Noncovalent functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes: application in hybrid nanostructures.

We developed a reproducible, noncovalent strategy to functionalize multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) via embedding nanotubes in polysiloxane shells. (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane molecules adsorbed to the nanotube surfaces via hydrophobic interactions are polymerized simply by acid catalysis and form a thin polysiloxane layer. On the basis of the embedded MWNTs, negatively charged gold nanoparticles are anchored to the nanotube surfaces via electrostatic interactions between the protonated amino groups and the gold nanoparticles. Furthermore, these gold nanoparticles can further grow and magnify along the nanotubes through heating in HAuCl4 aqueous solution at 100 degrees C; as a result these nanoparticles are joined to form continuous gold nanowires with MWNTs acting as templates.

Rapid self-assembly of oligo(o-phenylenediamine) into one-dimensional structures through a facile reprecipitation route.

The self-assembly of oligo(o-phenylenediamine) (OPD) into 1-D nanostructures on a macroscopic length scale was found when they were transferred from N-methyl pyrrolidone to deionized water. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and confocal fluorescence microscopy were used to investigate the morphology of the precipitates. Results showed that large amounts of OPD 1-D supertructures could be obtained through the simple reprecipitation route, and the length of the fibers could be tuned from microscale to macroscale by adjusting the ratio of two solvents. X-ray diffraction patterns and UV-vis spectra revealed that pi-pi interactions between OPD molecules that facilitated the formation of 1-D structures became predominant when they were transferred from a good solvent to a bad one. Accordingly, a possible formation mechanism was proposed.

Didodecyldimethylammonium bromide lipid bilayer-protected gold nanoparticles: synthesis, characterization, and self-assembly.

Didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) lipid bilayer-protected gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), which were stable and hydrophilic, were synthesized by in situ reduction of HAuCl(4) with NaBH(4) in an aqueous medium in the presence of DDAB. As-prepared nanoparticles were characterized by UV-vis spectra, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All these data supported the formation of AuNPs. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetric analysis data revealed that DDAB existed in a bilayer structure formed on the particle surface, resulting in a positively charged particle surface. The FTIR spectra also indicated that the DDAB bilayer coated on the surface of AuNPs was probably in the ordered gel phase with some end-gauche defects. On the basis of electrostatic interactions between such AuNPs and anionic polyelectrolyte poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS), we successfully fabricated (PSS/AuNP)(n)() multilayers on a cationic polyelectrolyte poly(ethylenimine) coated indium tin oxide substrate via the layer-by-layer self-assembly technique and characterized as-formed multilayers with UV-vis spectra and atomic force microscopy.

Conformational changes of beta-lactoglobulin induced by anionic phospholipid.

Conformational changes of beta-lactoglobulin (beta-LG) induced by anionic phospholipid (dimyristoylphosphatidylglycerol, DMPG) at physiological conditions (pH 7.0) have been investigated by UV-VIS, circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectra. The experimental results suggest that beta-LG-DMPG interactions cause beta-LG a structural reorganization of the secondary structure elements accompanied by an increase in alpha-helical content, and a loosening of the protein tertiary structure. The interaction forces between beta-LG and DMPG are further evaluated by fluorescence spectra. The fluorescence spectral data show that conformational changes in the protein are driven by electrostatic interaction at first, then by hydrophobic interaction between a protein with a negative net charge and a negatively charged phospholipid.

Surface enhanced Raman scattering of p-aminothiophenol self-assembled monolayers in sandwich structure fabricated on glass.

A sandwich structure consisting of Ag nanoparticles (NPs), p-aminothiophenol (p-ATP) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), and Ag NPs was fabricated on glass and characterized by surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The SERS spectrum of a p-ATP SAM in such sandwich structure shows that the electromagnetic enhancement is greater than that on Ag NPs assembled on glass. The obtained enhancement factors (EF) on solely one sandwich structure were as large as 6.0 +/- 0.62 x 10(4) and 1.2 +/- 0.62 x 10(7) for the 7a and 3b(b(2)) vibration modes, respectively. The large enhancement effect of p-ATP SAMs is likely a result of plasmon coupling between the two layers of Ag NP (localized surface plasmon) resonance, creating a large localized electromagnetic field at their interface, where p-ATP resides. Moreover, the fact that large EF values (approximately 1.9 +/- 0.7 x 10(4) and 9.4 +/- 0.7 x 10(6) for the 7a- and b(2)-type vibration modes, respectively) were also obtained on a single sandwich structure of Au NPsp-ATP SAMsAg NPs in the visible demonstrates that the electromagnetic coupling does not exist only between Ag NPs but also between Au and Ag NPs. The lower EF values on Au-to-Ag NPs compared to those on Ag-to-Ag NPs demonstrate that the Au-to-Ag coupling must be less effective than the Ag-to-Ag coupling for the induction of SERS in the visible.

In situ synthesis and characterization of multiwalled carbon nanotube/Au nanoparticle composite materials.

An effective and facile in situ reduction approach for the fabrication of carbon nanotube-supported Au nanoparticle (CNT/Au NP) composite nanomaterials is demonstrated in this article. Linear polyethyleneimine (PEI) is ingeniously used as both a functionalizing agent for the multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and a reducing agent for the formation of Au NPs. This method involves a simple mixing process followed by a mild heating process. This approach does not need the exhaustive surface oxidation process of CNTs. The coverage of Au NPs on CNTs is tunable by varying the experimental parameters, such as the initial molar ratio of PEI to HAuCl4, the relative concentration of PEI and HAuCl4 to MWNTs, and the temperature and duration of the heat treatment. More importantly, even the heterogeneous CNT/Au composite nanowires are obtainable through this method. TEM, XPS, and XRD are all used to characterize the CNT/Au composite materials. In addition, the optical and electrocatalytic properties are investigated.

Surface-enhanced resonance Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopy study of redox-induced conformational equilibrium of cytochrome c adsorbed on DNA-modified metal electrode.

The redox-induced conformational equilibrium of cytochrome c (cyt c) adsorbed on DNA-modified metal electrode and the interaction mechanism of DNA with cyt c have been studied by electrochemical, spectroscopic and spectroelectrochemical techniques. The results indicate that the external electric field induces potential-dependent coordination equilibrium of the adsorbed cyt c between its oxidized state (with native six-coordinate low-spin and non-native five-coordinate high-spin heme configuration) and its reduced state (with native six-coordinate low-spin heme configuration) on DNA-modified metal electrode. The strong interactions between DNA and cyt c induce the self-aggregation of cyt c adsorbed on DNA. The orientational distribution of cyt c adsorbed on DNA-modified metal electrode is potential-dependent, which results in the deviation from an ideal Nernstian behavior of the adsorbed cyt c at high electrode potentials. The electric-field-induced increase in the activation barrier of proton-transfer steps attributed to the rearrangement of the hydrogen bond network and the self-aggregation of cyt c upon adsorption on DNA-modified electrode strongly decrease the interfacial electron transfer rate. In addition, the strongly Coulombic interactions between DNA and cyt c only disturb the microenvironment of the heme, and do not affect the states of heme ligation and spin. The secondary structure of the adsorbed cyt c is retained, while the conformation of DNA is changed from the B form DNA to A form DNA.

Mercaptoethane sulfonate protected, water-soluble gold and silver nanoparticles: Syntheses, characterization and their building multilayer films with polyaniline via ion-dipole interactions.

Mercaptoethane sulfonate protected, water-soluble gold and silver nanoparticles (Au-MES and Ag-MES) are synthesized by one-phase method and characterized by TEM, TGA and XPS techniques, UV-vis and FTIR spectra. Both Au-MES and Ag-MES nanoparticles are soluble in the water up to 2.0 mg/ml and the stability of Au-MES is much better than that of Ag-MES. When dissolved in the water, they behave like a polyanion and can be used to build multilayer films with polyaniline (PANI) by way of layer-by-layer. A new approach is presented to fabricate the multilayer films of Au-MES/PANI and Ag-MES/PANI. The assembly mechanism of these multilayer films is also discussed. We anticipate highly conducting PANI films can be obtained by doping with these nanoparticles.

Syntheses of fully sulfonated polyaniline nano-networks and its application to the direct electrochemistry of cytochrome c.

Fully sulfonated polyaniline nano-particles, nano-fibrils and nano-networks have been achieved for the first time by electrochemical homopolymerization of orthanilic acid using a three-step electrochemical deposition procedure in a mixed solvent of acetonitrile (ACN) and water. The diameter of the uniform nano-particles is about 60 nm, and the nano-fibrils can be organized in two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) non-periodic networks with good electrical contact. Average distance between contacts is about 850 and 600nm for a 2D and 3D system, respectively. The details of the poly(orthanilic acid) (POA) nano-structure were examined with a field emission scanning electron microscope (SEM). The structure and properties of POA were characterized with FTIR, UV-vis and electrochemical methods. The 3D POA nano-networks coated platinum electrode gave a direct electrochemical behavior of horse heart cytochrome c (Cyt c) immobilized on this electrode surface, a pair of well-defined redox waves with formal potential (E( degrees ')) of -0.032 V (versus Ag/AgCl) was achieved. The interaction between Cyt c and POA makes the formal potential shift negatively compared to that of Cyt c in solution. Spectrophotometric and electrochemical methods were used to investigate the interaction of Cyt c with POA. The immobilized Cyt c in the nano-networks POA film maintained its activity, showing a surface-controlled electrode process with the electron transfer rate constant (k(s)) of 21s(-1) and a of 0.53, and could be used for the electrocatalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide. The quantitative determination of Cyt c by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) using the fully sulfonated 3D POA nano-networks film coated platinum electrode was also studied.

Sequential deprotonation of meso-(p-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrins in DMF: from hyperporphyrins to sodium porphyrin complexes.

Sequential deprotonations of meso-(p-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrins (p-OHTPPH2) in DMF + H2O (V/V = 1:1) mixture have been verified to result in the appearance of hyperporphyrin spectra. However, when the deprotonations of these p-OHTPPH2 are carried out in DMF, the spectral changes differ considerably from those in the mixture mentioned above. At low [OH-], the optical spectra in the visible region are still considered to have characteristics of hyperporphyrin spectra. Further deprotonation at much higher basicity makes the optical spectra form three-banded spectra similar to those in the acidic solution. To clarify the molecular origins of these changes, UV-vis, resonance Raman (RR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) experiments are carried out. Our data give evidence that p-OHTPPH2 in DMF can be further deprotonated of pyrrolic-H by higher concentrated NaOH, due to an aprotic medium like DMF effectively weakening the basicity of the porphyrin relative to that of the NaOH, and coordinates with two sodium ions (except the sodium ions that interact with the peripherial phenoxide anions) to form the sodium complexes of p-OHTPPH2 (Na2P, to lay a strong emphasis on the sodium ions that coordinate with the central nitrogen atom), which can be regarded as the porphyrin anions being perturbed by the sodium cations due to their highly ionic character. The negative centers generated by deprotonation of pyrrolic-H and phenolic-H are not thoroughly delocalized between the substituents and the porphyrin ring. Thus the negative centers generated by deprotonation of pyrrolic-H only act as electron-donating groups on the porphyrin pi system, and the negative charges of the phenoxide anion are also mainly localized on the peripheral substituents. As a result, the porphyrin pi orbitals cross over the phenoxide anion pi orbital and turn into HOMOs, which turns hyperporphyrin spectra of deprotonated phenolic-H of p-OHTPPH2 into three-banded spectra of regular metalloporphyrins.

Facile preparation of amperometric laccase biosensor with multifunction based on the matrix of carbon nanotubes-chitosan composite.

The carbon nanotubes-chitosan (CNTs-CS) composite provides a suitable biosensing matrix due to its good conductivity, high stability, and good biocompatibility. Enzymes can be firmly incorporated into the matrix without the aid of other cross-linking reagents. The composite is easy to form insoluble film in solution above pH 6.3. Based on this, a facilely fabricated amperometric biosensor by entrapping laccase into the CNTs-CS composite film has been developed. At pH 6.0, the fungi laccase incorporated into the composite film remains better catalytic activity than that dissolved in solution. The system is in favor of the accessibility of substrate to the active site of laccase, thus the affinity to substrates is improved greatly, such as 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS), catechol, and O2 with Km values of 19.86 microM, 9.43 microM, and 3.22 mM, respectively. The major advantages of the as-prepared biosensor are: detecting different substrates (ABTS, catechol, and O2), possessing high affinity and sensitivity, durable long-term stability, and facile preparation procedure. On the other hand, the system can be applied in fabrication of biofuel cells as the cathodic catalysts based on its good electrocatalysis for oxygen reduction. It can be extended to immobilize other enzymes and biomolecules, which will greatly facilitate the development of biosensors, biofuel cells, and other bioelectrochemical devices.

An approach for fabricating self-assembled monolayer of Ag nanoparticles on gold as the SERS-active substrate.

In this paper, an approach for fabricating an active surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate is adopted. This approach is based on the assembling of silver nanoparticles film on gold substrate. Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and p-aminothiophenol (p-ATP) were used as probe molecules for SERS experiments, showing that this new active substrate has sensitivity to SERS response. Tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) was also used to investigate the surface morphology following the fabricating process of the active SERS substrate, which showed that large quantities of silver nanoparticles were uniformly coated on the substrate.

Parallel alignment of carbon nanotubes induced with inorganic molecules.

In this work, a new strategy is presented to form ordered multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) arrays. The MWNTs are aligned horizontally and parallel in (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (3-APTES) sol films on the surface of mica and glassy carbon (GC). 3-APTES is ready to form charged rodlike micelles, which play a key role in fabricating orderly MWNT arrays. Moreover, we prepare MWNT arrays on the surfaces of solid electrodes and detect the electrochemical response of the microarray electrodes for the Fe(CN)(6)3-/Fe(CN)6(4-) couple.

Method for effective immobilization of Ru(bpy)(3)2+ on an electrode surface for solid-state electrochemiluminescene detection.

A novel method for effective immobilization of Ru(bpy)3(2+) on an electrode surface is developed. The whole process involves two steps: the electrostatic interactions between citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and Ru(bpy)3Cl2 in aqueous medium were used to fabricate Ru(bpy)(3)2+-AuNP aggregates (Ru-AuNPs) first, and then the Au-S interactions between as-formed Ru-AuNPs and sulfhydryl groups were used to effectively immobilize the Ru-AuNPs on a sulfhydryl-derivated indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode surface. As-prepared ITO electrode shows excellent stability, and the ECL active species Ru(bpy)3(2+) contained therein exhibit excellent ECL behaviors.

Biopolymer and carbon nanotubes interface prepared by self-assembly for studying the electrochemistry of microperoxidase-11.

Stable films of biopolymer chitosan and carbon nanotubes were prepared by a layer-by-layer self-assembly technique. Atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-vis spectroscopy were used to characterize the film assembly. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy showed that an even, stable film was formed. The UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry study indicated the uniform growth of the film. The property of the self-assembled multilayer film in promoting protein electron transfer was demonstrated by incorporating microperoxidase-11 in the film. Microperoxidase-11 in the multilayer film could transfer electrons with the electrode indicating that carbon nanotubes could wire the protein to the electrode. The electrocatalytic activity of the microperoxidase-11 containing multilayer film-modified electrode toward H(2)O(2) and O(2) was investigated. The results showed that along with the increase in the assembled layers the electrocatalytic reduction potentials of H(2)O(2) and O(2) shifted positively. The prepared multilayer film of chitosan and carbon nanotubes containing protein was a sensitive interface for electrocatalytic study.

Spectrometric and voltammetric investigation of interaction of neutral red with calf thymus DNA: pH effect.

The interaction of neutral red (NR) with calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) was investigated by spectrometric (UV-vis, circular dichroism and fluorescence) and voltammetric techniques. It was shown that the interaction of NR with DNA depended on the values of R (R is defined as the ratio of the concentration of NR to that of CT DNA) and pH of the solution. NR intercalated into CT DNA base pairs at lower R value (R < 2.4) and following by NR aggregating along the helical surface of DNA at higher R value (R > 2.4) in pH 6.0 solution. Interestingly, we found that at lower R value, NR intercalated into CT DNA with its long axis perpendicular or parallel to the dyad axis of DNA in the solution of pH 6.0. While in pH 7.0 solution, NR bound with CT DNA through intercalation and electrostatic interactions. The electrochemical inactive complexes, NR-2CT DNA, 3NR-CT DNA, and NR-CT DNA were formed when NR interacted with nucleic acids in pH 6.0 and 7.2 solutions, respectively. The corresponding intrinsic binding constants for these complexes were obtained by UV-vis and fluorescence spectrometric methods, respectively. The CD spectra showed that the conformation of CT DNA was converted from right-handed B-DNA to left-handed Z-DNA due to the aggregating of NR along the surface of DNA in pH 6.0 solution, whereas a conversion from B-DNA to C-DNA was induced due to the interaction of DNA with NR in pH 7.2 solution. Finally, two binding modes of NR with CT DNA in aqueous with different values of pH were shown in the scheme.

Rapid preparation and characterization of uniform, large, spherical Ag particles through a simple wet-chemical route.

In this article we report the rapid preparation of uniform, large, spherical Ag particles through a simple wet-chemical route. The formation of Ag particles with about 750 nm in diameter occurs in a single process, carried out by direct mix of AgNO3 aqueous solution and ortho-phenylenediamine N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone solution at room temperature, producing a relatively low-polydispersity product. It is also found that raising the temperature results in larger particles. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectra have been used to characterize the resulting product.
