[Effect of pancreatic islet cell culture allotransplantation on the clinical course of proliferative diabetic retinopathy].

The authors describe the effect of intramuscular human fetal pancreatic islet cell (IC) culture transplantation on the clinical course of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Four patients with the preterminal stage of PDR were followed-up no less than 2 yrs. after transplantation. A marked and stable improvement of the eye fundus clinical picture and visual acuity was observed in 3 of these 4 recipients. Correlation of the improvement of the ophthalmic status with the therapeutic effect of fetal IC culture allotransplantation on other diabetic complications like polyneuropathy and glomerulosclerosis was noted.

[Prevention of ineffective blocking of retinal ruptures in surgery of retinal detachment].

Investigations of 80 eyes have detected the potentiality of a 'secondary' shifting of the rupture of the retina during surgery for its detachment. The authors have developed a method for the assessment of the efficacy of blocking the retinal ruptures with due consideration for their possible 'secondary' shifting and a surgical technique making use of this method. The possible reasons of secondary shiftings of the retinal ruptures are discussed.

[Initial experience with laser retinal surgery].

The authors describe 21 cases with resection of the retinal rupture valve with Nd:YAG laser impulse, performed to reduce the vitreoretinal tractions. Resection of the 'dump' rupture valve has been carried out in 10 cases, in the rest 11 the operation has been performed in the presence of a detachment of the retina. Anatomic success (detachment of the valve from the retina) has been achieved in 16 cases. The technique of the surgery is described, as are indications and contraindications to the operation.
