. L. Leake and M. Habal, J. Biomed. Mater. Res., 10, 555 (1976)]. The cranial defects ranged in size from 6 X 6 cm to 15 X 17 cm. The defects were in the frontal, temporoparietal, and occipital regions. Particularly challenging was the frontal-orbital region involving the superciliary ridges. The alloplastic implant provides controlled contour of the bone graft material while providing strength and stability during healing. The implant has adequate but not complete ridigity, allowing adaptability inthe operating room. The elastomer used is a polyetherurethane. Any biocompatible cloth mesh can be used, but Dacron [poly(ethylene terephthalate)] was chosen because of its extensive implant history. Contrasted with reconstruction using only bone, where as many as half of the cases had uneveness and were found to be anesthetically unsatisfactory, the technique described here has resulted in aesthetically excellent results and an intact neurocranium in the 16 patients studied thus far.
