The effects of cooling conditions on the apparent bond strength of a dental porcelain fused to a case substructure were studied. Under the conditions of this investigation slow cooling of the porcelain-metal composite in an oven or rapid cooling in an ice chest from the maturation temperature of the porcelain resulted in the highest values of apparent bond strength. However, additional factors must be considered in the selection of a particular cooling method. From the present data it appears that the most practical procedure for cooling a ceramometal restoration is under a protective cover since it provides the least risk to the integrity of the porcelain-alloy bond and the surface of the porcelain.

Properties, heat treatment response, structure, and composition of three high-fusing crown and fixed partial denture alloys were studied. Except for elongation, the properties of two gold-palladium-silver based materials were compared to those of a gold-palladium alloy. The greater elongation of the latter material was attributed to its intragranular homogeneity.
The flow behavior of five elastomeric impression materials was determined by extrusion viscometry. Initial viscosity ranged from 400 to 5,100 poise at a shear rate of 2.2 reciprocal seconds. All of the elastomers showed initial non-Newtonian behavior and increased viscosity with time.

Some mechanical properties, physical characteristics, and manipulative features of three resin-based die materials were assessed. Advantages afforded by the strength and hardness of the test materials were overshadowed by relatively long setting times, incompatability with certain impression materials, and polymerization shrinkage. All dies aged beyond 24 hours were found to be unsuitable for use in precision fixed phosthodontic procedures.
Stress relaxation of four temporary restoratives was studied. In the vicinity of ambient mouth temperature, the relaxation characteristics of an unmodified zinc oxide-eugenol cement were more favorable than those of IRM and Cavit. The plastic behavior of gutta-percha temporary stopping precluded assessment of its relaxation at temperatures in excess of 22 degrees C.
A capillary extrusion rheometer was developed and tested using Newtonian oils of known viscosity and seven endodontic sealers. The described apparatus and technique appear appropriate for comparative assessment of the rheological characteristics of a variety of fluid dental materials.
