We investigated the possible existence of mucin in lymphatic vessels in cholesteatoma perimatrix using the periodic acid-thiocarbohydrazide-silver proteinate (PA-TCH-SP) method. Histochemical staining distinguished two types of lymphatic vessels, one of which contained PA-TCH-SP reacting substance showing a loose mesh-like appearance. Connective tissue was edematous around this vessel and was infiltrated by abundant round cells. The second type of lymphatic vessel did not contain PA-TCH-SP reacting substance and few round cells were seen infiltrating tissue around this vessel. Gland-like structures of mucous epithelium in the perimatrix were heavily stained by the PA-TCH-SP method. Secretory granules of the mucous epithelium and its luminal content had a loose mesh-like appearance. Since contents of the gland-like structures may leak through the chinks of epithelial cells into subepidermal connective tissues, the resultant inflow of mucin into the lymphatic vessels may then cause inflammation of the cholesteatoma perimatrix.
By the reaction of 2-benzoylmethylimidazoles (1a, b) with polarized olefins (2, 3) in the presence of K2CO3, the corresponding imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives (4, 5) were obtained. Methylsulfinylimidazopyridine derivative (7) obtained by the reaction of 5b with m-chloroperbenzoic acid (m-CPBA), easily underwent nucleophilic substitution to give the corresponding substituted compounds (8a--e). The substitution of chloroimidazopyridine derivative (11) with nucleophiles produced the corresponding substituted compounds (12a--d).
By the reaction of 2-benzoylmethyl-4-methylthiazole (6) with polarized olefins (3, 4) in the presence of base (K2CO3 or NaH), the corresponding thiazolo[3,2-a]pyridine derivatives (7, 8) were obtained. Methylsulfinylthiazolopyridine derivative (11) obtained by the reaction of 8b with m-chloroperbenzoic acid (MCPBA), easily underwent nucleophilic substitution to give the corresponding substituted compounds (10, 12).
We report the use of ELT utilizing an Nd:YAG laser in a group of patients with cancer who represented a significant surgical risk. Effective palliation was achieved, with minimal morbidity, and the quality of life of most of our patients was preserved or enhanced, at a minimal physiologic cost. In carefully selected patients, ELT has proved to be a safe and highly effective procedure for the management of gastrointestinal cancers. It should be considered a valuable addition to the treatment armamentarium of the practicing clinician dealing with patients with advanced cancers or patients with significant medical conditions precluding surgical resection.
A survey enrolling 814 schoolchildren was conducted immediately after a peak epidemic in the 1988-1989 influenza season and then a case-control study for influenza-like illness (ILI) was carried out using information concerning illness onset and usual lifestyle. Based on the analysis of the correlations among symptoms and actions taken due to symptoms, cases were defined as those with fever greater than or equal to 38 degrees C and subsequent absenteeism and medical consultation during peak epidemic; within this, mild-ILI (MILI) was defined as fever greater than or equal to 38 degrees C and less than 39 degrees C, and severe-ILI (SILI) as fever greater than or equal to 39 degrees C. Controls were defined as those with no symptoms (NS) during that period. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) were obtained through an unconditional logistic regression model between the MILI (80) or SILI (48) and NS (196) groups from among respondents (803). For MILI, increased risks were observed for easily-inflamed tonsils (OR = 3.0, 95% CI: 1.7-5.4); and larger family size (1.9, 1.1-3.4); with decreased risks for higher school grades (0.4, 0.2-0.9); frequent intake of vegetables or fruits other than green/yellow vegetables (0.5, 0.3-1.0); and larger room space per capita (0.4, 0.2-0.9). For SILI, there were increased risks for easily-inflamed tonsils (3.8, 1.8-8.1) and history of doctor-diagnosed asthma (2.9, 1.2-6.7); and decreased risks for higher grades (0.2, 0.1-0.6), frequent intake of milk or dairy products (0.3, 0.1-0.6) and vaccination (0.3, 0.1-0.8).

The relation among biological properties, particularly pathogenicity for suckling mice, and plaque size was studied in four virus strains: Getah virus strain Kanagawa; two strains obtained by plaque cloning of the Kanagawa strain, Getah Kanagawa SP (G-K-SP) strain which forms small plaques (SP) only and strain G-K-LP which forms large plaques (LP) only; and strain Haruna which forms SP only. There were no marked differences among the four strains in serological properties, growth curves and sensitivity to pH, trypsin and temperature. Strain G-K-LP showed higher pathogenicity for suckling mice than strain G-K-SP. However, the pathogenicity of strain Haruna, which forms SP only, was as high as that of strain G-K-LP. Some of the clones in SP of strain Kanagawa kill all mice in 5 to 6 days after inoculation while the others required 9 to 11 days or longer before causing death. The present study showed that the pathogenicity of Getah viruses shortly after being isolated from the field, such as the Kanagawa strain, is different between large and small plaques, and even among small plaques, at least in suckling mice, and that the pathogenicity has no relation to plaque size.

Mice inoculated intracerebrally with parent, large-plaque (LP) and small-plaque (SP) strains of Kanagawa strain of Getah virus showed clinically recumbency and paralysis. The LP strain caused recumbency more rapidly and killed mice more early after inoculation than the parent and SP strains. Microscopically, skeletal muscles of the whole body were involved showing degenerative or inflammatory changes. In mice inoculated with the parent or SP strains, there were degeneration and necrosis of the muscle fibers with inflammatory cell infiltration and regenerative reaction. The lesions were particularly conspicuous in muscles of the hind legs. In mice inoculated with the LP strain, most of the muscle fibers revealed degeneration and necrosis, but reactive changes were poor. In addition, the periosteum and muscular connective tissue were thickened with karyorrhexis. Electron microscopically, virus particles were recognized mainly in cisternae of sarcoplasmic reticulum in skeletal muscle fibers of mice inoculated with the LP strain, while they were rare in those of animals injected with the parent and SP strains. From these finding, it was suggested that Kanagawa strain of Getah virus has the virulence to skeletal muscles of mice.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for detection of antibody against porcine parvovirus in swine sera. The antigen used for the assay was partially-purified virus treated with fluorocarbon and shown to contain 7 proteins by sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Of these proteins 83-, 64- and 60-K proteins reacted in Western immunoblotting with swine serum after infection with porcine parvovirus. Antibody responses were demonstrated by ELISA in pigs subcutaneously-infected with porcine parvovirus as by hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test and Western immunoblotting reaction with the 83-, 64- and 60-K viral proteins. The results of ELISA on random swine-serum samples were well-correlated with those of the HI test. These findings indicate the usefulness of the ELISA as a serological tool for porcine parvovirus infection.

Predictive clinical value of scintigraphical classification of the femoral head in intracapsular fracture of the femoral neck, as classified by Hirano, et al. in 1987, was investigated by long-term follow-up (mean; 4 years and 7 months). Normal healing was achieved in 21 of 24 patients. In those cases, early 99mTc-MDP scintigraphy revealed an over-all increase of radionuclide uptake (Type A) and band-like decrease along the fracture (Type B1). Late segmental collapse of the femoral head was found in 3 patients who showed either a decrease in the weight-bearing area (Type B2) or over-all decrease of radionuclide uptake (Type C). The results of fracture healing were well correlated to each type of scintigraphical classification. The changes of radionuclide uptake in the fracture site were also followed by serial 99mTc-MDP scintigraphy.
Mouse myeloma cells (SP2/O) were fused with spleen cells from BALB/c mice immunized with detergent-solubilized antigen of purified virus, and 21 monoclonal (MC) antibodies reactive in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with the TO-163 strain of porcine transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE) virus were obtained. Of these MC antibodies, 14, 6 and 1 were IgG1, IgG2a and IgM, respectively. All of the MC antibodies contained light chains of the kappa type. Of these MC antibodies, 8 were found to have neutralization (NT) activity against the TO-163 strain. Comparison of 7 strains of TGE virus by NT tests using our panel of MC antibodies confirmed their close antigenic relationships, but also revealed the occurrence of distinct antigenic differences. These results suggest that there may be at least 6 different epitopes involved in NT reaction on the virion of the TO-163 strain. This notion was confirmed by the competitive binding assay.
