[Epidemiology and symptoms of stenosing laryngotracheitis (pseudo-croup) in 1322 inpatients in Bochum in the last 17 years].

During the 17 years period from 1967 to 1983 a total number of 1322 children were hospitalized for infectious croup (stenosing laryngotracheitis) at the Children's Hospital in Bochum. The epidemiology of this disease, especially the yearly and seasonal incidence as well as clinical symptoms were analyzed. For this purpose at least 18 data were obtained from each patient and processed by computer using an especially elaborated FORTRAN IV program. The main incidence of infectious croup was in fall and winter, with a peak in September and October. The symptoms began usually at nighttime and boys were affected 2.5 times more frequently than girls. The risk of disease was highest in the second year of life and decreased sharply with the begin of school age. Sixteen per cent of the children had recurrent attacks of stenosing laryngotracheitis. The main therapeutic procedures were listed and discussed. Besides air humidification, sufficient application of liquids and steroids in serious cases, racemic epinephrine given by mask and positive pressure ventilation has been demonstrated to be very effective. While the viral etiology of this disease has been well established possibilities in which way meteorological and environmental factors might contribute to the manifestation of this disease are discussed. This problem can be solved only by prospective investigations. No statistically relevant increase in the number of cases of stenosing laryngotracheitis during recent years can be found in the presented results.

[Selected light microscopy and polarization optical studies of implant-bone interfaces].

Implant bone specimen of inert materials and of the material BVK Ap 40 mended histologically. The bone specimen were both decalcified and carried to the polish technique after plastics embedding. The experiments were carried out in miniature swines (type Mini-Lewe) and rabbits. Microscopical and polarisation optical investigations were carried out. A connective-tissue membrane was provable at the interface implant-bone in all cases with use of the biocompatible material titanium. With BVK Ap 40 was observed a direct compound with the bone.

[Soft tissue reaction following bioactive and bio-inactive implantation materials in subcutaneous tissue of rats].

The investigation of bioactive materials in the subcutaneous tissue of the rat is a method of the biocompatibility testing of newly developed bio-vitrokerame. The histological assessment of the course of wound healing was the base of the evaluation after a period of 40 days. An extensively concluded cellular reaction and the formation of a thin fibrous capsule can be judged positively with aluminium oxide ceramics and beta tricalcium phosphate. Bioactive materials of a determined combination can arise problems.

Metabolizing activities of postmitochondrial liver fractions (S-9) on benzo[a]pyrene and dimethylnitrosamine.

The mutagenic activity of the carcinogens benz[a]pyrene and dimethylinitrosamine after being metabolised by postmitochondrial liver fractions (S-9) from rats, Syrian hamsters and rabbits was estimated in the Ames' test. The liver donors were pretreated with phenobarbital, 3-methylcholanthrene, PCB (Delor 106) or peanut oil. Parallel to the mutagenicity tests, enzymes of S-9 such as dimethylnitrosamine demethylase and aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase were estimated and their activity evaluated with reference to the results of the Ames' test.

A subtype of the prototypic karyotype in acute myeloid leukemia t (8; 21) (q22; q22), del 9 (q13; q23).

Two patients with acute myeloid leukemia are described in whom G- and C-banding analysis of bone marrow cells revealed, besides the translocation t(8;21), an additional structural anomaly characterized by the deletion of bands q13 to q23 of one chromosome no. 9. Findings in the literature support the proposal that this constellation represents a hitherto unreported subtype of the prototypic karyotype in AML.

[Comparative scanning electron microscopical investigation of the bond between bone and different alloplastic implant materials (author's transl)].

The traditional alloplastic implant materials and their applications are represented and are investigated in a comparative scanning electron microscopical study between bone and alloplastic. Provable are clear in "bio-vitroceramic Ap 40" compounds to the bone in the scanning electron microscopical photo-contrary to titanium, tantalum and teflon.

New translocations in chronic granulocytic leukaemia: t(X;22)(p22;q11) and t(15;22)(q26;q11).

Two cases of Ph1-positive chronic granulocytic leukaemia with hitherto undescribed translocations are presented. In case 1 the deleted part of chromosome number 22q- was translocated to the short arm of the X chromosome, t(X;22)(p22;q11). Pronounced basophilia, trisomy 19 in the majority of metaphases, and a partial cytogenetic normalization of the bone marrow during busulphan induced remission were additional remarkable features of this case. In case 2 a translocation t(15;22)(q26;q11) was found. In this case the disease was characterized by an increase of unusually small megakaryocytes, thrombocytosis, and an accelerated course.

[1st animal experimental results with Bio-Vitroceramic implantations].

In the framework of an expensive research project, the author made animal experiments to compare the bio-active behaviour of bio-vitroceramic implants with that of implants currently used. After experiments for more than a year, the author presents his first scanning electron microscopical findings that are indicative of direct binding of the implant to the bone.
