HLA antigens in patients with unexplained hepatitis following halothane anesthesia.

We examined HLA-A,B,C and DR locus antigens in 38 Japanese patients who had recovered from halothane hepatitis. The patients were divided into two subgroups, i.e. jaundice and non-jaundice groups, because the clinical features were quite different in each. DR2 was positive in 14 (58.3%) of 24 patients with jaundice, compared with 281 (33.6%) of the 837 Japanese healthy controls (chi-square with Yates' correction = 5.30, relative risk = 2.77, P less than 0.025). Conversely, Bw44 was increased in non-jaundice patients (50.0%), compared with 157 (12.7%) of the 1234 Japanese healthy controls (chi-square with Yates' correction = 13.75, relative risk = 6.86, P less than 0.001). The haplotype frequency (Hf) of Aw24-Bw52-DR2 was high in the patients with jaundice (Hf = 0.2362), while it was zero in the patients without jaundice (P less than 0.0042). These data suggest that the two groups of halothane hepatitis have different genetic backgrounds.

[Peri-focal administration of OK-432 combined with radiotherapy in the treatment of esophageal cancer].

We have been interested in direct activity of OK-432 on cancer lesion and applied a combined therapy of perifocal administration of OK-432 with radiation for 2 cases as a new trial. Following results were obtained. Histological efficacy as Ef3 at resected specimen was observed in one case and complete regression of cancer lesion was confirmed by X-ray, fiber scope and biopsy after combined therapy of perifocal administration of 10 KE of OK-432 with radiation of 2400 rad in total.

Suppressing effects of purified eosinophils derived from guinea pigs sensitized with Ascaris antigen on lymphocyte-blastformation.

Highly purified eosinophil (EOS) fractions were obtained from peritoneal exudate cells of guinea pigs immunized with with Ascaris lumbricoides suum antigen (Asc). These Eos suppressed the in vitro DNA synthesis of the lymph node cells (LNC) sensitized with Asc and then activated by this antigen or phytohemagglutinin (PHA). Although addition of Eos did not effect the viability of LNC in vitro, the blastformation of LNC was suppressed remarkably when 5-10 X 10(5) purified Eos were added to 10(6) LNC within 48 hr after the start of stimulation by Asc. The suppressive effects of Eos on the blastformation of LNC immunized with complete Freund's adjuvant with or without ovalbumin were observed when stimulated with purified protein derivates or ovalbumin. Such suppression were observed beyond the barrier of animal strain specificity; Eos from Hartley guinea pigs suppressed proliferation of LNC from either strain 13 or strain 2, and Eos from strain 13 suppressed that from strain 2. Such suppressing activity of Eos was reduced by heating them at 56 C for 1 hr or by sonication.
