XY gonadal dysgenesis in a heifer.

The anatomical and histological features of the genital tract of a six-year-old Haryana heifer, which had failed to show oestrus, are described. The heifer had a 60 XY karyotype in the leucocyte culture. The external genital organs were absent and a small opening at the ventral perineal border acted as the external urogenital opening. The ovaries were completely hypoplastic and a uterus didelphys opened into a single cervix. No male sex organs or their rudiment were observed.

Effect of garlic feeding on regression of experimental atherosclerosis in rabbits.

Thirty six rabbits were fed a cholesterol-containing diet for 3 months to produce atherosclerosis. Twelve rabbits were killed at the end of this period for baseline observations (Group I). The remaining animals were divided into two groups; Group II was fed stock diet and Group II was fed essential oil of garlic added to the stock diet. All the animals were killed at the end of 12 months. Blood lipids and fibrinolysis were monitored during the progression and regression phases. After cholesterol feeding was discontinued, serum total cholesterol and triglyceride concentration decreased gradually in both the groups. However, there was an increase in HDL levels in the garlic fed groups. Cholesterol feeding resulted in 80.9% atheromatous involvement of aortic surface in Group I. This remained almost the same (71.1%) after 9 months of stock feeding (Group II) while in the garlic fed group only 30.4% of the aortic surface had lesions. Correspondingly, the aortic lipid content of garlic fed animals was reduced by 72%, while in the control group there was no significant reduction. The data suggests that cholesterol is depleted from experimentally induces atherosclerosis by garlic administration.

A study of maximum oxygen uptake and heart rate during work and recovery as measured on cycle ergometer on national Indian sportsmen.

We have studied 73, top level Indian sportsmen for VO2 max and heart rates during work and recovery. High negative values of 'r' between VO2 max and heart rate during work and recovery have been observed. Absolute VO2 max, VO2 max/kg body wt/min and VO2 max/kg lean body mass/min are found to play an important role in influencing recovery of heart rate, more so in the initial phases. A similar trend has been observed while studying the influences of work heart rate on the recovery of heart rate after a standard exercise. Regression equations for the prediction of VO2 max from recovery pulse scores, have been worked out for Indian sportsmen.

Multiple-scored tablets. Weight and content uniformity of subdivisions and distribution of active constituent within and between tablets.

Using three brands of multiple-scored levodopa tablets, B.P. (500 mg) and one brand of sulphamethoxypyridazine tablets B.P. (500 mg) the weight and content uniformity of the subdivisions has been examined. It is shown that quartering of such tablets can result in subunits which do not conform to recognized standards of weight uniformity, and in some instances content uniformity may be questionable. The homogeneity of distribution of active constituent between tablets has been determined and compared with that within tablets (between quarters of individual tablets). Statistical evaluation of the results is presented.

Socio-cultural and clinical determinants of symptomatology in obsessional neurosis.

Eighty-two obsessional neurotics were studied from a phenomenological viewpoint in order to unmask the clinical and socio-cultural determinants of symptom-choice in this disorder. The form of obsessions and compulsions seemed to be affected primarily by intrinsic factors (age, sex, I.Q.) while their content was affected equally, if not more, by extrinsic factors (religion, locality, social class). Patient's age at the onset of illness seemed to be an extremely relevant factor insofar as it affected both the form and the content of symptoms. Some socio-cultural explanations have been offered these findings. The data is important insofar as it provides a baseline for cross-cultural studies of the phenomenology of obsessional illness.

Some psychological correlates of long-term heavy cannabis users.

Fifty persons who had all been heavy cannabis users for a long time were given psychological tests measuring psychomotor, perceptual and other variables. Half of these persons were "Charas" smokers, half "Bhang" drinkers. The duration of cannabis use was 4--10 years, with an average daily dose of 150 mg tetrahydrocannabinol. A matched control group of twenty-five persons were given the same tests. Compared with this group, the cannabis users were found to react more slowly, to be poorer in concentration and time estimation, to have higher neuroticism and greater perceptuo-motor disturbance. The higher neuroticism and greater perceptuo-motor disturbance. The Charas smokers were the poorest performers and also showed poor memory, lowered psychomotor activity, and poor size estimation.

Effect of essential oil of onion and garlic on experimental atherosclerosis in rabbits.

The effects of the essential oils of onion (extracted from 2 g of raw onion per kg body weight) and garlic (extracted from 1 g of raw garlic per kg body weight) have been observed on experimental atherosclerosis produced by cholesterol feeding (0.5 g/kg) in rabbits. The rise in serum cholesterol and serum triglycerides was significantly reduced by both onion and garlic during the 4-month period of study. Cholesterol feeding significantly increased beta-(P less than 0.01) and pre-beta (P less than 0.001) lipoproteins while decreasing the alpha-fraction (P less than 0.001). Onion and garlic both prevented these changes. The beta/alpha ratio, which was initially 1.6 : 1, rose to 4.5 : 1 and 5.7 : 1 at the end of 2 months and 4 months of cholesterol feeding. However, this ratio did not increase significantly, both at the 2-month and 4-month period, when onion and garlic were added. Fibrinolytic activity significantly increased with onion (P less than 0.001) and garlic (P less than 0.001) while feeding only cholesterol actually decreased it (P less than 0.001). Onion and garlic reducec aortic atheroma by about half. It is suggested that the essential oils of onion and garlic protect against experimental atherosclerosis by preventing the fall in the alpha lipoprotein fraction and by enhancing fibrinolytic activity, as well as by lowering the serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
