Status of interagency cooperation between interdisciplinary clinics or hospitals and the public schools.

Since public schools are now mandated to provide a large and varied range of clinical services to handicapped school children, a survey was conducted of 26 interdisciplinary UAF clinics and hospitals in regard to the types of services which they offer to public school children and the extent in which coordination of such services has been developed. Results suggest that diagnosis of evaluation is the primary reason for referral but that a wide variety of community outreach services are both requested by the schools and offered by interdisciplinary hospital and clinic staff. These services are described and the implications for future interagency cooperation are discussed.

Diagnosing dyslexia. A note on the need for ecological assessment.

Diagnosis of dyslexia and other learning disabilities is usually made on the basis of poor academic performance; intact intelligence; presence of neurological, perceptual, or linguistic disorders; and exclusion of obvious physical, emotional, or environmental difficulties. Recent evidence suggests that both physicians and educators often fail to consider certain situational and instructional factors, which often leads to incorrect diagnosis of the syndrome. A simple case review and interview procedure is suggested as a means of avoiding the problem of false-positive diagnoses of dyslexia.

School follow-up of adolescents treated in a psychiatric hospital.

Parents of 25 patients discharged from an adolescent psychiatric ward over a one-year period were interviewed to determine their child's school adjustment. Satisfactory or excellent adjustment was reported in 84 percent of the cases. Findings were discussed in terms of the role of hospital school staff in assisting adolescents to make the transition to community school settings.

Identifying children with school learning and behavior problems served by interdisciplinary clinics and hospitals.

Questionnaires were sent to interdisciplinary UAF programs across the country to assess the types of handicapped school children who were receiving services at their facilities. A return rate of 65 percent was obtained and the total sample of children was 2088. Results indicated that a wide variety of ages and handicapping conditions were reported. Referral sources and services rendered were analyzed, and implications for cooperation with public school personnel were discussed.

Relationship between classroom behavior and achievement of mildly mentally retarded children.

Although the relationship between classroom behavior and academic achievement is well established for nonretarded children, the nature of this relationship is not clear for retarded children. Behavioral observations of 177 students in classrooms for educable mentally retarded children and for educationally handicapped children were compared to their achievement scores. Although significant correlations were found between some categories of behavior and achievement in arithmetic, the general absence of strong correlations was noteworthy when compared to previous findings on nonretarded subjects. Implications for academic instruction were suggested by the particular patterns of significant correlations.

What definitions of learning disability say and don't say: a critical analysis.

In this article, we analyze critically available definitions of learning disability (LD). The general problem of definition is discussed first followed by a discussion of individual LD definitions from the earliest to the latest. We conclude that LD definitions fail to provide substantive insight into the nature of the condition. The reasons for this failure are discussed in relation to the nature of definition and the difficulties in providing operational definitions of LD that are meaningful and significant. Finally, means for resolving the problem of definition are discussed.
