Suicidal carbon monoxide inhalation of exhaust fumes. Investigation of cases.

The inhalation of automobile exhaust gases is a relatively frequent suicidal method. Two such cases of special interest to forensic pathology and toxicology have been introduced. In case 1, a suicide note disclosed the victim's mental state, the inside conditions of the car, and toxic effects of automobile exhaust. In case 2, a reconstruction experiment has revealed important factors for the investigation of the scene, such as the size of a vinyl hose, the conditions of connecting site of the hose with the exhaust pipe, etc.

How to identify the Yakuza, Japanese racketeers--their sociology, criminology and physical characteristics.

International crimes such as smuggling and business fraud are increasing. It is possible that members of the Yakuza (Japanese racketeers or gangsters) may be involved in these criminal activities. The Yakuza is one of the best organized criminal groups in the world. It assumes a family-like form with fictitious kinship ties while making a living through organized crime. The sociological and criminological background of the Yakuza and their physical characteristics namely tattooing, digital amputation, and penile spheres are described and discussed so that the Yakuza can be identified even by foreign forensic pathologists.

The estimation of the time of death by non-protein nitrogen (NPN) in cadaveric materials. Report 3: multiple regression analysis of NPN values in human cadaveric materials.

The non-protein nitrogen (NPN) values in brain, lung, liver, and kidney in 79 autopsy cases were determined according to the Micro-Kjeldahl Nessler method. Multiple regression analysis of the data was performed with every possible combination of the time of death and the NPN values in the tissues. The brain NPN showed the best correlation with the postmortem time (r = 0.673), whereas the other correlations were less satisfactory (lung r = 0.422, liver r = 0.397, and kidney r = 0.379, respectively). However, multiple combinations of each tissue NPN value proved to give better correlation coefficients and smaller errors of the estimated time of death. The practical significance of the tissue NPN as a postmortem biochemical indicator of the time of death and the multiple regression analysis of such indicators were extensively discussed in this report.

Unusual personal identification with characteristic features in chest roentgenograms.

This case illustrates the unexpected aspects of radiographic personal identification. A skeletonized body without the neck and head, upper extremities, and feet was discovered on a seashore. No positive results were obtained from the remains concerning either the cause of death, the manner of death, or precise identification of the body. Roentgenologic examinations of the remains revealed a marked eminence of the manubrium sterni with characteristic crossing shadows. A successful partial superimposition of the ante- and postmortem lateral chest x-ray films helped to place the personal identification as that of a fisherman, 58 years old, missing in the sea for 21 days.

Self-mutilation. Plastic spherules in penile skin in yakuza, Japan's racketeers.

Despite the reduction in crime in Japan there is a problem with organized racketeer groups, or yakuza in Japanese. The members of the yakuza can be recognized by their speech and behavior and by their physical characteristics such as tattooing and digital amputations. Penile balls are unusual sexual devices that have been found on some yakuza. Nine cases of unusual way of identifying yakuza are reported. A survey of a detension house showed that 28 prisoners out of 130, or 21.5%, had penile balls. Penile balls and the yakuza are discussed in relation to forensic psychiatry.

Puffer poisoning in Japan--a case report.

A fatal case of puffer poisoning in an 80-year-old man is reported. By using a bioassay with mice and extracts of crude poisons, the toxicities of the autopsy materials, fresh puffer ovaries, and the remaining cooked ovaries were determined and expressed in mouse units per gram (M.U.). Some medicolegal aspects of puffer poisoning are also discussed. Puffer poisoning is a primary cause of fatal food poisoning in Japan even though its frequency is not high.

The determination of paraquat using thin-layer chromatography.

A thin-layer chromatographic method for the detection and determination of Paraquat in biological materials is presented. Paraquat was concentrated efficiently with the ion-exchange resin Dowex 50W-4 using a batch operation. Of the 16 solvent systems used the best results were obtained on silica gel G plates with methanol : 6N hydrochloric acid (20 : 30) or methanol : 6N sulfuric acid (20 : 30); and on cellulose plates with methanol : 6N hydrochloric acid (35 : 15) or methanol : 6N sulfuric acid (40 : 10). Also described is a microplate method for the thin-layer chromatography of Paraquat.
