[Smooth muscle cell apoptosis in aneurysmal aortic lesion in the light of surgical treatment results].

Aortic aneurysm is a polyethiologic disease associated with high disability and perioperative mortality rate. The evolution of ethiopathogenesis of aortic aneurysm development is considered in the article. The findings of recent worldwide studies on immune status impact on the disease progress and the postoperative period are presented. All studies showed that 25% of patients had immune status disturbances accompanied by changes in the hemostasis system and high apoptosis index in blood serum and aneurysm tissue. Variants of clinical course of different aortic aneurysm forms and perioperative managements of patients aimed at prevention of possible complications are highlighted.

Investigation of erythrocyte shape, plasma membrane fluidity and conformation of haemoglobin haemoporphyrin under the influence of long-term space flight.

The investigation of long-term space flight (SF) effect on the blood cells function is of great importance for modern space biology and medicine. We established that the number of discocytes decreased in the period of early rehabilitation after long-term SF. After SF plasma membrane fluidity and phospholipid content decreased and cholesterol content increased. After SF the amount of haemoglobin decreased and the parameters characterizing haemoglobin haemoporyphyrin (HH) conformation changed. We suppose that erythrocyte shape, membrane fluidity and HH conformation are among factors affecting oxygen transfer during and after space flight.

[Microvzor-2: a system for automated dry blood smear analysis].

Upgraded system Microvzor-2 for investigation of blood morphology in space flight is composed of soft- and hardware for dry smear image analysis. Ground-based testing showed that it could be utilized to investigate a broad spectrum of blood parameters in space flight, including erythrocytes, hemoglobin content in erythrocytes, volumetric erythrocyte distribution, diagnostics of anisocytosis, and poikilocytosis, leukocytes and leukocyte count. Analyzed are smears prepared from a fixed volume of finger blood. The process consists of smear scanning, input of the vision field images in the spacecraft computer and ensuing automated identification and counting. Information is stored in a dedicated database. Results of analysis are displayed as forms and cell galleries.

Relative Lewis basicities of six AI(ORF)4- superweak anions and the structures of LiA.

The relative Lewis basicities of six Al(ORF)4- ions, Al[OC(CH3)(CF3)2]4-, Al(OC(CF3)3]4-, Al(OCPh(CF3)2]4-, Al[OC[4-C6H4(tBu)](CF3)2]4-, Al(OC(Cy)(CF3)2]4-, and Al(OCPh2(CF3)]4-, have been determined by measuring their relative coordinating abilities towards Li+ in dichloromethane. The relative Li- Lewis basicities of the Al(ORF)4- ions are linearly related to the aqueous pKa values of the corresponding parent HORF fluoroalcohols. The Lewis basicity of Al[OCH(CF3)2]4- could not be measured because two of these anions can coordinate to one Li+ cation. The structures of LiAl[OCH(CF3)2]4 and [1-Et-3-Me-1,3-C3H3N2][Li[Al[OCH(CF3)2)4]2] were determined.

[Influence of space flight factors on peripheral red blood cells in humans].

Investigations of cosmonauts' peripheral red blood prior to and on days 1, 7 and 14 post long-term MIR-19 and -20 missions dealt with the morphological composition of blood, indices of iron exchange, correlation of erythrocyte shapes, and the lipid and phospholipid profiles of the erythrocyte membrane. To this avail, methods of light electron microscopy, radioimmune analysis, and thin-layer microscopy were used. Among the unidirectional shifts in the crewmembers of these missions were changes in ion exchange indices and the lipid and phospholipid profiles of erythrocyte membrane which were indicative of increased microviscosity of the lipid layer. Number of erythrocytes and hemoglobin content were reduced; transformed erythrocytes were present. It was also discovered that the fraction of normal erythrocytes (diskocytes) was partially replaced by spherocytes, cnisocytes in flight and typically by echinocytosis post flight. By and large, the observed shifts do not have any clinical implications and are most likely the blood system reaction to the stress of readaptation to the terrestrial conditions.

[Clinical and laboratory characteristics of patients with Sjogren's disease lasting from young age].

AIM: Characterization of Sjogren's disease (SD) with onset at early age basing on the comparison of two patient groups--with the disease onset at the age under 30 and over 50. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical, ophthalmological and stomatological examinations were performed in 31 SD patients who developed the disease at the age under 30 (group 1) and over 50 (group 2). RESULTS: In group 1 the disease started with parotitis in 42.8% of cases, dysfunction of secreting epithelial glands was rare, functional activity of exocrine glands was normal, dysproteinemia (high total protein levels, hypergammaglobulinemia, hypoalbuminemia) and immunological defects (high levels of circulating immune complexes, rheumatoid factor, antinuclear factor) were more pronounced. At retrospective analysis not only a decline of functional activity of the salivary and lacrimal glands but also appearance of systemic symptoms were registered. CONCLUSION: Development of systemic SD symptoms at young age necessitates early pathogenetic therapy employing corticosteroid, cytostatic and other drugs.

[Hematological investigations in conditions of long-term space flights].

In the nearly 15-month mission aboard MIR the cosmonaut-physician and members of three crews (MIR-15, -16, and -17) carried out a program of hematological investigations. Most of the changes related to the red blood system and included reduction in hemoglobin and hematocrit. Erythrocytes had decreased concentration and took on abnormal forms. There were also signs of altered metabolism of erythrocytes. Of interest are phase-by-phase variations in the levels of erythrocytes in the course of long-term stay in microgravity, and absence of a convincing correlation between hemoglobin, erythrocyte and hematocrit levels. But for lymphocytosis that returned to the norm already on the first day of recovery, no material changes occurred to the leukocyte profile. Investigations at the landing site displayed erythropenia, decreased reticulocytes and ensuing reticulocyte reaction, and gradual regain of the erythrocyte number that can be viewed as a normal physiological reaction of the blood system to the set of factors of spaceflight and early readaptation. Besides, the investigations showed a large individually of blood reactions to prolonged stay in space flight.

[Role of cryoglobulinemia in rheumatic diseases as illustrated by citizens of Moscow (resident population) and Tynda (migrants to Siberia)].

AIM: To determine occurrence of cryoglobulinemia (CGE) in residents of Moscow with various rheumatic diseases and healthy subjects, in Tynda population (migrants to Siberia) with rheumatic arthritis (RA) and healthy ones. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CG screening was performed according to the WHO recommendations among 243 rheumatic patients from Moscow, 500 healthy subjects living in Moscow, 72 RA patients from Siberia and 1750 healthy Siberia migrants. RESULTS: CGE occurred more frequently among Moscovites with SLE and RA (28 and 19%, respectively). In RA Siberians CGE was present in 52%. In healthy Siberians CGE occurred in 8.4% of the examinees, in Moscovites it was extremely rare. In all the examinees CGE was associated with cryoglobulinemia syndrome. SLE and RA Moscovites had mixed CGE with monoclonal components (type II), RA Siberial migrants had CGE type II and III (mixed polyclonal). CONCLUSION: The study of CGE incidence in healthy migrants to Siberia with different duration of residence, measurements of metal ions in RA Siberians with and without CGE in the serum, blood cells and cryoprecipitates provided the authors with information for a new hypothesis of CGE origin and design of new policy of treating CGE.

[Dynamics of the hematological shifts in females during antiorthostatic hypokinesia].

The purpose of the present study was to perform comprehensive hematological investigations of females in a 120-day head-down (-5 degrees) bed rest and in the period of recovery. Morphometric, cytochemical parameters of erythrocytes and lymphocytes, erythropoietic activity and turnover of iron were analyzed in 8 female subjects assigned into two groups of 4. In group A, countermeasures were applied throughout the experiment; in group B, they were used only in the recovery period. Shifts observed in a number of parameters of the turnover of iron and morphometry of the blood cells are most likely adaptive by nature and demonstrate the reaction of blood to the hypokinesia and recovery factors.

[The effect of head-down tilt bed rest on metabolism of erythrocytes and functional state of membranes in females].

Metabolism of erythrocytes and the structural/functional state of membranes were studied in females in the 120-day head-down bed rest and the subsequent period of recovery. As was stated, prolonged bed rest and early recovery cause shifts in the metabolic and structural parameters of erythrocytes and ensuing degradation of the functional state of erythrocytes, i.e. changes in deformability and echinocytosis. The system of countermeasures including exercise and a set of alimentary supplements with polysaturated fat acids and antioxidants, proved to moderate the changes although it failed to fully eliminate them.

[Metabolic and structural aspects of cellular homeostasis in long-term isolation].

Metabolism and structural/functional status of membrane of blood cells (erythrocytes, lymphocytes) were investigated in human subjects during simulation of MIR environment and operations, and postflight activities. Homeostasis of the blood count cells was assessed by the parameters of intercellular metabolism. Histochemical technique was used to evaluate the activity of mitochondrial enzymes succinate dehydrogenase and alpha-glycerphosphate dehydrogenase in lymphocytes. State of the erythrocyte membrane was judged about by the lipid and phospholipid spectra, activity of transport ATPase and shape of erythrocytes were determined with the electronscan microscopy. Adaptational shifts in erythrocyte metabolism were particularly marked on days 22 and 113 in the experiment, and day 1 of recovery. They appear to be associated with alterations on the membrane level. Therefore, simulation of a long-term MIR mission produces changes in cellular metabolism and status of cellular membranes concurrent to the readjustment of body controls due to, probably, shifts in the sympathoadrenal system. Destabilization of the cellular membrane could be also linked with plasmic factors, e.g. increases in bile acids, lysolecithin, Ca ions, etc., in consequence to changes in lipid metabolism and electrolyte status.

State of erythrocyte membrane in man and monkeys after space flight.

The lipid and phospholipid composition of the erythrocyte membrane was investigated in man after long space flight and monkey after short space. The result obtained confirm structural changes in EM under the influence of SF factors and show that an increase of Ch and ChE fractions and in the Ch&ChE/PL ratio combined with a decrease of PL fractions. It was noticed that the magnitude of these changes is depend on duration of space flight.

[Acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease: immunological studies].

A total of 216 patients with rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart from the Institute of Rheumatology and 126 patients with rheumatic heart diseases alone from the Center of Cardiosurgery were clinically and immunologically studied. The immunological study included the detection of b-hemolytic group A streptococcus, O-antistreptolysin, the measurement of C-reactive protein, immunoglobulins, C3, C4, Ciq-binding, anticardiolipin antibodies, etc. The findings indicated that the secondary penicillin prophylaxis prevents streptococcal pharyngitis and recurrence of acute rheumatic fever after 5 years. The high levels of Ciq-binding and anticardiolipin antibodies were directly proportional to the incidence rates of acute endocarditis and associated with the occurrence of venous and arterial thromboses.
