Influence of dietary energy on bird performance, carcase parts yields and nutrient composition of breast meat of heterozygous naked neck broilers reared at natural optimum and summer temperatures.
1. Heterozygous naked neck birds were raised under natural spring (average 21.2 degrees C) and summer temperatures (average 27.1 degrees C) to investigate the influence of dietary energy on broiler performance, carcase yield and nutrient composition of breast meat. 2. Birds were fed on a low energy diet of 12.12 MJ ME/kg, a medium energy diet of 12.96 MJ ME/kg and a high energy diet of 13.79 MJ ME/kg with 2 protein concentrations per energy treatment, 230 and 200 g/kg, from 0 to 3 and 3 to 7 weeks of age, respectively. 3. Summer rearing resulted in a decrease in body weight, body weight gain, carcase weight and carcase part yields of birds. 4. Increasing dietary energy from 12.12 to 13.79 MJ ME/kg increased body weight at 3 and 7 weeks, body weight gains from 0 to 3 and 3 to 7 weeks, carcase weights and relative abdominal fat weights of birds in a linear manner. There was no effect of dietary energy on the nutrient composition of breast meat. 5. It was concluded that there was no differences in dietary energy requirements of heterozygous naked neck birds when grown under natural optimum (21.2 degrees C) and summer temperatures (27.1 degrees C).
Diffuse cavernous hemangioma of the rectum and sigmoid colon.
We present an 18-year-old man with painless rectal bleeding, hematuria and diffuse cavernous hemangioma of the rectum and sigmoid colon. Thirty units of blood were transfused during the interval preceding definitive surgery. Low anterior resection and partial cystectomy were performed. During the postoperative period no rectal bleeding occurred, but he died of massive intracerebral bleeding 10 months after the operation.

Comparative evaluation of three commercial broiler stocks in hot versus temperate climates.
Hot climate is a major limiting factor of broiler production in tropical and subtropical regions. The use of standard stocks in hot climates may result in large economic losses because genotypes selected in temperate climates may respond differently to the high ambient temperatures in hot regions or seasons. The summer and fall in Izmir, Turkey, provided the natural hot and temperate climates, respectively, for this study. Broiler chicks were obtained from three commercial stocks, all bred in temperate climates. Male and female chicks, 60 per pen, were housed in four pens per stock per season. Individual BW was determined at hatch, and at 4 and 7 wk of age. Feed consumption and efficiency were determined per pen. Feathering was scored at 4, 5, and 6 wk of age. Body temperature was measured twice on three birds per sex per pen, 16 h and immediately before slaughter, and feather weight was determined for each of these birds. The two seasons clearly differed in ambient temperature at the broiler house, and consequently, BW at 7 wk was significantly lower in the summer than in the fall in all stocks, with an average reduction of 23%. The season effect was largest (33.5%) on BW gain from 4 to 7 wk, along with 23 and 15% reductions in feed consumption and efficiency, respectively, during these 3 wk. A significant season by stock interaction was detected for BW gain from 0 to 4 wk and 4 to 7 wk. The three stocks exhibited similar 4- to 7-wk BW gains under the temperate fall climatic conditions, but differed significantly in the summer. These differences were not related to normal differences in feather coverage or body temperature, suggesting that standard broiler stocks must be tested in hot climates in order to find the one most suited to these conditions.
Performance of naked neck and normal broilers in hot, warm, and temperate climates.
Chickens suffer at high ambient temperatures because their feather coverage hinders internal heat dissipation. Naked neck broilers (Na/na) and their normally feathered sibs (na/na) were evaluated in three natural climates. Three experiments were conducted in Turkey, during the summer in the extremely hot region of Adana (Ad-Sm), and in the moderate region of Izmir during the spring (Iz-Sp) and summer (Iz-Sm), always following the same experimental protocol. Ambient temperatures averaged 19, 28, and 32 C in Iz-Sp, Iz-Sm, and Ad-Sm, respectively. About 300 birds per genotype were included in each experiment. Feather weight was lower by about 20% in Na/na broilers than in na/na ones, independent of climate, sex, and age (6 or 7 wk). The Na/na broilers exhibited higher breast weight in all cases, from 2.5 to 10.9% higher than their na/na counterparts. Body weight gain from 4 to 7 wk (BWG4-7) clearly reflected the differences in ambient temperature among climates. The effect of the Na/na genotype on BWG4-7 interacted with climate and sex. In the hottest climate (Ad-Sm), both male and female Na/na broilers exhibited a highly significant advantage over their na/na counterparts. In the more moderate climate (Iz-Sm), the Na/na genotype exhibited superior growth only among males, and the magnitude of this advantage was lower than in Ad-Sm. In the cool temperate climate (Iz-Sp), BWG4-7 and BW7 (BW at 7 wk) means were similar for both genotypes. In Iz-Sp, feed efficiency (FE) of the Na/na birds was lower by about 4%, but in the two summer climates (Iz-Sm and Ad-Sm), FE of the Na/na birds was about 9% higher than that of their na/na counterparts. Body temperature was lower in the Na/na broilers than in their na/na counterparts; in all cases, the difference increasing with ambient temperature. The results indicate that the reduction in feather coverage provided relative heat tolerance, and therefore, under hot climates the Na/na broiler were superior to their normally feathered counterparts. It is concluded that naked neck broilers should be preferred in hot climates.
There is no relationship between concentration, motility and vacuolated cells.
To determine whether there are differences between concentration and motility in the vacuolated spermatozoa of fertile donors, randomized men and infertile patients, semen samples were compared. Based on the percentages of concentration and motility, samples were divided into three groups: Group I, fertile donors, concentration > 20 x 10(6)/ml, motility > 50%; Group II, patients, concentrations < 20 x 10(6)/ml, motility < 50%; Group III, randomized men, concentration > 20 x 10(6)/ml, motility > 50%. In each group samples were assessed morphologically by the strict criteria of Kruger et al. The results showed that there was no difference between Group I and Group II, but there were differences between Group III and Group II, and Group III and Group I. We conclude that there is no relationship between concentration, motility and vacuolated cells.
Effects of retainers on the articulation of speech.
Articulation abilities of 15 patients were evaluated at the end of orthodontic treatment with the initiation of removable upper and lower retainer wear. A test of articulation, based on consonants and vowels (cv), (vcv), (vc), (cvc) nonsense syllables, was used to evaluate the articulatory distortions with no retainers and with maxillary and mandibular retainers worn respectively and together. The test was performed (a) on the first day, (b) 24 hours later, and (c) 1 week later. Statistically significant articulatory distortions with the /t/ and /d/ sounds on the first day with upper retainer only and with both retainers worn together were noted. Also significant distortion of the /k/ sound with both retainers worn was observed. These distortions, due to the wearing of retainers, decreased to an insignificant level or disappeared completely on the seventh day showing the ability of tongue adaptation in a very short period of time.

Effect of dietary protein content on live and carcase performance of heterozygous naked neck and normally feathered broilers.
1. An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of different dietary protein contents on the performance of naked neck (Na/na) and normally feathered (na/na) broilers. 2. Chicks from the two genotypes were reared in wire-floored cages and divided at random into 3 groups. Birds were fed on high protein (HP, 12.99 MJ ME, 238 g crude protein/kg and 12.94 MJ ME, 216 g crude protein/kg from 0 to 3 and 3 to 7 weeks, respectively), medium protein (MP, 12.99 MJ ME, 219 g crude protein/kg and 12.87 MJ ME, 201 g crude protein/kg from 0 to 3 and 3 to 7 weeks), and low protein (LP, 12.94 MJ ME, 205 g crude protein/kg and 12.75 MJ ME, 184 g protein/kg from 0 to 3 and 3 to 7 weeks) diets. 3. The LP diets resulted in a significantly lower daily body weight gain of males from 0 to 3 weeks. Dietary protein content had no effect on body weight gain from 3 to 7 weeks, body weight at 7 weeks, and the food intake of birds. Carcase composition of birds from both genotypes was unaffected by dietary protein. 4. Naked neck birds had significantly higher body weights at 7 weeks. Yields of carcase and breast of Na/na males were significantly higher than those of na/na males. There were no significant differences between females from the two genotypes as regards carcase yield. 5. It was concluded that the dietary protein requirements of naked neck birds were similar to those for normally feathered birds.
The development of psychiatric medicine at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine and evaluation of 889 psychiatric referrals.
A clinical analysis of the psychiatric referrals (N = 889) during 1989-1991 is presented. The most prevalent psychiatric syndromes seen in both inpatients and outpatients are compared with reference to those areas of psychopathology that are less frequently identified by nonpsychiatrist physicians. The distribution of psychiatric referrals according to the various clinics in order of frequency was as follows: internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, and neurology. The most frequent reasons for consultation requests were (in order of frequency) the referring physician's difficulty in making a diagnosis; and patient anxiety, depression, adjustment problems, and past psychiatric illness in the history. Depressive illness was the most prevalent psychiatric disorder among both inpatient and outpatient referrals. However, the frequency of alcohol and substance abuse disorder in the inpatient population was only 3.17% and organic brain syndrome was the least frequently recognized psychiatric syndrome by the other clinicians. In this report, the clinical activities of the Liaison Psychiatry Unit of the Psychiatry Department in the Istanbul Medical Faculty are presented. The major problem areas and clinical training objectives of the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Unit are discussed.

Retroperitoneoscopic bilateral spermatic vein ligation.
An alternative method for bilateral spermatic vein ligation is presented. With a retroperitoneoscopic approach, the vascular structures are clearly identified, and damage to the intraperitoneal organs, spermatic arteries and lymphatics is minimized. We believe that the potential complications of transperitoneal laparoscopic techniques may be decreased with a retroperitoneoscopic approach.
Slime production by coagulase-negative staphylococci in the infected pulps.
In this study; slime factor which is produced by coagulase negative Staphylococci was investigated in infected pulps of 145 primary and permanent teeth. Staphylococci were isolated in 27% of the cultures and all of the isolated Staphylococci were coagulase negative (CNS) in permanent teeth whereas 75% of isolated Staphylococci were coagulase negative in primary teeth. Slime production rate was the same for both groups and 22% of CNS were found slime positive. It is thought that slime production is important not only in endodontic microbiology, but also in other fields of dentistry for the explanation of the pathogenesis of infection.
A comparison of body image, self-esteem and social support in total mastectomy and breast-conserving therapy in Turkish women.
As well as the medical outcomes of two distinct operations, namely total mastectomy and breast-conserving therapy, their impact on the psychic structuring of the patient may differ. A group of 40 woman with who had undergone mastectomy were therefore compared with another 40 with who had received breast-conserving therapy, with regard to the variables of body image, self-esteem and social support. The women who underwent breast-conserving therapy had a more positive body image (P < 0.001). The two groups showed a negligible difference with respect to self-esteem and social support (P > 0.05). A negative correlation was found between body image and social support (P < 0.05). Patients with total mastectomy therefore do have a more negative body image than patients receiving breast-conserving therapy. Self-esteem and social support in the postoperative period in two groups are comparable.
The visualization of granulomatous disease with somatostatin receptor scintigraphy.
In-111 labeled pentetreotide scintigraphy was applied to three patients with proven granulomatous disease (two with sarcoidosis, one with tuberculosis). All revealed accumulation of In-111 labeled pentetreotide in the granulomatous lesions, which was considered to be due to the presence of activated lymphocytes in these regions. This method may be of value in assessing the activity and extent of sarcoidosis and tuberculosis.
Calculi in a blind-ending limb of a duplicated ureter.
An unusual case with a blind-ending ureteral duplication containing stones is reported. A patient who had undergone two consequent unsuccessful operations attempted to extract a lower ureteral stone was later found to have the missing stone in the blind-ending branch of a duplicated ureter. The clinical significance of such malformation is discussed in light of the literature.
