Treatment of multiple sclerosis with anti-measles cow colostrum.

Previous virological and immunological studies have suggested that multiple sclerosis (MS) is an auto-immune disease triggered by a virus infection. In order to inhibit the growth of measles virus in the patient's jejunum, we obtained an IgA-rich cow colostrum containing anti-measles lactoglobulin resistant to proteases. This colostrum was orally administered to patients with MS to investigate its effect on the course of the disease. Measles-positive antibody colostrum was orally administered every morning to 15 patients with MS at a daily dosage of 100 ml for 30 days. Similarly, measles-negative antibody (less than 8) control colostrum was orally administered to 5 patients. As a clinical assessment, disability scores developed by the International Federation of Multiple Sclerosis Societies were used. As a result, of 7 high NT titre (512-5120) anti-measles colostrum recipients 5 patients improved and 2 remained unchanged. Among 8 low NT titre (8-32) anti-measles colostrum recipients 5 patients improved and 3 remained unchanged. However, of 5 negative NT titre (less than 8) colostrum recipients 2 patients remained unchanged and 3 worsened. No side-effects were observed in colostrum recipients. These findings suggest the efficacy of orally administered anti-measles colostrum in improving the condition of MS patients (P less than 0.05).

The determination of blood histamine in asthmatic patients with a simple and sensitive method.

The histamine level of whole blood and plasma in asthmatic patients was estimated by means of a simple, sensitive and specific method, which was developed to measure low histamine levels. This method consists of the following procedures; the partial purification of histamine with a small P-cellulose column; its further purification with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); and fluorometric detection with precolumn o-phthaldehyde (OPT) reaction. The present assay could detect as little as 0.5 ng of histamine concentration. Blood histamine levels in patient with asthmatic attack, 57 +/- 34 ng/ml (mean +/- S.D. N = 14), were significantly different from those in symptom-free period, 37 +/- 15 ng/ml (N = 15) as well as those in normal subjects, 36 +/- 17 ng/ml (N = 12). However, there were no significant differences among plasma histamine levels in normal subjects, 1.6 +/- 1.7 ng/ml (N = 12) and, in asthmatic patients during attacks, 1.6 +/- 1.8 ng/ml (N = 14) and symptom-free periods, 1.6 +/- 1.7 ng/ml (N = 15). These results indicate that plasma histamine concentration does not increase during asthmatic attacks, even though there was significant increase of blood histamine concentration.

[Ferritin levels of ascites and the contents of cystic ovarian tumors--possibilities of ferritin production and secretion by malignant tumor cells].

In this paper, we presented an interesting case with a cystic ovarian tumor, which consisted of the mucinous cystadenoma and the mucinous cystadenocarcinoma separated by a partition. The determination of ferritin concentrations in the both displayed ferritin levels of 87.5 ng/ml in the former and 14,812.0 ng/ml in latter respectively. This fact suggested the production of ferritin by the malignant tumor cells. To clarify this possibility, measurement of ferritin levels in the content of cystic ovarian tumors in fifteen cases and in the ascites of various origin in sixty-five cases was done. This study also supported a possibility that malignant tumor cells produce and/or secrete much more ferritin into the body fluid than benign tumor cells.

Monoclonal antibodies against a paramyxovirus isolated from Japanese Sparrow-Hawks.

Five monoclonal antibodies against the haemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) molecule of Taka virus, a variant of Newcastle disease virus (NDV), were established to compare the antigenicities of several avian paramyxoviruses including NDV. From the results of the cross haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test with the monoclonal antibodies, the HN molecule of Taka virus seemed to have at least three different antigenic determinants; one was specific for all NDV strains tested, the second was for Taka virus and Komarov strain of NDV and the third was for Taka virus, Komarov strain, Bangor and Yucaipa. Furthermore, the differences in the ratio of HI to neuraminidase-inhibition titers suggested that the separate active sites involved in haemagglutinin and neuraminidase activities might exist at least in close proximity.

Inhibitory effects of histamine antagonists on the skin reaction with house dust allergen, histamine and compound 48/80 in Japanese monkeys.

Using the skin of monkeys, we studied the participation of histamine receptors in the immediate skin reaction. Intradermal injection of H2 agonist produced whealing reaction to a significant degree, although this effect was not so remarkable as the effect of H1 agonist. A non-thiourea H2 antagonist showed a significant inhibitory effect on the whealing reaction to allergen, compound 48/80, and histamine. These results suggest that H2 antagonist prevented the whealing reaction by changing the vascular reaction to secreted or exogenous histamine. However, the participation of histamine receptors on dermal mast cells in the immediate skin allergic reaction is still left inconclusive.

[Percutaneous transabdominal fine needle aspiration of regional lymph nodes in genitourinary cancer].

Percutaneous fine needle aspiration of retroperitoneal pelvic and abdominal lymph nodes was done in 21 patients with clinically localized bladder, prostate, or penile cancers. A diagnosis of metastases to regional lymph nodes was detected by this method in 6 patients, but only one case could be diagnosed by bipedal lymphography. Positive aspiration results may spare the patient with prostatic or bladder cancer an unnecessary radical operation. This method also enables the detection of micrometastasis of lymph node which can not be detected by lymphography. No complications were seen in this series.

Feulgen-deoxyribonucleic acid values in the cytology of bladder cancer.

The deoxyribonucleic acid values of cells separated from fixed specimens from patients with bladder cancer were determined with the use of a microspectrophotometer and were compared to the grade and stage of cancer tissues. A histogram of nuclear deoxyribonucleic acid values showed flatness of the mode, deviation of the stem line to the right and an increase of polyploid cells associated with an increase in the grade and stage of cancer. Prognosis seems to be related more closely to deoxyribonucleic acid values off cancer tissues than to the stage and grade of cancer. Deoxyribonucleic acid values of exfoliated cells from fresh cancer tissue and the cells in the urine of the same patients were compared, revealing similar patterns. Indication of grade could be made in some cases by determining nuclear deoxyribonucleic acid values of exfoliated cells in urine. This result indicates that determination of nuclear deoxyribonucleic acid values is a valuable parameter for automated evaluation of urinary cytology.

[A survey of Brucella canis infection in dogs sheltered in Tohoku University School of Medicine (author's transl)].

A total number of 1549 dogs from Miyagi Prefecture and the north coast area of Fukushima Prfecture were surveyed during a year from December 1976 to November 1977 for Brucella canis (B. canis). 173 of 1549 dogs (11.2%) were sero-positive to B. canis, and B. canis was isolated from 55 of 148 dogs examined, giving more than 3.6% for total 1549 dogs. The positivity were higher than that have been reported from other areas. The results of the morphological and biochemical studies for isolates were similar to the reference strain RM6/66, and they were identified as B. canis. No significant difference in sero-positive rate was found between male and female, but isolation rate was higher in female than in male. B. canis was isolated most frequently from the uterus and the spleen of both sexes. The importance of urine and milk as a source of infection was discussed as well as the role of infected focus at non gravid uterus for abortion and fetal infection. A case supposed to be a vertical infection was described also.
